What they are trying to do, is a stall recovery check. This is part of the test run and needs to be done. If they just stopped the engine after running it, they would have ruined the engine. You would need to have a ground guy run to the engine and check for gearbox alignment to engage the starter pawl. This didn't happen and the engine was still running. Might want to have a background in the test cell and know what you are talking about before you criticize these guys.
That doesn't look like an engine stall to me. It looks like the operator intentionally shut the engine down and didn't restart until after letting fuel blow into the tailpipe.
@nocalsteve no they pulled back from an already advance PLA and then advanced it rapidly, something is choking the airflow. this should not have happen if everything was rigged right. the fact that they were filming shows that they had done it before and wanted to do it again on film.... potently causing internal damage.
Hey Frank its D. This was my vid you commented on and didnt you use to just work MODS. To everyone else this was a compressor stall and we induced it for testing proposes. I just so happen to recording it for personal use. And yes Alaska has an extensive facility for tearing down and testing on the P&W-F100-220 engines for the F-15.
Elmendorf does engine maintenance? I would think a base in Alaska would just have servicable spares on hand and leave engine overhauls to the lower 48.
@y2kcobrar: What about Alaska makes you think they can't maintain their own engines?
JM: Isn't it all ...up north and.....cold? It just seems so remote. For instance today here in northern California, it was 66 degrees. We worked all day with the hangar doors open. All I'm saying is that I didn't realize that they had that extensive facilities up there. I've never been there.
So there we were, climbing out like a hog still looking for a bushel of corn at the end of the runway. Number 1 engine starts choo chooing. Actually I thought it was vibration from the huge radar dish on the BUFF....(since that mistake has happened before) but the pilot tapped me on the knee and pointed to the engine EPR gauge. It was bouncing wildly with the deepening compressor stall. But he just jockeyed the throttle until he got it to calm down. We flew a 15 hour mission after that.
We called compressor stalls, "choo choos." Because that's what it sounds like. Actually I think we got that from the pilots. I was in a B-52H once and it was flying it's FSAGA, first sortie after ground alert....it was fully loaded with fuel. And as you know FSAGA is a audit of the aircraft on alert....to see if they really can sit there for all those days and then fly at a moments notice. So there we were, climbing out like a hog still looking for a bushel of corn at the end of the runway.
Engine would not be going back into an aircraft until the problem was identified and fixed. That's half the reason for doing run like this. But I do agree with you, sounds like they knew it was having problems and induced one to get it on video.
The only thing I can see to tell if its a pratt or not from this view is the oil tank. The pratts are used in the F16 as well but not nearly as much as the F15. Its just seems to me like the GE129 is more responsive and reliable. We dont need to repair them nearly as much as the pratts. I need a life.
