It was sorta a romantic gesture,

Im not entirely sure about the history of it,

But Cuddy knew of House way back when she was in med school. However sometimes it is implied that there was more deeper than Cuddy just knowing him as a legend. Season 3 house says "You gave me everything I asked because one night I gave everything you wanted" and Cuddy says "... That ship sailed long ago House, Get over me"
