After spending hours watching videos and studying sketches on how to make the triangles, tying and untying and I couldn't figure it out.....THEN I saw this video and realized all the other sucky videos are lame and did not explain the pulling and popping of the strings in order to create a triangle. The knots do hold themselves without a vise grip once the slack pulls out. You can also use a stick or a small metal rod as a puller instead of buying a puller.
you should start over by tightening the verticals first... you already have 3 full circles of horizontals ... witch means the verticals are too loose ....
your mp they make congas there is a jemby but it sounds like more like a conga and its hevy to carry monton rethom make a good wood jemby and there made in canada they have a rope thing like yours but they have these plastic things witch you flip to tune it chech there site out my be you can make something for yours be easer to tune it up or down
OK, I finally got it. Thanks, this was the best demonstration I've seen. I thought I needed a new skin... it just needed tuning...I didn't quite get it until I saw your instuctions. The 'experts' trying to demonstrate this do not clearly show the knot-tying technique, you nailed it. My new (used) 13" djembe sounds terrific now. Anyone attempting to do this should already know about all of the things you didn't cover so ignore the know-it-all critics. And you play well, too.
I started with a Djembe like that :P. it was sh... crap. I did not like the sound, it was MP (not the best quality). I paid way too much for it and over tightened it and popped the head trying to get rid of the nasty ringing sound. Thicker skin (proper goat) helped but yeah. Handy for people who have no desire to weave the ropes to tighten. This video is lacking some important stuff like how to get started and to go low as possible to get maximum tightness out of the rope you have to play with.
chill out and appreciate this lesson... THanks i will attempt it now. i been playing for a few years now abd bought a few drums and they are all ut of tune
darmana is absolutely correct...the self locking weave is far more efficient...(and there is no need for the vicegrip 'thingy'...)drumskull drums sells a cleat under the name:CLAM CLEAT POWER GRIP...the two handed version is about $26...I'm a drum builder and I use it quite often...quality product
the reason she has to use the vise grips is because she is weaving incorrectly. If you go over, over, under both the knot will lock into place. I believe the hand tool she is using is called a cleat. the cleat is also used for sailing. I hope this helps.
good but the vise grips thingy causes the rope to shred after constant tuning and makes rope replacement needed more often...you need to be able to hold the rope tight while weaving unless you like replacing rope....
She is using the one hand version of the 'clam cleat power grip'...I personally use the two handed version...it works much better when you're pulling high tension diamonds...Drumskull Drums carries them

any knot created should hold by itself... u shouldnt have to "block"
yeah u should check the "verticals" first !!!

Thanks! The only clear demonstration I've found on youtube. You explain well and have the lighting so we can actually see what you're doing.

Agreed, great video. I'd also like to know the names of those tools - my djembe skin is also not so tight.
