This video makes me a little sad. This is Oscar after he had a stroke and lost the majority of ability on his left hand. But someone said that Oscar with one hand was still better than just about anyone else with two.
His performance of this piece with Joe Pass is incredible, if you're seeing this one first, you ain't seen nothing yet, check it out.
i'm a big fan of oscar peterson, and i love his originals like 'blues etude', 'cakewalk', etc. But now i'm curious about his stroke,, coz in his 'post 1993 stroke' cds['live in paris'(1996) and 'a summer night in munich' (1998)], his technicque is still better compared to his performance in 2003 in musikverein. In his 2003 concert, there are plenty of 'mistakes' and his stamina seems decreasing. So, is it true if he got his stroke more than once? I didn't mean anything, just wanna know d truth
Man he is great, even without his left hand."loosing" one hand must be hard for someone like him playing musik his entire life. I play the piano and for me it would be the badest thing that could happen.
Saw him a few times in the 80's. Fabulous!!! Saw him again 2 years ago in Brussels, Belgium. Must admit it was rather embarassing. He wasn't able to use his left hand, couldn't keep up with the rhythm section, and made quite some "mistakes". A newspaper wrote "Oscar Peterson plays slower than his shadow"... Very sad. He used to be the greatest... Nevertheless many standing ovations during the concert, but probably more as a tribute for his career than for his skills during that evening.
Herbie, chic, monty, ahmad, mcoy, joe, cyrus that it as far as piano everyone else run of the mill stock player. Oscar was the standard that all musician hav as far as keys are concerned. Oscar play for God unti there's no more ...amen
I saw Monty Alexander,Neils Pederson & Grady Tate at a concert back in 1985, Dizzy Gillespie in '86 and then to top it off I saw Ray Charles, B.B.king and Ray Brown in 1990(I even got Ray Brown's autograph) but I never saw the late, great Oscar Peterson.Quite a Loss!
Thank you for all the pleasure, Oscar. You were unique. It will be a fascinating four hander when you join Art Tatum Up There ... Mike Jones, Jackie Jones and Norman Giller of SootsJazz. We are organsing a tribute featuring UK Oscar soundalike Craig Milverton at the Lights Theatre, Andover, on January 25. British TV has been disgraceful with their lack of proper tribute programmes to a true genius.
bbc did do a 5 hour peterson special, but twas very late. I was compelled to stay up till 1 to watch it all thou, too dam golden to miss. Campagin for more tribute programmes
Glad to have met you in real life. It was one of the greatest moments of my life to shake your hand and talk to you. Im sure you are jammin´ it up with the other jazz-cats in jam-session-heaven!

Oscar is better than 90% of the jazz piano players with one hand. First there was Art and then there was Oscar there will never be another.
