It's nice to hear it differently. The original is transcendent, though—the passion and feeling just tears through you. I don't know another song like it.
I was at this performance, and although his voice, and style is different than on the Rain Dogs LP, it is absolutely his "real" singing voice. He has honed and crafted his sound for over 30 years, in interviews he has made it clear that he sees his voice as another "instrument" at his disposal, with which he brings the tone necessary to fulfill his vision of what ever song he is singing. They guy is amazing, and it was an amazing show. I hope he does a tour for his new album!
Tom Waits without his "drunk voice" and his original arrangements is a quasi-normal American songwriter. His early stuff is not bad at all, but it's not yet TOM WAITS. The later stuff, on the contrary, is "too Tom Waits". He uses too much the cliches (arrangement, voice, etc) that made him original. God bless him and his music, anyway :)
Tom Waits without his "drunk voice" and his original arrangements is a quasi-normal American songwriter. His early stuff is not bad at all, but it's not still TOM WAITS. One of the things I love about Waits is that no matter how long you've been listening to him, how many of his albums you have, how much of his stuff you know, he still has that ability to surprise you and throw up something new you've never heard or seen before. That's proper originality.
It's most likely a custom. He started playing with it around the time Real Gone came out, I think. He used to have a Guild during the Mule Variation days, but this is definitely not it. He's got a bunch of hard to identify guitars but they all have beautiful tone.
bonito pra caralho! comovente, real , humano, musical, suja e gloriosamente Mr Tom Waits mais uma vez diz ao que veio. Genio. É bom saber que a turnê de 2008 foi boa assim.
Fuck her. If she'd maintained the earthiness of Tom Waits (Which isn't hard to do; at least use some natural instruments! None o' this electric ) she'd be decent but she makes it all poppy and it's not even him then.
@magicalbilly My youtube settings make it so that I receive an email whenever someone replies to one of my comment. I figured, no reason to beat around the bush, and just answer straight away. But fine, if you want me to prove just how little I give a shit, I can just go ahead and not reply anymore. Hope I make you happy. And don't call me a douche for something so insignificant. It just makes you look like a douche.
@magicalbilly Replying, not replying, makes no difference to me. You don't hurt me by pointing out that I seem to care more than I claim to. I'm not a five-year-old. I can handle being inconsistent without having to defend it. I care, but I also don't. It's just funny how you start this argument over me arguing on youtube to begin with. Just leave it. Go live your life, or something.
It's got this really unique character to it... not to mention even though he sounds "drunken" he still has amazing control over his vocal abilities... I mean you can tell its not his real singing voice, but at the same time you can tell he actually HAS a singing voice...
@redpheonix06 Listen to his early recordings, he doesn't have his "growl" yet and its really good. Some of my favorite Waits stuff is from Heart of Saturday Night album
I think he's meant to sound as tom waits. If people don't like it, that's fine. And if drunken sailor is the feeling he has given to liamseeland, then he's probably satisfied with that
Not Green Grass? oh man I would sob at my own funeral if either of those songs played.... probably moreso this song.... It's probably the most beautiful peice of art I have ever come across.. It's ridiculous.

The thing that pisses me off is that his voice is normal, so he's intentionally trying to sound like a half retarded Louis Armstrong that's been smoking since he was 3.
it was try the early albums 70's..i think thats why he changed his musical style..to fit in with his rougher voice..that feeling song with keith richards is fantastic.
wow he's singing it in a much lower key! Is his range just (even more ridiculously) lower than it used to be? Also, who's playing the little soul guitar fills in the background? They're great.
