a true movie legend...the craziest thing is, it looks like her ultmate legacy will not be her films, but as the mother of modern wireless technology. Who knew? lol
Anyone familiar with the NYC media scene knows how they guessed her so fast. "Were you on TV this past week-end?" was the give-away. Shows the men panelists probably were in love with her, & her quick NY visit was not unnoticed! The Freq.-hopping was a simple transfer of MECHANICAL random, to ELECTRICAL random, as in "Purple Code" to "Benchley". I have been doing similar thing with Fuel-Free Transport via "Mag Amp Gen".
I had a sneaking suspicion that this was not the entire mystery guest segment because of how fast they guess her and I was right. I've been recording all the What's My Line episodes on DVR hoping of getting this one and finally did. She's totally charming and very warm, not at all aloof as she's sometimes potrayed. I love the way she shakes everyones hands at the end, I call it the hand hug, where you envelope the persons hand with both of yours. My Grandma did it too and she taught it to me.
I read somewhere that The Fairest of Them All was also a guest panelist on What's My Line, twice. She went on a lot of Game shows, I'd love to see those!
Hedy was a class act! There never was before nor since one that could match her. From what I've read she didn't die a pauper by any means. Wealth does not determine intelligence, look at Paris Hilton.
Hedy Lamar (born Hedy Kiesler) was at the very top of her profession, having earned tens of millions, but she died a pauper. She is one of the true rags to riches to rags stories. No one can deny that she was blessed with extraordinary beauty, but whoever credit her with being "one of the smartest" has not considered her fall into poverty from extreme wealth.
lots of geniuses and inventors died poor, that does NOT mean they werent smart. or that a flash of insight in eariler years may not last thru out their lives.
Genius and "smart" are not always the same. A genius does something with natural, outstanding abilty. That same person can act self-destructively in ways a "regular" person micht never even think of.
Hedy Lamar was great in many ways. Allowing herself to sink from obscene wealth into financial ruin is not a sign of "smarts", but a sign of weakness that even a genius can fall victim to.
true, genius and smart are not always the same, but that point is still irrelevant. i dont know what definition you are using for "smarts" but that word for most connotations do not adequately describe what it takes to become or stay "rich" in old age. .lots of "smart" people have lost their fortunes, if anyone has been paying attention to the news, can you say "entron" or "bears and stern"? not to mention the noble-prize winning mathmeticians that had a futures company that failed totally
Hedy Lamar was less of a "genius" than Judy Garland or Marilyn Monroe. All 3 lived self-destructive lives. Were they intelligent? Sure. Were they able to handle fame and fortune? Hardly. Hedy lived to be an old woman, but she had "pissed away" her fortune long before that.
Some still think of here as glamorous (which she certainly was), but please don't ccall her physical beauty "genius", it's a gift. Inability to deal with wealth is stupidity.
i didnt call her beauty "genius". and label "inability to deal with wealth" stupidity is a
limited definition to say the least. look this is not complicated. the concept of frenquency-hopping she co-invented with her musician friend during WWII was so advanced it took nearly twenty years for the military to produce the technology that could take advantage of it and the uses of it include many of todays industries like cell phones. it was an act of genius, simple as that.
she was actually born hedwig eva maria kiesler! and she loved vienna tooooooo much maybe it was her choice! she was beautiful!but her house was the house in the sound of music how beautiful!
She was a very smart lady. I recently read that she died in Florida in 2000 with an estate of around $2 million. She left her oldest son out of the will, but he contested and got $50,000. Reminded me of the recent Leona Helmsley will.
Indeed, she WAS a very smart lady. In World WarII she came up with the idea of "frequency hopping" for use in torpedo guidance systems. Her idea, adapted to the use of transistors resulted in today's cellular telephone technology, and anti-jamming devices currently in use in sattelites. (Look her up under "Lady Inventors" on Google.
This was the mid-fifties. Ms. Lamarr probably hesitated when answering the question about her being a moviestar because her movie career was practically non-existent by the mid-fifties. She did "My Favorite Spy" with Bob Hope in 1951. After that her next and last starring role in an American picture was "The Female Animal" in 1958. She completely dropped out of sight after that and did not appear in public again until she was arrested for shoplifting in 1965.
She had brains and beauty that is rare in a woman.
