The problem, I think, is that Gould got blasted by the archelogical community for his liberal creation of monstosities by putting together the fossils in quirky, though not neseacrily correct, ways.
The explanation for the cambrian explosion, I personally believe, lies in the creation of species that were capable of leaving traces. So these are not the first animals, but rather the first ones with bodies made of sufficently complex materials/mobile lifestyle to leave traces.
I would imagine prior to the cambrian a great extinction took place and killed off the more primitive critters, leaving only those quick enough and with sufficent complexity to stave off long enough to live.
I would like to know how the lungfish fits in with the idea of limbs before lungs
