It sounds like Neil Young wrote this to copy the style of Guess Who, since Bachman was his guitar hero, and then they dutifully recorded it. Must be nice having people write in your style and all you have to do is record it.
Is this clip from the old CBC series that came on every day-- Music Hop? Man my friends and I were starved for rock music--we lived in a town with one radio station and one tv station. We'd watch every moment of those shows. This is how I found out about the Guess Who to begin with. I still am a huge fan.
@audieh1 sounds like the announcer says "lets go",and iirc there was a show back the by that name.....there was also a "teen dance party hosted by bob burns, but i don't recall if they had the guess who on,or live bands at all....all i recall is the "regulars" on the dance floor one of whom was jack skelly who did that surfin' bird thing....back then local dj's went to community club dances and stood on stage with the band shaking tambourines and introducing songs.....
the performance or the sound techs were terrible. i heard the announcer better than the band. plus it was sang too fast. they also seem uncomfortable. it's almost as if they dont want to sing this song well. they should have copied the Springfields arrangement
Wow nice. Canadian sharing with ex-Canadian Neil Young who wrote it and Richie Furray sand if for Buffalo Springfield. Springfield is better .. an sure better acoustics. BS was so talented and the SO are the Guess Who. Just listen to She's Come Undunulated (ha) and No Fricken Time for you.
Wow! I can't believe this footage exists! I'm fairly certain the GW have the distinction of being the first artist to cover Neil. Its a great song. Burton sounds great. Chad Allan had to bow out gracefully, but the stuff with him is also great. Thanks for posting, this was great to watch.
It must have been tough being a parent back then. I mean if you heard this song through your daughters bedroom wall you'd think, 'oh' that's a catchy little tune'. Then just a few years later you'd hear Helter Skelter or something. The harmonies in this song get me every time. Amazing!
hasn't anybody noticed that the host is none of then CHAD ALLEN....of Chad Allen and the Expressions...or...the original Guess Who singer?? (he was kinda the Pete best of the Guess Who) (he also missed the boat with BTO ...in the early 70's...he was in Brave Belt with Randy Bachman after Randy left the Guess Who.) 2-time loser! Merry Christmas all! Oh....quick trivia...who wrote and performed this song first? (Neil Young ... with the Buffalo Springfield!) (Stills sang)
This is faster than the recorded version..likely for the show's time frame. I prefer the Guess Who over the Buffalo Springfield recording. Cummings sounds just great and Bachman is terrific! Saw the two perform this summer together with backup band, The Carpet Frogs....What a fantastic night!!!! They rocked the joint big time! Its something else to see them together!!
Randy Bachman and Neil Young were good friends growing up in Canada. Randy was a few years older and Neil would come and watch his band play so makes sense The Guess Who would play a Neil Young composition.
This is great! A few years ago they appeared LIVE on " MARK & BRIAN" radio show ...either Mark or Brian was starting to worry that they were just a bunch of geezers because they were stumbling thru a sound check. When they were ready to start their set , The Guess Who torn the place up! They did their hits with ALL the same fire, artistry & passion they always performed with!
calm down cowboy neil yeah bufffalos sounds like a whole different arrangement. but these guys are true rock n rollers you could see that way back then...... hi burton hi randy
Song was written by cranky genius Neil Young - the Guess Who do it a bit to fast and without much feeling .. pick up 4 box set and see why Neil was great and Steve Stills only good - sometimes almost bad.
YOUNG IS CRANKY ALRIGHT...very f***ing cranky, seen him call people in the audience f-ing bastards and storm off.. tho nowadays he may have mellowed being in his early eighties, I think...the geniun bit with Neil Young is a bit...wot...fuckin' ridiculous...the twit used to live down the street from me in Winnnipeg, had a group called the Squires...the only thing of genius he did was get the F**** out of Winnipeg !!
Wow you say that Neil lived down the street from you as a kid (sure all of his fans know about the Squires). Did you go to school with him? What was he like when he wasn't cranky? just real curious cause the guy is a hero to many despite his ways (most don't even know about his personality). He was also funny and his Massey Hall concerts show he has wit. Well I don't want to say too much about him that is good .. but just wanted to know what else you knew. Personal encounters or gossip..
I love this song and have the Buffalo Springfield boxed set with 3 versions of which Neil's version is the best. He sung this again at Hammersmith Apollo on 8 March 2008 - it was an amazing version.
These guys were amazing! Since the 60´s they been making and playing a music with a special charater, an unique accent, half folk, half country, turned to rock´n´roll, one formula that only they have developed! If anybody knows where I can find video or audio from the #10 Album, please, let me know, all right? Thanks!
to dispel the "who cut this first" myth it was Neil's acetate from the first Buffalo Springfield album that the Guess Who learned it from. Neil was home visiting his mother Rassy in Winnipeg and happened to stop by where the Guess Who were recording and gave them a preview of the debut Springfield record. This is documented in John Einarson's book "Wheatfield Soul"
Very interesting stuff. I had no idea the Guess Who had anything to do with or ever recorded this song. Their version here is almost identical to the one on the self-titled first LP by the Buffalo Springfield.
Thanks for clarifying this. Judging from some sources on the net, incl. the Wikipedia, one would guess that Young was a sort of emerging star in Canada before coming to US. With Canadian Top 40 hit of this song. In fact, he was what is called a "struggling artist"
the Buffalo Springfield recorded their version SHORTLY after the Guess Who did theirs...not 4 years later! 2 great bands - too bad Cummings is such an ass. He (HAD) the best voice. Neil is much cooler!
hey sis ... he can still perform ... I saw him a few weeks ago ... but to say his voice is like it was before....um...NOOO! Jim Kale was always my favorite anyway (AND ... he can outdrink Cummings - no small feat!)
I was in the USA for 10 years, when I came back to Canada I heard "These Eyes" on the radio and started crying..fuck, I missed Canada. Don't ever forget her!!
This was recorded years before the Buffalo Springfield version. The song was written by Neil Young when he lived in Winnipeg and he gave it to the Guess Who to record. The BufSpring version came out about four years later.
Pity there are no other copies of Let's go out there. All that's left is this version with the Good time music appreciation society. I heard that during one show, the Guess Who covered the entire Sgt.Pepper's album...

I agree crocstimpy. Richie and Stephen Stills, I think. I'm a Buff Springfield and Poco fan and love Richie Furay. I used to play this on guitar; great melody by Neil Young.

great version of one of my favorite Buffalo Springfield songs! they apparently first heard this from Neil himself when he was visiting in Winnipeg before the Springfield's first album came out.
