In fact, it was Roger's idea they dress in drag. They were doing a parody of this British soap opera called "Coronation Street". Many people - unlike in the UK - failed to see the soap-opera connection and interpreted the video as an open declaration of transvestitism and Mercury's homosexuality. Queen is cool.

This song is not about Freddie Coming out as gay. Queen's basist, John Deacon, wrote this song in means of frustration that he had with someone or something, I'm not sure which. In some bands, whichever member wrote the song will sing it, such as The Beatles, but there are groups like Queen who decided that the lead singer should sing all band member's written material. Queen was one of those groups.
