I think that was a bit of a stretch. Fungi are just another family of life not godly warriors seeking to destroy sentient life for the good of planet. Planetary consciousness if it exists wouldnt need to rely on fungi sapping info from the soil to react.

Azovie, it's alien life named "fungus" by humans that traveled to another planet. I don't think it's related in any genetic way to fungus from Earth. It just reminded the colonists of (Earth)fungus, so that's what they named it. :)

I've taken a course in fungi. It's incredible, I believe the largest single living organism on THIS planet is a fungus of the Armillaria genus. So.. that a whole planet could be covered by an organism like this via fungal stalk networks (hyphae technically) could definately be possible, but that the organism itself would have planetary consciousness??

Well in this case yes. The Fungus on Planet really WAS sentient because it was designed to be so by the Caretaker's ancestors (the aliens in alien crossfire, also the same aliens who build the monoliths on the planet). The Fungus is really like a giant brain, and the mind worms, white blood cells.
