Wes Farrell is singing on this demo and yes, he produced the Partridge Family recordings that featured David Cassidy. He coached David on his singing during the sessions.
I know this is just my opinion, but I really do feel this is the very best version ever done; and I wish it could be found, remastered and avaiable for purchase.
This would make a great bouns track if Decca ever re/released this album. This would never have been the hit it was had it been released with this version. This song has the best bridge and hook if any recording i have ever heard.Decca really knew how to mix a recording.not ther usual 4 track right and left channel most recording had in the 60's.
You can tell the difference when The Peppermint Rainbow got this song. They really enhanced the vocal and musical accompaniment. Really amazing song and a great piece of American Pop Music.

This is a demo obviously, however, even The Peppermint Rainbows version is a cover as well. I believe the first "produced" version was by the British band, Royalty.
The singer on the demo could be the late Wes Farrell, a songwriter/producer who moved to LA in 1970 to produce David Cassidy & the Partridge Family (hence the similarity in vocal styles between Wes & David).
I wouldn't be surprised at all if the singer on this demo IS David Cassidy, and man, what a monster hit this would've been for the "Partridge Family", considering all the viewership the show had in it's heyday.
Watching these 'groovy' videos has become my new addiction!!!!!! What memories they bring back...too bad they can't bring those days and innocence back. And of course, good tight skin! LOL

@MusicManKevin I Suspect That Wes Was Doing The Vocal But Al Couldn't Confirm. What Makes You So Sure Aye?

@Mangomn2003 I've heard other demos Wes cut while he worked in NYC as a songwriter/producer, prior to his relocation to the West Coast.

Your acetate is very nice.... acetates have a very short life span don't they? Very cool demo

I like the boogaloo groove the bass and drums are doing here... It didn't sound like this on the final hit...

the demo sounds like David Cassidy sort of-lower pitch, but the tone and phrasing sounds like DC-I

I don't think it's David Cassidy. Sounds kind of like him but this persons voice is a little deeper then David's.

The lyrics ar easier to understand on the demo than the PR hit....still I can appreciate the peppiness of the hit version..

Oddly, the lead singer on the demo has a sound very similar to early David Cassidy. I would have liked to hear him sing this song.

Cool-Some slightly different chord progressions from the PR version.
Wes went on to "Partridge stardom", right???

Yes, a year after this was a hit Wes went to the west coast and became the producer of the Partridge Family (David Cassidy)

wow the vocals are more soulful/black sounding than the hit version. very interesting comparison!

I like this demo, thanks for posting it. I've got the original 45 and album by the Peppermint Rainbow, I dig their "groovy threads" on the cover!
