one of the best things to do to "winterize" your car or truck is getting snow tires, something that has the mountain/snowflake symbol on it. M+S isn't good enough.
of course, for those emergency conditions, carry a set of chains/cables/textile traction devices
I like to use 'oil dry' for weight. It is the same stuff as kitty litter but much cheaper and in larger bags. You can get it at Lowe's and probably other hardware stores. You can also use it to throw on the roadway to gain traction if you get stuck.
Be careful when adding weight to the rear of the vehicle to gain traction because of risk of injury. In a collision the ballast (heavy stuff) can come forward and injure the people riding in the vehicle. Try to get some straps and secure whatever you are using.
