They just uses what works, or in this case worked. Just because something is old didn't mean it wouldn't work, just need different power source and material. Most inventions or devices can be traced to earlier ideas, just refined with the times. The orginals are in The U.S. Army Transportation Museum at Fort Eustis Virginia and the Space Museum in Washington D.C.

How do I know them? Watched some work when they came out, otherwise its a bit of a hobby, unsual aircrft that is.

This is a rear vehicle proposal based on the original piaseki air-jeep of the 70s which had the same basic design but lacked forward thrusters.

In other words, a nearly identical vehicle to this has flown exactly in the manner seen in this vid 30+ years ago.
