i dont know if i am a punk or not, i dont dress like one (i know a lot of punks didnt have mohawks and leather jackets/ combat boots etc.) i am pretty much myself, everyone else around me is pretty much being like someone else to fit in but not me, i like what i am but i am very fond of punk music and just found out from my dad that he was one durin the 80's, but i jsut dont know can someone help me :P, but anyways i dont think punk is dead but jsut really underground like it was back then.
@waseldo U.K. Punk seemed a little more childish too. If you were to ask me my favorite punk band as a 15 year old I would say the Sex Pistols. As someone older now I would say the American punks seem more interesting...but's that's because the British punks were barley out of their teens and the American punks were mostly older......so trying hard to act outrageous just to shock seems a bit played out to someone who's already been through that.
@Flipper79able You are right propably.I think I just tried to say that MUSICALLY ,US punk could never escaped blues tradition.Which doesn`t work for me with punk ,but when blues meet noise in later bands like Cows or Unsane ,its bliss.
@waseldo When I hear you talk about an American punk band that didn't leave the blues behind the first band that comes to mind are The Heartbreakers. If you think of American punk though they were so diverse it's hard to talk about an American punk style. The Ramones had the most basic bone headed three chords sped up like Chuck Berry on speed. Blondie was like pop music.Television and the Talking heads were like rock for art students. The Dead Boys sounded more like the Damned, Pistols and Clash.
@waseldo PS I'm saying with the American punk,no matter who you were their was something for everyone. The Damned,The Pistols and The Clash seemed very similar so if that's the kind of punk you like than you got it, but if you like diversity American punk is more your style. That's why I also liked British punk as a teenager because they were in your face and very angry where as an adult my tastes are more diverse that's why I like American punk now because they weren't posing the way teens do.
Everyone, I have made a video about boy bands and the music buisness and talking about underground music. You TUbe have tried to dissable the sound but I put the text in the "Description" box under the screen. Please come and check it out!
One of the worst things that occurred was that late comers got to define very narrowly what was originally a much broader and more bohemian phenomenon. They seized on the most superficial aspect of the music and fashion. The guy always ckokes on his own self-righteousness.
@PeterMayer i'm afraid so.The whole punk culture and phenomena was nutured in the u.k.The ramones do not by themselves consitute a whole movement or scene and the dolls were a glam band or if you like an inept stones tribute act.Nice try ....
@PeterMayer wow newsflash musicians influence each other shocker !!!! thank you petermayer without your
amazing revelations we all would surely die. By the way what the hell has the byrds,GRAM PARSONS ,chuck berry etc got to do with your original point of the sex pistols ripping the dead boys.
The guy from the Dead Kennedys is an idiot. He's comparing Blondie to the Knack? Blondie was playing CBGB in 1974. They adopted the Mod look very early to get away from the glitter scene they came out of. And it still took them five years to break through in the US, which is nuts and gives you a sense of how difficult it was to overcome the punk label in the US.
What I really dont like about this overall well done and researched documentary is the unexplainable omission of the whole American 80s hardcore punk scene. I mean, they show Limp Bizkit and Blink 182 and they skip Bad Religion, Social Distortion, NOFX, Descendents and the Misfits? YOU GOTTA BE FUCKING KIDDING ME MAN

no disrepect but the new york scene means nothing to me at all never did ,they were boring . england had much better bands especially later on in 1980 1981 that was the best time for me and many many others as teenagers in england. black flag bad brains were the only american bands we listened to .oh and dk . but there was way to much going on england and europe to even care what america was doing . to us they seemed realy old ,and punk was about being young and surviving the straits attacks
I think they wanted to say that punk would had been different if those two hadn't been there. They were a force behind the movement since he was the manager of several bands and Vivian gave them a diffirent look that every one wanted to emulate.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
honestly, and im sure im gunna get shit for this, but to me punk in the 70's was boring. It didnt start getting good until the second wave in the early 80's, when "hardcore" started around the world.
gekonum, I'm a 51 year old punk from "back in the day". Let me just say, "Yeah, you got it man!!!" Your comment is the absolute essence of punk! Great to know that its in good hands! :-]
Old heads and new should all pay attention ... it's not who came first, it's not what you wear, it's not how old you are, it's not where it came from. What's important is that you be yourself, push your own envelop ... and play your own music!
yeh thats shane he was a punk and was in a punk band called the nipple erectors before the pogues and when he sings its defo punk singing not irish singing in the pogues u kno
damn right! lol. Listen to the ramones..it's good...but than listen to the sex pistols...it's like the new and improved version...but still different.
@PeterMayer As far as I'm concerned, both the US and UK scenes started at the same time with minimal influence from each other. It's said in this documentary that a lot of the New York bands were branded Punk, even if they themselves didn't consider themselves to be Punk.
In the UK, it was born out of poverty and frustration, what with various strikes and the lack of money. Completely different, but still branded as Punk.
What with the world as it is, we should get some good songs soon. Yay!
the ramones played my high school in 1976 and were booed off after 4 songs, the headliner was called maze, they did aerosmith and boston covers and people loved them. i can't stress enough how bad 1974-75 were before punk. there was no hope on the horizon, music was over! thank God punk happened!

The u.s didnt create punk the u.k did. the ramones, the dolls, dead boys etc were just
slightly faster then usual rock n roll bands. America only fully embraced and got punk when the hardcore scene started in the early 80's.
