If water was not the cause of the fish's death... it was the other fish. Your tank was overcrowded with too many fish. This causes fish to be stressed out. My fish is changing color too right now... i'm thinking it is because of light though
Some goldfish do change colors. It's part of maturing. Black is a common color lost. I have a gold one that is turning white with a red head as I type this. I know this is normal because I have a older one from the same set that did the change last year. It is alive and well. Sometime change could be bad. But if water is good it shouldn't kill your fish. Something else was the cause.
They have testers at the pet store that can test the Ph, Amonia, and Nitrate levels. The testers come with a test tube. You fill the test tube to a certain line with the water from the aquarium. You add a certain number of drops from the tester and you'll see the water change color. You compare it with a chart they give you which tells you what the level is.
my marble/halfblack angelfish does that everyday it turns mustard colour on top, and the black turns grey when its bright outside. when it gets dark the top turns gold and the grey turns black
i have 2 comets they didnt die after changing colour they were first dark orange and then their tail was turning white then their upper fin turn completly white then after 5 days it started getting a hint of black on the very top of the fin
Young goldfish are dark in color as a natural camouflage. As they grow older they go through a color change and lighten up. This is what your fish did.
i think he had a disease called "ick" or Ich... its where they get white spots. he might have also gotton another deadly white foaming disease forgot what its called though...
This was not faked. Goldfish pigment can and do change over time. But the black in this situation was scaring from previous poor quality water. Usually from being kept in cramped tankes with too many other fish. The black(scar) was simply healing
use ELITE stingray 15 there not dear i bourght mine from a cash &carry for £8 in the shops their about £18.! i had the same problem, now my water is cristle clear! im not an add lol
The black coloring of her fins could be due to healing, much like people fish bruise as well, so... that might explain her coloring and why it went away?? Sorry to hear about her dying... hope your other fish are doing well. :)

Your fish doesn't changes color, its sick, it's a skin disease. And the other gold fish (which is actually golden colored) is sick too.
This occurs because bad water parameters, like very high ammonia.
And btw, most of freshwater fish do not change color without a reason.

what kind of tank/filter set up do you have? I have similar goldfish, and they keep clouding the water. really, it's a beautiful tank.
