This is too quick. A normal step pace is one step every 1/2 second, or 12 frames per step, making for a 24 frame cycle. On 2s, this would be 12 drawings for the cycle. A quick walk is 8 frames per step, or a 16 frame cycle. If you do this on one's making all 24 or 16 drawings for the cycle, the action will look smoother and more natural.
@RayPointer I could do that-- however the exercise was to do an 8 drawing walk cycle, so that's what I did. Also, a good question to ask is just what exactly is a "normal" step pace. Animation is all about bringing life to a drawing. Life, all of life, is unique, meaning everything you create has it's own style. But thanks for the comment.
@toddwheeler A "normal" pace is as I mentioned 12 frames per step. An 8 frame cycle is very fast. If this was your assignment, then the attitude of the character should have been more forward as if rushing. Your middle drawing displays confidence, not urgency. Was this for a class? I'm glad that you understand what animation is. You might want to check out my reel on YouTube.
@toddwheeler well I think personally if you do an 8 drawing walk, you should either keep the arms more constrained or have shorter steps, for the motion he's going through it would definitely be better on 12s
@toddwheeler "Normal" is an understood thing. The "question" is does it seem natural and believable. If someone is going to walk in 1/3 second steps, the attitude would be different as if having to race to the bathroom. In that case, the arm swing would not be as broad here.
would u do a tutorial, im insprired by ur drawing. but im lost on how to begin n how many differnt moves the mono makes. iv always have wanted to become a cartoonist. it seems lik a job wer i can enjoy my job n use my talent. lol i got way off topic, but ya, if u could hit me back in my comment that would be great
@Nickstervader People sometimes tend to over use this term, "snap" to refer to things that jerk when they should not. In this case, the arm swing seems too broad for the action for me.
@RayPointer Yes there is good arm sing action, but it is better suited for a slightly slower action. This is too fast for what the character is doing at the required frame/drawing rate.
nice, im doing this now in animation college :D

Thats great stuff. SImple but very effective. I love the arm swing, real fast & plenty of SNAP to it

Thanks...it's interesting to see how much you can get out of only 8 drawings.

how many frames?
yksnimus 3 years ago
Only 8 frames. Real simple.
toddwheeler 3 years ago
@toddwheeler you mean 8 drawings? cuz it would be 24 frames a second and each drawing would have a 3 frame hold. Right?
yazdgardian 1 year ago
@yazdgardian That would be true if I was trying to make a 1 second animation. But, the goal here was to make an 8 drawing animation.

thats really nice, I'm gonna study this example! thanks
