What are formalities between you and me, Tirupathi VenkataramaNa|
Listen oh Saviour, wasn't Dhruva a young little lad?
Ajamila who got your boon obtained mukti (liberation), is he your sister's son?
Did king elephant (Gajendra) send you a request letter with his thumb impression?
For someone (Sudhama)who brought you old, petrified beaten rice (avalakki) you gave an acceptable boon! Vittala sleeping on the snake, please keep your promise
This is a wonderful composition by Purandara daasa. Here Pt. Havaldar sings this passionate questioning of the Lord followed by compassionate cry to the Lord to save him. Many people of Karnataka and Andhra know that Purandara Dasa went to Tirupathi and met the great composer Annammacharya. Following this meeting of two of the greatest composers of that time, comes his honest, straight from the heart dialog with the Lord. The deeper meaning is for all to ponder, above is a simple translation.
