To really get to know the full potential of each vehicle, you should go to a dealership and spend a little time test driving that car, and deciding for yourself. Or maybe you own more than one car, then you can make clear judgments. But saying "The S400 is a piece of crap" just because of its high price, pay attention to the build quality and why Mercedes has been one of the top car makers.

@d10230 The S400 only has a 3.5L V6, like the E350 - so it should be called the S350 hybrid. Why someone would buy an S-class in the US without a V8 is beyond me. It makes sense to have a hybrid for the city, but it won't be as good as the S550 on a long distance road trip. I'LL TAKE A DISEL OVER THIS HYBRID GARBAGE. When it comes to the S-class, go big or go home!

The closer they can get to reliable 100% electric power plant for a luxury car the better. The quite smooth driving nature of electric vehicles lends itself well the luxury market. The only thing I would worry about is the range and reliability limitations that still plague 100% electric power plants. Since Mercedes is known and revered worldwide for reliability I also wouldn't want them to rush it till it meats Mercedes Benz standards.

There's a 15Kw electric motor sandwiched between the engine and gearbox, similar to the way Honda does it. Under the bonnet the 12v battery is replaced with a Li-on one, that supplies 144v iirc, for the electric motor, plus 12v for the electrics through an inverter. It is termed a mild hybrid. When stopped at lights, the engine can be restarted by the 15Kw motor in a fraction of a second.

Current hybrid technology is heavy and takes away trunk or even interior space. The setup from Mercedes ensures that this doesn't happen. I find the S400 Hybrid to be a better thought out car as you can take it on long journeys with the family. The LS600h is not capable of that because of the small trunk and the extremely poor payload capacity. Once you have four adults on board you can't carry anymore luggage in the LS600h.

full hybrids has more powerful electric engine than mild ones. it gives to move with only electric motor capable up to 2km and average 50 km/h speed to car. no co2, no ANY noise, no fuel consumption. but i agree you. mercedes did a good job. avr.7.5 liter consuption is very good for its class. and i prefer mercedes to lexus in any case ;)

If Mercedes wanted to do a full-hybrid I would think they would mate it to their 3.0 V6 diesel or 4.0 V8 diesel engine. That way they could achieve both superb performance and even better fuel economy (especially with the 3.0 V6 diesel) than with the 3.5 V6 found in the S400 Hybrid. I did read that the 3.5 V6 in the S400 Hybrid has been "tuned for fuel economy" over the regular 3.5 V6.
