I'm confused. Why is everything written in english? Can most Japanese actually read it as a second language, or is it just some pretty letters to look at like when americans get kanji tattoos.

Of course they can read that! Come on, they are all teenagers, and they all want to be unique. And they are all influenced by everything outside of Japan. Of course they can read that. In fact, probably anyone from any country would be able to read that and give them hugs.

haha. actually in Japan, English is a required course starting in middle school i think.... not sure on when exactly, but it IS a required course. and, from what my Sensei has told us, reading is emphasized more than speaking, so I'm sure everyone can read those signs just fine. ;D (i personally think speaking is more important than reading tho...)

@SpadedDominic English is there mandatory second language curriculum in High school for them. so Free Hugs is pretty simple phrase for them to understand
