Hi , I'd like to know what the words meant as well, I'd assumed it was gaelic or Irish . I do know that, Sitamoia, Whiskey in the Jar and Vagabond of the Western World was released as an EP 7" 45 rpm Disc (remember them) back in about 1976/77.
Just been looking through the lp collection and found remebering part 1. I can not believe that this song has not been released on a true album though. The way the lyrics are delivered at the beginning of this song is absolutely breathtaking
When I did a Google search for performances of 'Si do mhamo i' it turned out to be the most rousing Gaelic number imaginable, but aside from the title word (wish I understood Gaelic) I don't get the impression that the Lizzy track really borrows its chant from the Irish tune. Anyone have other thoughts or clues? This is just such a stellar and unexpected composition and performance - thanks again to blacksabfan!
The liner notes of the Remaster of Vagabonds of the western world confirms this and "Little Darling" were recorded with gary moore in 1974 and these are the only two tracks they recorded, not counting bbc sessions.
This is Gary Moore on guitar, there might be another guitar player too..does not sound like Eric Bell. You can hear Gary's style. I am not 100% certain
Didn't Brian Downey wrote this in 1972-1973? I don't remmber, but In a Live Germany from 1974 phil says: here Is a Song calld Sitamoia This was whrited by Brian Downey.
But I can be wrong but I think it was Brian who wrote It. Pitty they didn't Put It on Black Rose album, It Would fit there with Gary and Scott, Right after Black Rose.
I used to listen to music when doing homework, whenever I got to this track I had to put down the pencil and listen to this song until it was finished, had to do that for a a lot of Thin Lizzy songs, plus Rory Gallagher songs, plus Iron Maiden songs, AC/DC, U2, Freddie King, Journey, Metalica, Sony Boy Williamson. Man no wonder I never I got my homework finished to busy rockin out!
'sita moia' is a corruption of the irish 'si do mhaimeo i, cailleach an aigid' which is an old irish childrens lullaby, hence the irish tune on the guitar solo. it means ' she is your mother, the hag with the money!'
@TheNumba9 U mightnt like Sir Bob but he did a hell of a lot for the Sitamoaia tribe in Africa with Live Aid.As far as im concerned, the only man with the absolute right to wear a white linen suit the day of live 8 was Sir Bob.Im sure you'll agree.
I think you mean Andy Gee and John Cann (or DuCann). Those guys came after this song was recorded in the studio and played it live during the brief time they were in Lizzy.
That said, I still think this is Gary Moore. I haven't seen any evidence to the contrary.
ahh right, thanks. Good knowledge there lol. Forgive me im 17 lol, Ive played Lynotts bass at Philomenas house though, im a pretty hardcore fan though :)
Are you guys sure it's Gary Moore on guitar? I was always under the impression it was Eric Bell tearing it up (I think I remember his name on the track on my Remembering Pt. 1 album...plus, it seems more like Eric's style).
I don't own the boxset, but I've seen many reviews of it and they all say it's Gary Moore. Plus, I know Moore played it live with the band the first time he was in Lizzy. I think it was recorded the same time as "Little Darling" which was definitely with Moore. I'm not 100% certain its Moore, but most evidence is telling me it is.
I think the Sitamoaia chant is a loose approximation of some of the words from a traditional Irish song 'Balinasloe Fair'. I was just listening to 'The Best Of The Chieftains' and there is a medley track entitled 'Chase Around the Windmill/Toss the Feathers/Ballinasloe Fair/Cailleac'. When I heard the Ballinasloe Fair part it reminded me of Sitamoaia. I had a listen side by side and sure enough that's where Sitamoaia comes from.
Weird thing about this song: The acapella part at the beginning is in A minor -- and when the instruments kick in, it goes down a half-step. Makes things interesting for me as I try to transcribe this tune.
D'oh! I'm an idiot. I meant that the acapella part was in D minor, and then it went down a half-step; the melody starts on the V, which is the source of my brief confusion. Color me musically dyslexic, I guess....
If you're musicially dyslexic, that would make me musically illiterate, which is true; I can't read music. I can play by ear decently enough to bang a song out after some trial and error though.
Brillaint!! These Lizzy gems brighten up my day. OK cat among the pidgeons now. Anyone got the live versions of Bad Reputation & Opium Trail that was on the "Live Killers" ep?
Ah, NOW you've gone and done it! I always considered this a hopelessly obscure masterpiece. Like "Little Darling," this is a perfect transitional tune between early Lizzy and the twin-lead behemoth they became. "Little Darling" wouldn't have been out of place on "Johnny the Fox," and this would have fit very well on "Fighting."
I had "Remembering" on 8-Track (yeah, I'm THAT old).
This was actually on the 'Remembering' compilation released by Decca in either '74 or '76. Think it was '76. Little Darling also came from the short period with Gary Moore in 74, another great song like this one never on a Lizzy album. Danish Heavy Metal band Pretty Maids covered Little Darling
oooohhhh.... i wish the beatiful guitar solo in the final seconds could last longer...

I have "Remembering Part 1" on vinyl and according to the sleeve notes:
"Sitamoia recorded with Gary Moore, has never been released before".
and:
"Eric Bell left New Years eve 1973, Gary Moore left in the summer of '74"
So there ya have it!
This is a great track and Thin Lizzy are probably the most underrated band of all time.
