  • It's nice to hear it differently. The original is transcendent, though—the passion and feeling just tears through you. I don't know another song like it.

  • I was at this performance, and although his voice, and style is different than on the Rain Dogs LP, it is absolutely his "real" singing voice. He has honed and crafted his sound for over 30 years, in interviews he has made it clear that he sees his voice as another "instrument" at his disposal, with which he brings the tone necessary to fulfill his vision of what ever song he is singing. They guy is amazing, and it was an amazing show. I hope he does a tour for his new album!

  • so where is the video

  • If you don't feel the pain of every one of your brothers and sisters echoed in this mans music . . . . . .then you just don't feel.

  • Amazing version.

  • Wow, I saw him on that tour, he is so awesome live!!! I love him so much I will go anywhere to see him again!!

  • Tom Waits without his "drunk voice" and his original arrangements is a quasi-normal American songwriter. His early stuff is not bad at all, but it's not still TOM WAITS. The later stuff, on the contrary, is "too Tom Waits". He uses too much the cliches (arrangement, voice, etc) that made him original. God bless him and his music, anyway :)

  • @MrAndreaCaso All of it is Tom Waits, nutcase.

  • Awesome! ThnXXX for posting!

  • One of the things I love about Waits is that no matter how long you've been listening to him, how many of his albums you have, how much of his stuff you know, he still has that ability to surprise you and throw up something new you've never heard or seen before. That's proper originality.

  • omg... this is magical.. it gives me shivers down my spine

  • likely it's luthier's work, or some custom.

  • Could someone please tell me what guitar it is on the picture at 2:18 ?

    thanks

  • It's most likely a custom. He started playing with it around the time Real Gone came out, I think. He used to have a Guild during the Mule Variation days, but this is definitely not it. He's got a bunch of hard to identify guitars but they all have beautiful tone.

  • @Stereojulle

    I think it's a Gibson L1, L2 or L3. Just google them. Beautiful guitars

  • studio version is better. better melody in studio version

  • God bless you m8...

  • bonito pra caralho! comovente, real , humano, musical, suja e gloriosamente Mr Tom Waits mais uma vez diz ao que veio. Genio. É bom saber que a turnê de 2008 foi boa assim.

  • Im bawling guys ! :'(

  • really?????????!??

  • Fuck her. If she'd maintained the earthiness of Tom Waits (Which isn't hard to do; at least use some natural instruments! None o' this electric ) she'd be decent but she makes it all poppy and it's not even him then.

  • Scarlett cannot sing. That kind of gets in the way.

  • I'm sure a bunch of people wouldn't call this singing either...

  • @inspireradavstatyer Well they'd be wrong, wouldn't they?

  • Absolutely, as well as those who says Scarlett can't sing are wrong.

  • Fuck off with this "hey, to each his own, nobody's right, nobody's wrong" bullshit. It's so very pointless.

  • @buckleygeneration

    arguing on youtube

    use of the word pointless

    hilarious

  • @magicalbilly No, hilarious is commenting on this when it's six months in the past, and expecting me to give a shit.

  • @buckleygeneration for someone not giving a shit you sure replied quick.

do your self a favor and try ACTUALLY not giving a shit and not replying

it makes you look like a douche

  • @magicalbilly My youtube settings make it so that I receive an email whenever someone replies to one of my comment. I figured, no reason to beat around the bush, and just answer straight away. But fine, if you want me to prove just how little I give a shit, I can just go ahead and not reply anymore. Hope I make you happy. And don't call me a douche for something so insignificant. It just makes you look like a douche.

  • @buckleygeneration wow...

    really, wow.

you just have no sense of irony here.

  • @magicalbilly Don't care. Go argue with someone who does.

  • @buckleygeneration i'm going to do you a favor and stop replying.

becuase you dont seem to know how.

good job on not caring there, you totally managed, I'm proud son.

  • @magicalbilly Replying, not replying, makes no difference to me. You don't hurt me by pointing out that I seem to care more than I claim to. I'm not a five-year-old. I can handle being inconsistent without having to defend it. I care, but I also don't. It's just funny how you start this argument over me arguing on youtube to begin with. Just leave it. Go live your life, or something.

  • @buckleygeneration ok i lied.

i just need to tell you that you're FASCINATING.

  • @magicalbilly That's good. I don't care. Kisses.

  • @inspireradavstatyer Scarlet can't sing.

  • Then a bunch of people can go fuck themselves

  • Cant we all just.. get along?

  • yes please (:

  • i prefer the rain dogs version but anyhting by tom waits is great.

  • there is a much better version of this song, 1989 in Hamburg.....had it on tape..lost it, what a pitty..god bless you waits

  • Comment removed

  • It's got this really unique character to it... not to mention even though he sounds "drunken" he still has amazing control over his vocal abilities... I mean you can tell its not his real singing voice, but at the same time you can tell he actually HAS a singing voice...

  • @redpheonix06 Listen to his early recordings, he doesn't have his "growl" yet and its really good. Some of my favorite Waits stuff is from Heart of Saturday Night album

  • its the flaws that makes it flawless

  • He is meant to sound like a drunken sailor.

  • lol is he*?

  • I think he's meant to sound as tom waits. If people don't like it, that's fine. And if drunken sailor is the feeling he has given to liamseeland, then he's probably satisfied with that

  • AND this is the song I'm having at my funeral. It's so great I can't believe I'm privileged to listen to it. I love Tom.

  • That's so strange! This is the song I'M having ag MY funeral!

  • Okay, this is really weird... I made my friends promise that they'd have a chorus of fat black women singing this at MY funeral...

  • I'm planning on it, too... I want a whole jazz funeral - part the conclusion of rain dogs part last scene of imitation of life... just saying!

  • You guys should watch the Douglas Sirk film...Imitation of Life.

  • Not Green Grass? oh man I would sob at my own funeral if either of those songs played.... probably moreso this song.... It's probably the most beautiful peice of art I have ever come across.. It's ridiculous.

  • give it a chance liamseeland, clearly you arn't too familiar with Tom Waits. Were you expecting closing time?

  • it was try the early albums 70's..i think thats why he changed his musical style..to fit in with his rougher voice..that feeling song with keith richards is fantastic.

  • wow he's singing it in a much lower key! Is his range just (even more ridiculously) lower than it used to be? Also, who's playing the little soul guitar fills in the background? They're great.

  • is this going to be realeased as a CD or has it already

  • thanks for this

  • Drink Heavily, Jim

  • Thanks for posting these. Beautiful song. That's a pretty sweet shot of him with the guitar as well!
