"Moe pleaded with Harry Cohn to allow Howard some time off upon discharge to regain his strength. Cohn would not halt the production of his profitable Stooge shorts and flatly refused Moe's request. Author Michael Fleming stated that "...it was a disastrous course of action."
dang!!! I didn;t even noticed that! wow. yeah, this was one of his las appearances soon after he got his first mild stroke. RIP . they were and will be the best in comedy
Curly started to look really really ill like this film. Most of his shorts in 1944, shows that Curly losing his trademark high pitched voice. Every time curly got hit by object, he did little to no scream at all. the director won't even let him have a break so curly can't have a chance to recover. Which sucks. R.I.P three stooges.
I thought Curly's performance in the pre-haunted house scenes were similar to his performances on Idiots Deluxe but when they arrive at the haunted house was where you really begin to notice Curly's health problems
The film made just before this one was Idiots Deluxe. That film showed that Curly was going downhill as he was losing his trademark high voice and his actions were slowing. This film shows a shadow of the old Curly. From this point forward he only got worse until his crippling stroke on the set of Half Wits Holiday. Check out the nice write up of Curly on Wikipedia for more details.
Much appreciate the info...it makes perfect sense and shows one how much his art is so dependent on the full measure of one's mental and physical skills, not an easy thing to imitate, a lot to learn and a lot of inborn talent all working in perfect synchronicity, the lack of which made manifest by even the smallest of pin strokes
Curly's failing health (physically and his voice) became sadly noticable around this time. Watch him a few years earlier and then from around this period, and it's night and day. It's sad.
I agree, this is the first film with Curly where it is obvious that he was not well. He suffered a first of many "mini" strokes which can slow a person down but not totally disable a person. The remainder of his films as seen in the recently released volume 5 are painful to watch as Curly no longer could do his famous high pitch squeal voice or his physical comedy. If you watch closely a stunt double is used in more demanding scenes. A sad end to a great comic.
I thought he was fine up to the time he had a stroke. I didn't know he worked while he was ill. He does appear to be different from the earlier shorts, almost doen't seem like the same person.
I never knew he was having health problems until later, I was shocked about the health problems he was having towards the end of his run with the Stooges.
I don't know how accrate it was but Mel Gibson made a TV movie about the stooges a few years ago (the ony stooge biography movie I know of) where he shows Curly having a stroke and Moe having to ask him to sign a release.
Was a pretty good movie, the end shows Moe and Larry best of friends each dying a few months apart.

I believe this is the first episode filmed right after Curly's first stroke. You can hear it in his speech. It's a little slurred and slower.

Here we get a good look at Joe Palma, who plays the maid. He is the "fake Shemp" in several of the shorts after Shemp died.

I am unsure why, but this episode is edited highly here. Parts missing. Is there a reason?
MegaMacTV 3 years ago
These are minisodes, 5-minute versions of full length tv shows. Yes, 'highly edited' to get them down to 5 minutes.

I think it was. You can tell. His voice isn''t as high-pitched as it once was and his timing is a bit slow!

You can still see some of the old Curly left in this short even though you can tell Curly was starting to sound ill during this time period.
