so... he's surrounded by 'demons' that he's fighting... there is no legitimate reason for hm to continue sheathing the sword other than that they love the shot of him UNsheathing it. THAT'SSSSS bothering me.
@PhantoMPhreeK92 Actually there is a reason. Vergil's sword fighting style is Iaido, its the art of drawing the katana, cutting down the opponent, flipping b'lood from the blade, and then re-sheathing the katana in one fluid movement. You should look it up, its an interesting style.
@Vampirella2999 Well that is retarded. In anything but a martial arts sparring-session, or movies, it would get you killed. I mean, great that it's actually legitmate to Martial Arts (which I know NOTHING about) adds some spice to the otherwise lacksadaisical story telling BUT it still confuses the hell outta me as to it's usefullness.
DMC has always been great in characterization, and poor at executing their great ideas. It's... the socialism of the video game world?
@PhantoMPhreeK92 You don't understand. Iaido is based on the philosophy of cutting down one's opponent in a single swift motion, killing the opponent before a real battle ensues. So it would only "get you killed" if you were the other guy.
If you are evaluating the usefulness of Vergil's moves as an actual martial art, that is an error on your part. Nothing in DMC is really useful or realistic. Vergil's style is, as most things in DMC, inspired by reality but guided by stylishness.
@moseslmpg Here's the deal, I'm a fan of DMC, I'm not dogging anything but the small infractions like this where I see no sense in sheathing a sword mid-fight, no matter the 'style'; your attempts to make me out as ignorant are about as flawed as the logic of that style. No offense. And I said it's good at characterization, I.E. always has had very colorful characters in each installment. Which is irrelevant to your trying to discredit me with the 'in flux' comment.
@PhantoMPhreeK92 What don't you get? The reason he sheathes the sword is that pretty much he's about to attack sumone. Its an art.I can't believe you're trying to put in a realistic thing into a video game. Like Moses said, Vergil's style is inspired by a realistic sword art, but of course the sheathing and such is meant to be Stylish (for a DMC fan you're pretty much ignoring the STYLISH part). Everytime Vergil sheathes his sword you know he's about to cut sumone up.
@PhantoMPhreeK92 And don't try to get all offensive. Just try to do research on the art before you judge it so hastily. Its like you're trying to tell Iaido masters that their art is useless and serves no purpose, when in fact their art is the foundation for Kendo and such.
And its not irrevelant, you brought up that the style is useless and that sheathing his sword is meaningless in a fight. Try not to cop out now since you're acting quite arrogant in your comment.
@Vampirella2999 Haha. Darling, don't try to act like you know what you're saying. Clearly you don't. SENSE, is what said. That it makes no SENSE. And it doesn't. STYLE has tomake sense, or it isn't stylish. As in fashion has a sense, and rules that make it work. Such as no spots with stripes. (I.E. Hence the term fashion SENSE) you can be over-the-top and unrealistic if I still see a reason for it as the veiwer.
@Vampirella2999 Further, I am entitled to my opinion. People call slingpaint an art too, doesnt suddenly make it great. I said that DMC was CONSISTENT and was countered with a 'DMC had never been anything but 'in flux' I.E. DMC has never been anything but everchanging. Which was their way of trying to make me out to be ignorant to the franchise. THAT is what I was referring to as irrelevant. Again, you don't understand what I'm taking about and yet feel the need to comment. How curious.
@Vampirella2999 Well, for one, I think you should look up the words senseless and useless and discover the difference between them- then perhaps you could comprehend what I said. Secondly, I think he should, idk keep the sword out while it's in use? You don't holster a gun so you can pull it back out and shoot- the sword doesn't make any more sense.
Senseless- as in, without intelligence
Useless- as in, ineffective
Do you see the difference, or should I dumb it down further?
@PhantoMPhreeK92 You don't have to be a smartass ya know. I simply asked why you think Vergil's swordart is useless and all of a sudden i get sum half-assed answer. You're trying to equate a real art into a video game. That's like questioning why Dante's guns have infinite ammo when you know precisely why that is.
You yourself aren't even sure what Vergil should be doing while he's not sheathing his sword (also he does swipe it alot, see the DMC 3 prologue).
@Vampirella2999 You entered this conversing with venom in your words. You thought you could throw a couple big words at me, and I'd go away. Anyway, if indeed that is the case, then I deem the style just as senseless for any real combat as I do in the game. The only way it would be effective is in a suspended reality, and if you were really that outnumbered in say, warfare, your opponent would make short work of you, no matter how well a fight you put up or how good your training in laido.
@PhantoMPhreeK92 lol you can't "deem" an ancient martial art useless, because the very fact that it was used contradicts any such contention. And swords didn't suddenly stop separating sinew and bone with the invention of the gun; they can still kill you just as good. If you are saying that sword arts aren't useful in modern wars, then that's obvious and irrelevant. We are only talking about Vergil in the game, regardless of your high and mighty judgment on the topic of way of the sword.
@PhantoMPhreeK92 BTW, you seem the be the one with a consistent (i.e. not in flux) drip of venom in your posts. I'm not really sure what big words she has used against you. Maybe you were thinking of me.
Anyway, you've now moved from criticizing the details of the style to producers' actual reasons for using it for Vergil (which you implicitly concede is due to its stylishness)? Just come off it already. Such "foolishness," really...
@moseslmpg Actually, i started this with a simpl statement, and you and I engaged in a conversation about how wrong I was aboput a 'sword-art' which was actually pretty simple. Then the other had to jump in with the words and i qoute 'what don't you get'. Anything I said as just a comment. Simple statement of my opinion, very simple. But you and Vampirella had to make sure and split hairs and try to contradict and alienate me for a statement that had no real 'sting' to it.
@PhantoMPhreeK92 You're the one splitting hairs. We are just explaining why he does what he does in the fictional game that takes place in a fictional world built on the supremacy of style over substance. There isn't anything to disagree with. If you want to argue about Iaido itself (which, if we were splitting hairs, would be iaijutsu with battoujutsu moves incorporated), then first educate yourself, and then argue on an Iaido site. I doubt they will be as charitable in their responses.
@PhantoMPhreeK92 And as for being contradicted and alienated, anyone who reviews this convo will see that your posts were tinged with far more vitriol than either mine or vampi's. Understandable since you felt cornered, but denying it won't help you out.
And yes, you have your opinion, and that's all great. Other people have opinions too. If you don't want people to contradict your opinions, either don't post them or don't follow up when people scrutinize facetious statements.
@moseslmpg Mmmk, ANYWAY. Regardless of every statement you just made beng completely and utterly invalid, I'm leaving this here. You can continue to 'police' my statements all you want.
I don't even have it in me to leave another rebuttle (since you both obviously like to paraphrase and draw things other than what was said from my posts), you're just ignorant, that's all there is to it.
@PhantoMPhreeK92 Yes we're ignorant unlike you who deems a real sword art useless, even though you don't practice Iaido. *sarcasm* Next time, don't post about stuff you don't know about. Just post like you do all your other post, being a fangirl and drooling over the guys. That's what you do best and let it stay that way.
@Vampirella2999 Baha, OK. Revoking my former statement, ACTUALLY you're still the one misqouting me. So, go ahead. Make me out to be a 'fan girl' all you want. If that makes you sleep better at night with all your anime plushie bullshit. I'm going to continue being informed on things that actually effect th eworld around me. (Starting with literature, which tells me the difference between two words that can completely change the direction of an arguement being held with morons.)
@Vampirella2999 And just for the record, you and I had a perfectly cordial conversation in which I expressed that no matter the reason nor art, sheating your weapon during a battle doesn't make sense. Therefore I deem it SENSELESS, I'm sure it's perfectly useful WHILE THE SWORD IS OUT. But when you found someone else who backed up your statements, THEN you decide to jump my ass. Lol. I bet your a liberal, they like to twist statements an travel in packs too.
@PhantoMPhreeK92 Anime Plushie Bullshit? Being a Liberal? Ok...WTF r u talking about? Seriously! Name-calling isn't making you look any better. You obviously didn't research about Iaido, so there's no reason to even discuss the topic further. Now you're just spouting stuff that has nothing to do about the topic at hand. Just stop before you embarrass yourself even more. Anyway, I'm done with the convo
@Vampirella2999 BTW, before you came in and jumped my ass, I was actually joking despite my standing condemnation that there's really no reason for him to use this kind of martial arts OTHER than the way it comes off on screen.
@PhantoMPhreeK92 In other words, you shouldn't say something is senseless and useless when you don't know the intricacies of the swordart he uses. I even told you do to research on Iaido, telling someone to do research isn't bad ya know. But you took it has an insult to your opinion. You're on Youtube and you can find sum Iaido videos, there's one that's interesting that's called Samurai Spirit Iaido, you should check it out.
@PhantoMPhreeK92 If you really need it to make sense, just consider that it forms the basis of Vergil's Iaido kata, the established form of that particular art.
On a side note, criticizing DMC for its story is just getting tired and boring. DMC3 had the most well realized plot and narrative of any of the games and credit should be given where it is due (not that it has anything to do with Vergil). And just to clear up a common misconception: DMC has not "always been" anything except in flux.
@berzerker16 Couldn't agree more. But I think he HAD to be for Vergil. Because that's the main difference between Dante and Vergil's fighting styles-Vergil takes his fighting style a lot more seriously than Dante.
