This film shows Judy Garland as a very healthy & impressive dramatic actress & NOT the "drunk or drugged" woman the media has let many ppl to believe. Sure she had her own personal demons who doesnt? But how many drunken or drugged up ppl can sing and act with such force in a career that spanned 45 out of her 47 yrs & still break show biz records w/sell out concerts. This scene proves once more, why she was a living legend & the World's Greatest Entertainer. Her eyes in this clip says it all.
She was a brilliant and underappreciated actor. She should have beaten Rita Moreno for best suppporting actress that year, but Hollywood was never in her corner. They also robbed her of her best actress award for A Star is Born in 1954 as well.
She would have done beautifully as a straight actress as evidenced here and in The Clock in 1945 as well.
We are lucky to have at least these solid performances, including her wonderful work with Burt Lancaster in A Child is Waiting too.
to me this is very important those bastards should have all been given death howard cain very good actor judy garland maxilliam shell werner klimper burt lancaster great actors.
if u ask me every GOD FUCKEN NAZI JUDGE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SENTENCED TO DEATH. HITLER POISIONED GERMANY. DO NOT GET ME WRONG I DO LIKE GERMANS BUT NOT THOSE WHO COMETED EVIL MAY THEY ALL ROT IN GOD DAM FUCKEN HELL. AS FOR THE MOVIE IT WAS GREAT
In all of her movies, Judy's crying is just so amazing. I don't think she ever had to sing a note. She was such a phenomenally raw and vulnerable actress. I could even imagine her as a Juliet or Ophelia.
Howard Caine does very well here too. His facial expressions while in the foreground are hard to look away from. Much better than what he will be remembered for.
such a dramatic performance and great to see cast agaisnt type, pity she never had the chance to do more dramatic roles.
of cause today had this been made, this movie would have featured much more distressing scenes and dialoge which would have been too strong in 1961 cencorship.
Marvelous perfomance!
