@EngelNr666 - I love that there's an Ozric album in there although, to be honest, I didn't realize that they had a new one out! I haven't heard Jane Weaver or Smoosh, so I'll have to look into them. Just recently got into Sharon Van Etten. I really need to get on board with Opeth, too. So many people have raved about them.
Great video and great choices! Bright Eyes is also one of my favourite records of 2011. I just made a video with "Jejune Stars", i'm gonna put it as a response! I'm looking for your '50 words for snow' video!!! I'm waiting my copy to arrive! ;)
@ilovelinus - Thanks Arturo! Still haven't had time to get the KB video edited and up. Perhaps this weekend? I really like her new one, and I think you will too.
pt. 2. You know I have not heard one note of that Gabriel, not sure I even knew it was out. I thought Scratch My Back was his most recent... did And I'll Scratch Yours come out and I missed that too? Where the artist cover Gabriel??? I will look around for some samples of that Admiral Fallow and see what I think, sounds promising. Have to check out that Kate Bush too, people are raving. Great to see you and Emma hamming it up again, always good to see an EoLoVoX video notification in my inbox.
@DoctorDeadwax (see pt. 2, raise pt. 3) I'm unaware of the release of 'And I'll Scratch Yours,' if it ever came out. Gabriel toured this summer with the New Blood Orchestra and there were signs up at the show about an upcoming album and DVD. This be that!
Definitely check out Admiral Fallow. As a fellow fan of 'Fisherman's Blues' and 'Room To Roam,' I think you would like them.
As always, thanks so much for the great comments and kind words!
so what you are saying here Rob is you will be showing your 11 favourite LPs from 2011? I think I get it. :P Adele, over her just from Sirius radio in the car, she has got a great voice, that I never want to hear again. LOL! The Decemberists I found sounded a bit too much like REM for me, seemed almost to be playing on that sound, it's not that it was bad, I actually liked a couple of songs that were again overplayed on Sirius, but eventually that REM aftertaste got to me...
@DoctorDeadwax You should, assuming that you liked a couple of their songs that you heard, give some of their older material a try. I definitely prefer their stuff off of Castaways and Cutouts, Picaresque, and Her Majesty.
@DoctorDeadwax - (part1) To me, Calamity Song is the most REM-sounding track on The King Is Dead, and I believe that was intentional. Peter Buck plays on that track, and I believe it was an homage to early REM. It's a shame that that got overplayed. One of the reasons that I gave up radio a long time ago, and never warmed up to satellite radio, is the tendency to ruin music by playing it too much. The rest of that album varies a lot more than Calamity Song might indicate!
@DoctorDeadwax (part 2) The song "Rox In The Box" sound quite Celtic and even contains bits of "The Raggle Taggle Gypsy". There's also a heavy Gillian Welch & David Rawlings influence here. The lyrics, too, are vastly different from anything Michael Stipe ever wrote. Again, I'm not denying the REM influence (I actually like it because I'm a HUGE fan of early REM) but I really feel that there's more to 'The King Is Dead' than that.
@EoLoVoX No problem, I will keep an eye out for any other new bands I think you may like. Have you heard the Roddie Woomble album that he did with John McCusker and Kris Drever? Kris was a school friend of mine and is big in the scottish folk scene.
@DocStrangelyStrange - You knew/know Kris Drever?! That's amazing! I know the record that you're talking about, although I only have it in digital format. (I had a subscription to eMusic there for a while.) It's good! I'm a fan of McCusker's, too. I became aware of his talents when he was in The Battlefield Band and followed his career closely during the time that he was with Kate Rusby. Wildly talented, as is Drever, although in a quieter way. So cool that you know Drever!

I love the Kate Bush album, it's so purcussive, also love the Elbow album, though that one had to grow on me a bit first, I didn't know about them before.
@mgfoster - Last year, I was watching a stream of Elbow's set at Coachella, knowing that you were there. I kept wondering if you were lucky enough to be in the audience.
Their new one had to grow on me, too. I found that strange since I've been such a big fan of theirs since their first album. However, each time I listened to it, I liked it better. Albums like that tend to have real staying power for me. I think you would like any of their albums, to be honest.
@EoLoVoX No problem, I will keep an eye out for vinyl, or anything cool. There is a documentary called Scotland Invade SXSW that they are on. You should watch it, they do a track with King Creosote! Also my friend Iain was in one of the bands, and you can laugh at him getting shut down by the cops!
@DocStrangelyStrange - Thanks in advance for keeping an eye out for Admiral Fallow goodies for me. I really appreciate it! I'll definitely check out that documentary you mentioned. I'm a sucker for most things Scottish, hence the placement of AF and KC in this list. I love Frightened Rabbit, Sons & Daughters, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Idlewild/Roddy Woomble, and the list goes on. I've actually been jealous of you for living there, but in a good way of course!
Also sorry for the double post, my regular gmail account is tied to a different youtube account name and sometimes it doesn't sign out of it. Just so you know what happened there, lol.
@KoolRanchDressing - Ha! No problem, although that does explain who "BeaverStickzor" is! Thanks for watching, River. Always a pleasure to hear from you!
Very cool. We're even more behind and still want to do a best of 2011. We got like over seventy 2011 albums on vinyl so it's been fun trying to process it all.
I like the past Elbow albums but didn't dig the new one as much.
I lived in Portland for years but somehow never really listened to the Decemberists, even though they rule the city with an iron fist, lol.
Are you not a fan of PJ Harvey? That's like not being a fan of oxygen to me, lol.
@KoolRanchDressing (1 of 2) Looking forward to seeing your best of 2011 if you put one up. I bought a ton of music last year, too. I tried several ways to narrow my choices down for a video like this, and finally settled on the 11 new releases that we listened to most frequently. In that sense, the Kate Bush and Tom Waits may have been cheating a little, but I anticipate listening to those frequently in at least the early part of this year!
@KoolRanchDressing (2 of 2) The newest Elbow didn't really excite me at first, but it has really grown on me. Each time I listened, I liked it more. That's often a very good sign!
What got me into The Decemberists was Colin Meloy's love of old Scots-English folk songs and murder ballads. I love that stuff, and their music feels like a contemporary extension of those songwriting traditions.
There is a bell that has never gone off with me for PJ Harvey...but I'm working on it!
Nice video Rob and Emma! well done, that 50 words is also one of my fav from last year. I must say it could be her best lp since 'hounds of love'! Nice picks, I'll check the ones I don't know. Elbow for example, never heard of them/ Little dragon is a cool one I agree (don't have it for the moment) Thanks for sharing, and feel free to check out my picks from 2011 in a previous video I've made, maybe you'll find smthg interesting! Cheers from switzerland
@Chris4127basket - Thanks Chris! I did catch your picks of 2011 video. You had so many albums I loved that I think I commented that I was going to look up some of the ones that I didn't know. We're on the same wavelength!
Elbow is SO good. Some have called them "prog without the solos," although I don't think that alone does them justice. Their albums can be difficult to find on vinyl, at least over here, but they are a consistently excellent band. Highly recommended!
@EoLoVoX Haha, yes indeed, now I remember you've already seen my video, sorry, I'm confused because there are so many videos/comments etc... sometimes I'm lost, lol! Thanks for recommending elbow, I'll check it out most definitely!
I m quite tired of Adele... but i confess...she deserve her place here...
I just made an overdose and don't even have the album...
At the 3 first month after Adele release of her 2nd album i was quite close to buy it ...i like it... but then ... i had so many other albums to buy...and now i don't like this overexposure of it...
And to not have an Adele album became quite original... and i like it to keep it that way...
@BohemianConspiracy - You know, I'm with you on that. I was blown away by Adele's voice when 19 came out, but the hype and popularity that followed the release of 21 was just overwhelming. Yes, she has an amazing voice and, in general, I like the songs she writes. When you hear her songs almost everywhere you go, though, it has a way of burning you out. "Overexposure" and "overdose" are very good way to put it.
@sonicmainliner - That makes me smile. It really deserves that spot, though. Not only is ISAM an album that completely blew me away last year, as did seeing Tobin's live show for it, but 2011 really turned into The Year Of Amon Tobin for me. More on that in another video. I hope.
@sonicmainliner - That makes me smile. It really deserves that spot, though. Not only is ISAM an album that completely blew me away last year, as did seeing Tobin's live show for it, but 2011 really turned into The Year Of Amon Tobin for me. More on that in another video. I hope.
Peter Gabriel "New Blood" was a must-have. It`s good to have instrumental versions too on disc 2. I wished they had done this also with the "Scratch My Back"-album. I think we can say Peter put a lot of energy in this orchestral project, which deserves a lot of respect. Great tour and great rearrangements. Thanks also to all who were involved into this: all the staff at Real World, John Metcalfe, Bob Ezrin and all the virtuoso orchestral players. To sum it up: "New Blood (Live) ROCKS !".
I love the instrumental versions on the second disc of the New Blood CD. The orchestra does such an incredible job that it's well worth focusing on that alone at times. I picked up the New Blood: Live In London DVD, too, but I haven't found the time to sit down and watch it yet.
@EoLoVoX yes i had the opportunity to see the "New Blood"-show live, which was fantastic. He performed the whole "Scratch my Back"-album on the 1st half of the show. His vocal performance was great. I like the cover and art work of the "New Blood"-DVD. Great job by the camera men. Especially the live version of orchestral "Darkness" on this DVD sounds amazing.
@Cimbarius - When I saw him in Milwaukee, he did a couple songs from 'Scratch My Back' and then it was into the 'New Blood' material. I think they may have been trying to time things so as not to compete with the Summerfest fireworks show. They used the fireworks as an intermission. No complaints, though. It was a fantastic show! Better than I thought it would be. I've been a PG fan for a long time and he just gets better and better!
Some good picks there guys, glad you didn't go down the "i will show this to look cool" route. Nice to see Admiral Fallow, not many people here have heard of them!
If my son thinks something like Bright Eyes is his favourite album at the age of eleven, I will consider it "job done". I can't wait to start sharing music with him.
@DocStrangelyStrange - Thanks Kevin. I'm glad you know of Admiral Fallow. I just love their music! Since they're Scottish, if you ever hear of a vinyl release from them, PLEASE let me know!
I know your son is going to have great taste in music. I mean, how could he not?!
Decemberists over Adele any day, sorry mate. Great video mind. Its funny how your daughter can't keep still in the videos, my Daughter is the exact same - with or without sugar ;)
@vinylated - Sorry? Decemberists were definitely higher ranked than Adele for me! (...#4 in this video) In fact, Adele probably wouldn't even have made the list if my wife and daughter had not been so obsessed with her record.
I know what you mean about sitting still. Must be a kid thing. No sugar necessary!
@frankrideau - The main reason for that bit at the start was that I got my first and only copyright strike with a video that I made from clips at an Amon Tobin show last year. I was going to play short clips of the music that we were showing here, but I figured that there would be several records companies that would have a problem with it. The stupid thing is that this sort of exposure only encourages people to explore more of what they hear and like. Copyright laws frustrate me.
the dynamic duo is at it again! great video, and great choices. woo hoo tom waits made the list, as did amon tobin! did you hear about that tobin box set coming out this year?
@babylonseeker - Oh man, I'm drooling over that Tobin box set. Seriously. It's so damn expensive! I'm so on the fence about it. I just keep thinking of all the unreleased goodies inside. It sounds pretty amazing. Then there's the cost...
This was so freaking rad! I love love it! Hi Emma! You are hilarious! Keep busting yr old man's chops! Ahahahahahahahahahahaha! Good picks, guys! I know nothing of Amin Tobin....
@TheGrecianThunder - I'm definitely going to show her your comment, Andreas. That kid gives me a run for my money, most of the time, but I love her for it. I also love that she's not into Beiber or Gaga!
Check out my reply to David (seqouiaflame) for some initial comments about Amon Tobin's ISAM. Don't know if it's up your alley but I'd be happy to tell you more if you were interested.
I haven't heard some of that stuff. Very informative. What a lucky kid to grow up with all that good music around. I really need to hear that new Peter Gabriel record. I have to put Fleet Foxes' Helplessness Blues on my list, but hey, I never responded to the thread. Good stuff Rob!
@TheZeekgeek1 - You know, I bought Fleet Foxes debut, which also came with their Sun Giant EP, and really loved it at first. (Loved the artwork, too.) Then I noticed that I just never pulled it out to play after a while. It just didn't interest me any longer, and I don't honestly know why. That lack of interest, though, kept me from ever buying Helplessness Blues. Those of you who have it really love it, so it's got to be good. I don't know what I'm not getting with their music.
If I could only get my 4 year old to help me make a video. Nice picks. Some I hadn't heard of before. Amon Tobin played Decibel Fest last fall here in Seattle. Didn't go but I read that it was a big WOW of a show.
@ballroom23 - Emma had no interest in stuff like this at 4. It's really only been in the past few years that she's wanted to do these things with me.
I saw Tobin in Chicago last year and it blew me away. I posted a video with various clips from the show, but Ninja Tune decided to give me my first copyright strike for putting it up. Quite nice of them, eh? There are other vids of the show on YouTube, though. Don't know why they picked on mine. Amazing show, regardless!
@seqouiaflame - Thanks David, and thanks for watching. There has already been a little bit of boy talk around the house and she's only 11. I'm not ready for it! (I haven't purchased a shotgun yet - Ha!)
If you have any inclination toward electronic music that is more experimental than dance-y, definitely check out Amon Tobin. There isn't really anything there that would even get your toes tapping, yet it's one seriously major head trip. Like nothing you've ever heard.
I am going to say "Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel" before I even hear your choices.
Bingo, I nailed the first one. Loved Emma's reaction on Tom Wait's looks. Yuck, me too Emma. I love Guy Garvey's voice. I have been meaning to get that Elbow LP too. I heard them first from the movie Trainspotting. There is my second guess. New Blood is growING on me. I love the looks of that 7" single. "Vegetable-ee".
I remember your video clips on the Amon Tobin show.
@Paneeks1960 - Hi Rob! Ha, either my tastes are predictable or you know me well. That new Peter Gabriel album is fantastic. I don't know if I love it so much because I saw him on tour for that, but it continues to amaze me. That cool little 7" was a really nice touch, too. So glad to hear that you're into Elbow! Definitely one of my most favorite bands of the past 10+ years.
@EoLoVoX Your picks definitely quite the opposite of predictable. I would say that all of them were extremely unique. It was top 11 list from a very polished music listener. I just wanted to tell you that the guess on the Gabriel and Kate Bush LP's was from me getting to know you better. How could you leave those two albums out right?
Good talking to you Rob. Don't be a stranger because I miss your posts.
@Paneeks1960 - Thanks Rob. It's good talking to you, too. It feels good to jump back in here with you folks when I get a chance. I guess the KB and PG albums were sort of "givens" for me, weren't they! They definitely lived up to my expectations, and my expectations were pretty high.
I don't plan to be a stranger. I'm in this for the long haul! I just may have periods where I'm much less active. It's a shame we can't all be subsidized for sharing good music with the world, y'know?

@BohemianConspiracy - You know, I'm with you on that. I was blown away by Adele's voice when 19 came out, but the hype and popularity that followed the release of 21 was just overwhelming. Yes, she has an amazing voice and, in general, I like the songs she writes. When you hear her songs almost everywhere you go, though, it has a way of burning you out. "Overexposure" and "overdose" are very good way to put it.

I didn't expect your top album to be Amon Tobin, that was a surprise!
sonicmainliner 1 month ago

Cimbarius 1 month ago
@Cimbarius - Amen! ...to all that!
I love the instrumental versions on the second disc of the New Blood CD. The orchestra does such an incredible job that it's well worth focusing on that alone at times. I picked up the New Blood: Live In London DVD, too, but I haven't found the time to sit down and watch it yet.
Did you catch this tour?
EoLoVoX 1 month ago
@EoLoVoX yes i had the opportunity to see the "New Blood"-show live, which was fantastic. He performed the whole "Scratch my Back"-album on the 1st half of the show. His vocal performance was great. I like the cover and art work of the "New Blood"-DVD. Great job by the camera men. Especially the live version of orchestral "Darkness" on this DVD sounds amazing.
Cimbarius 1 month ago
@Cimbarius - When I saw him in Milwaukee, he did a couple songs from 'Scratch My Back' and then it was into the 'New Blood' material. I think they may have been trying to time things so as not to compete with the Summerfest fireworks show. They used the fireworks as an intermission. No complaints, though. It was a fantastic show! Better than I thought it would be. I've been a PG fan for a long time and he just gets better and better!
Where did you see the show?

Some good picks there guys, glad you didn't go down the "i will show this to look cool" route. Nice to see Admiral Fallow, not many people here have heard of them!
If my son thinks something like Bright Eyes is his favourite album at the age of eleven, I will consider it "job done". I can't wait to start sharing music with him.
DocStrangelyStrange 1 month ago
@DocStrangelyStrange - Thanks Kevin. I'm glad you know of Admiral Fallow. I just love their music! Since they're Scottish, if you ever hear of a vinyl release from them, PLEASE let me know!
I know your son is going to have great taste in music. I mean, how could he not?!

Decemberists over Adele any day, sorry mate. Great video mind. Its funny how your daughter can't keep still in the videos, my Daughter is the exact same - with or without sugar ;)
vinylated 1 month ago
@vinylated - Sorry? Decemberists were definitely higher ranked than Adele for me! (...#4 in this video) In fact, Adele probably wouldn't even have made the list if my wife and daughter had not been so obsessed with her record.
I know what you mean about sitting still. Must be a kid thing. No sugar necessary!

What was the music in the background ? "Sounds of Silence" ? Record companies are gonna be mad at you Rob !
frankrideau 1 month ago
@frankrideau - The main reason for that bit at the start was that I got my first and only copyright strike with a video that I made from clips at an Amon Tobin show last year. I was going to play short clips of the music that we were showing here, but I figured that there would be several records companies that would have a problem with it. The stupid thing is that this sort of exposure only encourages people to explore more of what they hear and like. Copyright laws frustrate me.

the dynamic duo is at it again! great video, and great choices. woo hoo tom waits made the list, as did amon tobin! did you hear about that tobin box set coming out this year?
babylonseeker 1 month ago

TheZeekgeek1 1 month ago

Didn't go but I read that it was a big WOW of a show.
ballroom23 1 month ago
@ballroom23 - Emma had no interest in stuff like this at 4. It's really only been in the past few years that she's wanted to do these things with me.
I saw Tobin in Chicago last year and it blew me away. I posted a video with various clips from the show, but Ninja Tune decided to give me my first copyright strike for putting it up. Quite nice of them, eh? There are other vids of the show on YouTube, though. Don't know why they picked on mine. Amazing show, regardless!

Killer picks! Emma is so damn cute man! Keep them boys away! I will have to check out that Amon Tobin. Thanks Rob!
seqouiaflame 1 month ago

Thanks Rob, thanks Emma~

@Paneeks1960 - Hi Rob! Ha, either my tastes are predictable or you know me well. That new Peter Gabriel album is fantastic. I don't know if I love it so much because I saw him on tour for that, but it continues to amaze me. That cool little 7" was a really nice touch, too. So glad to hear that you're into Elbow! Definitely one of my most favorite bands of the past 10+ years.
Always so good to hear from you, my friend.

Hope work and everything else is going good~

@Paneeks1960 - Thanks Rob. It's good talking to you, too. It feels good to jump back in here with you folks when I get a chance. I guess the KB and PG albums were sort of "givens" for me, weren't they! They definitely lived up to my expectations, and my expectations were pretty high.
I don't plan to be a stranger. I'm in this for the long haul! I just may have periods where I'm much less active. It's a shame we can't all be subsidized for sharing good music with the world, y'know?
