Actually in the comics the Surfer led Galactus to any planet that had life or not. After his mind was wiped he didn't remember his plans. There is one episode where he is attacked by his guilt over all the lives that he led Galactus to destroy. I don't know why they changed it. Never change the original lore!

The trouble is he never wanted the hunger, but it grew and grew until he was consumed by it.
