The music's inner meaning that is portrayed through the actual tune can only really be accomplished by absolutely brilliant artists who feel a deep connection with their art, and I don't see many of them anymore. Besides, through words someone can really get something across to you; it's one of the ways you can really connect with the audience and display what you wanted to portray.
