@Lientjiefly - Yeah indeed - even called it "rounders" during PE sessions. This is as South African as you get. In those days we did everything in PE, from cricket to gymnastics.
What happened to the popular VW vehicles from back then - Fox, Microbus, etc. In fact, what happened to Toyota Cressida, all Datsun cars, Opel Monza, Opel Kadett, etc?
Oh my word!!! When I saw this I went right to the store and bought me one of them baseball uniforms. Remember it just as if it was today. I gave it to my friend in Port Elizabeth when I got pregnant. It didnt fit no moe.
There were some queries as to why baseball, which was not popular in South Africa was used as the sport in this ad. Rugby and cricket were the most prevalent at that time in South Africa. I think it was a clever way around this by the art directors. This ad still brings a tear to the eye. Now we have John Lewis in the UK using almost the same concept. Proof that this concept is timeless - and brilliant. Great production, great art direction.
I remember the actor who played the 18 yr old son, he was also in a Standard Bank ad. As I recall he went to the States to seek his fortune and I've heard nothing about him again. Deffo a SA ad though - baseball probably in there so they could use it in other countries but stupid inclusion. I can say that either I or an immediate family member has owned all the models shown in this ad - good memories
could be in europe or in north america, it´s just a small movie of the everyday life of the whites. We know this culture, because we grew up in it, and that´s what makes it so recognizable....
Great commercial. Wish there were more of those out there. I had a BIG smile when I found this one on You tube. Does anyone remember the 5fm commercial with the Elton John Song - You gotta love someone? That was also one of the best SA commercials. Could someone please upload it if you have it.Thnx
i remember this commercial then i lived in SA, but do any of you remember the vicks vitamin c drops commmercail ( the young boy with his grandfather on the park bench) and also the bic commercial with the clown. if any has them can u upload them.
iotatube - you are either still very young or very stupid. This ad was made mid 80's, middle of the apartheid years. So, the baseball makes it look international. They weren't trying to South African, it IS an SA ad, with a hint of the outside world, as we were limited in exposure to that. I can only assume that you have jumped ship and relocated to the supposed better word. Shame. This is one of the best SA ads ever. Everyone (with a brain) over 25remembers is.
I agree, so it's a pretty stupid video all round, the video is obviously *trying* to be South African, one notices that in a few local details if you know them (are from there), but totally misses the local reality in the big picture.
I guess, the baseball-playing just "irritated" me most.
Lot of VW Beetles, Golfs and Kombis, that's SA in the 70'ies and 80'ies for sure though.
@1993gandy Mid 80s. The Red Golf 2 in the ad came out in 1983, so it would have been after that. The red Golf 2 in the ad has a J reg (which would probably put the year around 84)
@monk3yboy69 its a south african ad using south african reg plates things are done differently then but the mk 2 golf did come out in 1983 so you could be right about when the ad was made
@1993gandy With all due respect mate, there is no "could be right" about it! I am right, given I was around and living in SA when the ad was made!
Just so you know, a lot of us did play baseball in SA in the 80s. Television in the SA in the early days was very American as that was all we were exposed to (due to the Equity Ban from the UK). As baseball features heavily in most American sitcoms and dramas, the teens of the 80s were bound to try all things American, as we did!
@kmfw72 - I was thinking the same thing, even though I've never been there. I'm not bashing rsa, though. I'd love to visit. And I like the commercial, too.
@MrRedFredSaid It's well worth a visit. I wouldn't say that there were no hippies in SA in the 1960s, but it was extremely conservative - no TV until 1976. I suppose it was trying to be 'international' rather than South African - the only thing that I could identify as South African was the car number plate, but that would have escaped most non-South African people.
@kmfw72 - well the charming little house that the young couple moved into looked south african. It's just the sort of place I'd want if I lived there.
Yes, that is true with TV, came late. The house the young couple moved in is very South African. So is the driving on the other side and the car plate is definitely SA.
i was so young when this ad can out and i have searched for the song and finally found it and it was a great as i had remembered it. so glad to hear and see this advert again. its the perfect song in what must be my favourite advert of all time. thanks to whoever posted it! proudly south africanXXX
I've been looking for this commercial for ages!! Great memory of being a teenager in South Africa :) I'm so sappy it always made me tear up when the dad would hand over the keys :D
Man I've spent years in the back of a Jetta and Kombi...

I recall the BIC ad. The clown does a handstand on two bic pens and then signs an autograph. No idea where to find it though!
