Palestine trees bear a strange fruit, Blood on the leaves and blood at the root, Palestine bodies swinging in the breeze, Strange fruit hanging from the olive trees. Pastoral scene of the palestine land, The bulging eyes and a cramped hand , Scent of olives, sweet and fresh, Then the sudden smell of burning flesh. Here is fruit for the vultures to pluck, For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck, For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop, Here is a strange and bitter Palestine crop.
The most important song of my childhood. Not only a touching dialogue between father and daughter but an imparting of wisdom from elder to younger. "The bluebird you search for is right here in your heart."
I love this song and the flip side "upsy daisy"...Thank you so much...brings tears to my eyes to hear this, to reminds me of all of the innocence ...sigh
The true original information: "TOPS" Records 45-R276-49 is on the middle of the center right 4 Hits On Each Record Side “A" Titles: Little Child / Laurie Wayne and Bud Roman THE POOR PEOPLE OF PARIS / Les Anthony and Orchestra Side "B" Ninty Nine Years/Bud Roman Tutti Frutti / Danny Daniels w/Les Anthony and Orchestra
Footnotes: Tony Danza put out a great version and was available here on You Tube for a while but I guess he didn't approve and had it removed.
Danny Kayes version is my "alternate" favorite I am not at all amortized with the Jewish broadway versions because of the jumpy wording and the word changes.
Oh, my. "And I cry, little one, 'cause I'm touched by your words."
My first thought as I began to listen was, "I wish we still sang songs like this with children."
Then I heard the rest of the song. Wow. What powerful lyrics! I've gotta learn this song--and I don't even have children to sing it to. I want it for my own heart. Thanks so much for sharing this.
Oh dear , this is all sooo beautiful !!! One can really HEAR those tears in Danny's voice. Has there ever been a more touching song dialogue between a father and a child ? And with Dena's voice fading gradually away with "Daddy dear..." I broke out crying and just sat helpless in tears for a few solid minutes before I could pull myself together again - Danny dear... Danny dear... Danny dear...
