@lulagabriel What version?1 In Portugal the bonus tracks for The Silent Force were "Destroyed" and "Jane Doer". I just have the live version with the Black Symphony.
@PTphoenixUK It's a bonus for the Special Edition or Dual disc, that's all I know.. I just have the basic version, with no bonus track... I just have the Special Edition on my PC! =D
..... mind you that video would cost a fortune because Sharon would have to be relocated to Java to tell the story olf the 'Silent Force'. Mind you it would be an exscuse (does she need one?) for her to wear even more exotic costumes and look gorgeous ..... Who will put up the money though (come on - plenty of millionaires in in Holland)
Well - Ive searched in vain for a decent live performance of Swansong and Bittersweet and there just isn't one. I suppose because it takes a cast of thousands (and a bloody good orchestra) to pull it off.- and would cost a fortune. Also - not sure whether Sharon could sing it this well now. So this is pretty unique !! But a decent video to it - is a great idea.
@jezkn She can sing it this well, probably even better. After the last album I thought her voice was over as the songs are not ambitious at all from vocal point of view. But saw them life in Lisbon last month and she proved her voice is better than ever.
@PTphoenixUK That's great to hear and I would love to hear her perform this song (Swansong) live (but maybe Lisbon is a little far). However there is no decent version of her singing this live on YouTube or with this arrangement of the song. Probably vecause it would cost a fortune !! If you find a good 'live' version on YouTube send it to me!
@jezkn They had the Black symphony concert in 2008, and they performed the song on that concert, and they had a orchestra there. Unfortunatetly they decided to make an acustic performance of this one, using little of the orchestra. But "Forgiven", a ballad in the similar tune and equally beautiful and touching, was performed using the orchestra at full potential. Hopefully they will repeat the Black Symphony when they celebrate their 20th anniversary and they revisit the Swan Song again.
@PTphoenixUK Yes - I heard the Black Sympony concert -but the performance of SwanSong was not up to scratch as you say (and orchestral players nothing like quality of this recording) I will look forwards to a 20th anniversary performance. Please let me know - in case I miss it.
Incidentally there is a YouTube video of them rehearsing the recording of this song - including the divine 'fiddle' bits. Have you seen it?: Because thats the standard they've set for themselves! They've raised the bar!
@PTphoenixUK ... And even Epica have not reached the standard of orchestration achieved in this piece (and 'Bittersweet'). It is, as far as I know unique amongst (so called) Metal Bands and a great credit to Within Temptation. Please keep me informed of anything else you think I should listen to. Thanks!
@jezkn What do you think about The promise?! The live version with orchestra is superb. Think the intro specially is just perfect, sends goosebumps down my spine everytime I listen to it, never fails.
@PTphoenixUK Yes that Black Symphony version of the Promise is brilliant - especially with Sharon snaking about like a Black Mamba in it with so much energy (and the french horns) - and far superior to the album version of it ... And yet it's completely the other way round for Swan Song where the album version (Ithis version) is far superior. Isn't that strange? There's some lovely violin right at the end of 'Forgiven' too.
I really don't care if they themselves don't think they're gothic. That's really what I hear in their music. It's not metal. It's not rock. It is symphonic. I'll always call it gothic symphony. And I love it.
This song makes me cry. True beauty in music is so hard to find with all the shitty pop & rap. I pity my generation.... (I'm a teenager... My generation is doomed...)
@hanhula78 A trifle harsh - I feel you are being. They will come to appreciate this a little later maybe when they have 'grown up a bit'. You are one of the more 'discerning ones' - but this is timeless beauty - crossing generations and will never age, whereas other (trendy) stuff will fall by the wayside.
@hanhula78 Well - not 'doomed' anyway. I remember feeling like you did but I used listen to stuff and pretend to like it ('cause my mates liked it and it was 'trendy') but secretly I liked other (better) stuff - but daren't admit it! That came later. You have the courage to like the better stuff now !! Good on ya !
This is a video of the NEW BAND of the Rhapsody of fire's drummer Alex Holzwarth and BlindGuardian's bassist Oliver Holzwarth called PERGANA (female gothic metal)
I know what are you trying to say, this is a great feeling when listening to such a beatiful song like this, still there is no feeling in this world that can be equalised to the real heaven of god......
This song has NOTHING to do with Evanescence in any sense whatsoever - neither style, arrangement, vocals or lyrics. Mind you - in a way - it hasn't much to do with W.T. either! But that just makes it all the more remarkable. And if it makes you miss your 'Gothic' self so be it!.I haven't got one to miss! But that just tells you what an incredibly wide appeal this song has - way outside the Metal genre ...
i remember when i wanted to become a singer and sing this kind of music. I actually thought i could until someone told me my voice was horrible. I still dream that one day i could be as fantastic as within Temptation and create music that speaks to my heart and everyones that listens to it
@Talia13797 That's good to hear. Some people will always put you down. But others will be constructive. And it still sounds like you've got Self Belief - so go for it!
when i lisen to this song i got such a stange feeling, it's so hard to discribe it... it's bringing me in a safe and magical place but in the same time i have a stange felling of lonleyness ....
The song is actually a Swan Song for a lost & doomed empire - that of the Dutch colony of Java in Louis Couperus' 'De stille kracht' (1900 - translated as 'The Hidden Force') as well as the Swan Song of the tragic Van Oudijck family which it recounts ( a film of the book is in production - it should have this song in it but it won''t ...)
I love this song, not just the song itself but the feeling that it's able to invoke and captivate. It sounds as graceful as a swan, yet as cold as ice.
which fits well, since it about dying and the myth of the swan's last song).
Yeh - it's really got something this song... and it's a real pot boiler: grows and grows on you. Great, meaningfull lyrics too - full of hope and optimism - all about letting go and passing on - or over. It's actually not dark at all but full of light and wonder - which is maybe why a number of 'dark' metal addicts are uneasy with it! See - Metal doesn't have to be obsessed with dark themes !! I bet after reading this - even more people will hit the 'dislike' button ! Not me though.
I LOVE Within Temptation!!!!…. And to all you fans, you MUST check out THE other great band with a beautiful female singer, BELLADONNA!!!!…. Just watch their haunting video of "Let There Be Light " the song they did with legendary composer MICHAEL NYMAN based on his music of Oscar-winning movie "The Piano"... Nyman himself plays piano on it!!!… search for "nyman belladonna" here on youtube and you'll find it!!....:-)
The song reminds of my fadeness to society.... even though the the swan is singing his last song before he dies. I thought about being faded to the world.
@jezkn Well, I kinda fell in love with another kind of music so I rarely listen to WT these days. But when I pick it up again, I remember again how much Wt music speaks to my heart, and it makes me feel nostalgic
@littlemisshazel That's difficulty with labels. it's not Symphonic Metal either. Yes it's got orchestra and it's 'Epic' but if you played this to Joe Public he wouldn't recognise it as 'Metal' -just as a beautiful balad (with orchestral arrangement). However it is Metal to Metal fans 'cause that's how they see W.T. and it's Gothic to ex Goths 'cause that's how they see (saw?) W.T. It's all in the perceptgion. The fella below says it's overpoduced. What he means is he likes his Metal unpolished!
@o0LanternLight0o Shows the power of this song. Ex goths are actually considering returning to Gothdom. Hows about that for a song tribute !!! Couldn't get any better!
@o0LanternLight0o No - neither am I (however please tell me how I would know if I was one - do I have to think melancholy thoughts and wear a sort of uniform?).
But I like the idea of a song exerting such power that it makes people nostalgic for something they once were. And this number is apparantly one of those
@jezkn hmm, i belive goth(just in my oppinion anyway) is when you find beauty in things that others would find depressing, dark, or gloomy, witch somtimes i do, i just dont sport the style is all. and idk if nostalgic would be the right word but yeah i get what you mean
@o0LanternLight0o mmmm - Interesting - and yet here they're findng something dark and gloomy in something that is beautiful. Well - that definately decides I'm not one! I find this song amazingly optimistic (lyrics included) but I can see why they may read it a different way.
@jezkn well i dont mean in the since that a goth is one who thinks depressive things and finds them beautiful. i ment like say for exaple, one may say black clothing is dark and gloomy looking, but to a goth, it looks beautiful. im sure a goth doesnt look at suicide or depression in a positive way. i just ment to say agin, that there is certin things that a goth would find beatiful such as a sad song or a gloomy rainny day and like it, when another would find it depressing. am i more clear now?
@o0LanternLight0o And no - of course you don't have to be a Goth to appreciate this song or even a MetalHead (infact some of them are pretty dubious abouit it - hence the dislikes). But that's not the point. It seems to evoke this powerful emotion 'of loss' in a lot of 'ex' Goths and I find that quite moving even though I'm not one! (Perhaps I'm a Sentimentalist - oh yes definately one of those .....!)
@jezkn and im sure aswell that yes a goth would find this song optimistic. but dont you think if you were to show a prepy highschool girl this video, she would think "what kind of weird depressed people listen to this stuff, and what the heck are these people wearing?"
@o0LanternLight0o - Some useful insghts there. Here we are having a polite discussion about Gothdom and we don't even live there! They'll be coming after us soon! Goths remind me of a literary movement called English Sentimentalism (18th C) -who too 'derived pleasure out what others might find gloomy'. Samual Richardson is one ('Pamela'), Laurence Sterne ('Tristram Shandy') another. Henry McKenzie ('The Man of Feeling')'s hero, Harley dies of a broken heart (-not true of this song incidentally)
It's on the cd "silent force." I bought the ... I think it was the one with the bonus track because I liked that song "dangerous mind," I don't know if it was one of the original tracks or a bonus track, but I would say look for that one just in case.
this song needs to be longer

This song is so beautiful
It shows me how that i have a reason to live
That everyone have a reason to live
This song is made for people without a reason
They need to find out their reason

@SharinganErik Yeah - very perceptive. This song makes you want to embrace the world - and your precious relationships - not want to leave it!

@0nlydepp What happened to it?
jezkn 10 months ago
@jezkn Well, I kinda fell in love with another kind of music so I rarely listen to WT these days. But when I pick it up again, I remember again how much Wt music speaks to my heart, and it makes me feel nostalgic

@0nlydepp this song isnt very gothic to be honest,,well it might be if you are a fan of evenessence
AudioAstronaut5000 9 months ago
@AudioAstronaut5000
It's not gothic at all. It's symphonic metal.
littlemisshazel 9 months ago
@littlemisshazel That's difficulty with labels. it's not Symphonic Metal either. Yes it's got orchestra and it's 'Epic' but if you played this to Joe Public he wouldn't recognise it as 'Metal' -just as a beautiful balad (with orchestral arrangement). However it is Metal to Metal fans 'cause that's how they see W.T. and it's Gothic to ex Goths 'cause that's how they see (saw?) W.T. It's all in the perceptgion. The fella below says it's overpoduced. What he means is he likes his Metal unpolished!
jezkn 9 months ago
@littlemisshazel symphonic maybe , metal hell naw
AudioAstronaut5000 9 months ago
@AudioAstronaut5000 WT is a gothic metal/rock band including some symphonic... and a few Ballades like this one.

@o0LanternLight0o Shows the power of this song. Ex goths are actually considering returning to Gothdom. Hows about that for a song tribute !!! Couldn't get any better!
jezkn 8 months ago
@jezkn haha yeah i guess, i never was goth though, and im not now... too bad huh?
o0LanternLight0o 8 months ago
@o0LanternLight0o No - neither am I (however please tell me how I would know if I was one - do I have to think melancholy thoughts and wear a sort of uniform?).
But I like the idea of a song exerting such power that it makes people nostalgic for something they once were. And this number is apparantly one of those
jezkn 8 months ago
@jezkn hmm, i belive goth(just in my oppinion anyway) is when you find beauty in things that others would find depressing, dark, or gloomy, witch somtimes i do, i just dont sport the style is all. and idk if nostalgic would be the right word but yeah i get what you mean
o0LanternLight0o 8 months ago
@o0LanternLight0o mmmm - Interesting - and yet here they're findng something dark and gloomy in something that is beautiful. Well - that definately decides I'm not one! I find this song amazingly optimistic (lyrics included) but I can see why they may read it a different way.
jezkn 8 months ago
@jezkn well i dont mean in the since that a goth is one who thinks depressive things and finds them beautiful. i ment like say for exaple, one may say black clothing is dark and gloomy looking, but to a goth, it looks beautiful. im sure a goth doesnt look at suicide or depression in a positive way. i just ment to say agin, that there is certin things that a goth would find beatiful such as a sad song or a gloomy rainny day and like it, when another would find it depressing. am i more clear now?
o0LanternLight0o 8 months ago
@o0LanternLight0o And no - of course you don't have to be a Goth to appreciate this song or even a MetalHead (infact some of them are pretty dubious abouit it - hence the dislikes). But that's not the point. It seems to evoke this powerful emotion 'of loss' in a lot of 'ex' Goths and I find that quite moving even though I'm not one! (Perhaps I'm a Sentimentalist - oh yes definately one of those .....!)
jezkn 8 months ago
@jezkn and im sure aswell that yes a goth would find this song optimistic. but dont you think if you were to show a prepy highschool girl this video, she would think "what kind of weird depressed people listen to this stuff, and what the heck are these people wearing?"
o0LanternLight0o 8 months ago
@o0LanternLight0o - Some useful insghts there. Here we are having a polite discussion about Gothdom and we don't even live there! They'll be coming after us soon! Goths remind me of a literary movement called English Sentimentalism (18th C) -who too 'derived pleasure out what others might find gloomy'. Samual Richardson is one ('Pamela'), Laurence Sterne ('Tristram Shandy') another. Henry McKenzie ('The Man of Feeling')'s hero, Harley dies of a broken heart (-not true of this song incidentally)

@o0LanternLight0o ... love the idea of the 'Preppy School girl test'. That will be the 'gold standard' from now on !!

It's on the cd "silent force." I bought the ... I think it was the one with the bonus track because I liked that song "dangerous mind," I don't know if it was one of the original tracks or a bonus track, but I would say look for that one just in case.
