This is an INCREDIBLE recording. Better than Polyphony's, I would say, and that one is amazing. It's just so much better when Eric Whitacre conducts it himself. Stunning - great job.
Polyphony has a good album, but it's not entirely for me. The music wasn't designed for a group that small, and I'm sure they had plenty of recording time to tweak everything into "perfection." I guess "to each his own." But "When David Heard" is, in fact, an unbelievably exquisite piece. :)
@kwbmusicman I agree that the music was not written for small groups, but listen to Cantus sing Lux TTBB. It's just nine guys, and it brings the harmonies out like CRAZY. Nowhere else have I heard such prominent overtones.
may these vows and this marriage be blessed may it be sweet milk like wine and halvah may this marriage offer fruit and shade like a date palm may this marriage be full of laughter our every day a day in paradise may this marriage be a sign of compassion a seal of happiness here and hereafter may this marriage have a fair face and a good name an omen as welcomes the moon in a clear blue sky i am out of words to describe how spirit mingles in this marriage
Another comment: it's great to see a composer who doesn't mind getting to grips with all manner of choral ensembles - regardless of 'amateur' or 'professional' status. If there is one thing Eric Whitacre isn't, it's a snob, and I find that very refreshing. None of the deadly elitism I've seen from so many artists... Perhaps his background helps.
Couldn't you put the Rumi poem in the side-bar, so that no one need be uncertain of any words? I was planning to post it in my comment, but no - YouTube informed me I was over the 'character count'... It often happens!
Just thought I would comment on this again. One of the most beautiful and together choirs on youtube. you guys are fantastic, keep doing what you're doing.
No. Not a little less vibrato. It sounds great with vibrato because its natural singing. And isn't that what we should want to achieve as singers. A natural from of expression using our natural voices.
a little less vibrato. but this is the best one on youtube. you have very good vowels. and good tone. and you blend. unlike every other choir on here. good job :]
It would actually not be inappropriate to have vibrato, since this piece does not have the crazy dissonant chords every measure. I think it adds more feeling to the piece. Nice job, Ole Miss.
wow.....just wow. amazing. my choir did this song last year and i think we were good also but just wow. what a beautiful song and you guys definitely sang it well
WOW! Your sound is beautiful! So many choirs butcher Whitacre but you perform it beautifully! Kudos to your director and hats off for obvious hard work and time spent to create a beautiful blend.
the concert singers are, and have always been amazing.. especially during doc's time. My choir teacher was in the concert singers from 95-00'. This is beautiful
the ole miss singers are world class..... gorgeous!

It's Whitacre directing... I'm pretty sure he'd notice the vibrato. And tell them to stop. IF HE DIDN'T WANT IT.
C'mon guys...

Why do people feel it appropriate to lodge criticism (even if "timbre" were correctly spelled) against musicians on youtube (of all places)?
This is a place where anyone can post anything they like. It certainly isn't a musical forum for listeners to pick at that with which we don't agree.
That said, great job, Ole Miss. Congratulations on your Whitacre collaboration.

try not to have too much vibrato.. it takes away from the context and tambre of the piece.
misssssssblue444 4 years ago
I'm sure they didn't post this so that people like you could act like you're important in this world, acting like you know anything.
they posted it for people like myself to enjoy.
and I did. Thank you.

Come on, Whitacre is actually directing them. If he wanted it out, he'd tell them. Sheesh.
