@Swagz1981 No, no mods on the plunger, just the PF. I cut the bottom of the PF out with a lathe. The spouts on the bottom were too much metal and was loosing the crema.
@photomotor really...its just when i stop the video at 0:55 secs it really looks like you installed something like cork material to take place of the air in the plunger...when i compare to mine, mine is clear, while yours seems brown...thanks
@Swagz1981 nope, nothing modified on the plunger. I have noticed that too much water produces bad results. just a couple ounces of boiling water is perfect. I also lift up on the handles at the same time I add the water. It seems to make it easier to not add too much water. There is always going to be an air gap in there, but its better that its air and not water. My plunger probably looks brown because I have pulled close to 3000 shots with this presso machine. I'm on the 4th plunger gasket.
without a modified PFilter, to get a nice shot i found i needed to disassemble the basket from the PFilter and heat the PFilter up in a cup of boiling water while tamping my grind...once ready, assemble and press...it yielded the best crema IMO...also make sure your pressure on each handle is even...you can lose valuable pressure if some air leaks occur during the press...
@Swagz1981 just leave the basket in and heat up the whole PF assembly. Dry it with a towel before you tamp your grids in there. Also wanted to tell you that the film here is made with still images, about 5 or six of them per second is what you are seeing, and I played around with the frame rate so all of what happened is not seen here. there for it looks like the shot came out really quick, but thats not really how it was. anyway good luck! and take care!
@mouselinkdotbiz that's exactly what I do!! But I suppose I would need to boil water on a wood stove to be authentic :)

great film. intriguing device. grind your beans with a manual burr grinder, and you'll have off-grid coffee for when the electric goes out. ;)

@photomotor Thats awesome, do you have any stills on that process, (cutting off the bottom with a lathe? ) I would love to do the same.

I heat up the funny little macchina in the sink with hot water before making ay shots.

Funny macchina (and nice video). Is the hot water after filling it in this cold metal housed water tank still hot enough to get a espresso perfetto?

Which grinder are you using there? Very nice set up by the way.

I have a Virtuoso Baratza grinder.

Are you using an 'after market' filter spout? I see a lot of the other videos have a single spigot, yours seems to make the best shot though.
Outstanding little demo reel :)

I cut the bottom of the PF out on a mechanical lathe. looses less heat that way, better crema.

Typically refered to as a naked or bottomless portafilter by the coffee geeks. Nice....
