wild, I used to listen to Rush, Yes, Kansas, etc... Now into more underground music like Opeth and Dream Theater, but man did I love these guys in the '80s!!! I miss music television that played music videos!
Sigh... was glued to MTV for hours on hours back in the early 80s when ALL they showed was music videos and concerts........... that's all! Music Television! and Now?
Media Television....the home of Reality Shows! grr...
I love the FIXX even saw them in the 90's they are as good as can be! They should have been alot more appreciated for their creativity and skills. So many great bands of the late 70's and early 80's. I am blessed to be in college at that time enjoying every note!
A friend of mine won this LP, Phantoms, in a high school drawing and we listened to it a lot. This song will always remind me of those Friday afternoons after school where you had no real responsibilities and the whole weekend in front of you. Good times.
As of 10/14/11, one person was not his or her self.
Some day people will look back on cell phones and say ( WTF ) did they use, what a joke. This video is a snapshot of the ever evolving American experience.
Are you guys sure that is a telephone, antenna length and given technology of the time lends me to believe it is a CB radio, something kids don't play with anymore I guess. Cellular phones use microwave and that long antenna is clearly not meant for microwave frequencies. What cell phone has anyone ever saw that had a 2 ft. antenna.
Aye, i'd have to agree. I'm not sure it's a cell-phone either. It looks like a what i'd call a 'walkie-talkie' from my childhood. Reminds me of the type you'd see the army use during that period of time [late 70's early 80's].
It's not a cell phone. I've seen the cell phones that were available in 1984. They were the size of a brief case, so that ain't no cell phone Cy is "singing" into. And yeah, I think it looks more like the kind of walkie talkie that would have been used by a military unit.
@Kohntarkosz Yes, it is a cell phone. I lived during that time. And that is a circa 1980's cell phone. Watch the movie "Wall Street" with Michael Douglass, the one that came out in the 80's, he's holding one on the beach. In the new Wall Street movie, when he is released from prison, they give him back that phone and the guards joke about it. There were also "bag phones" which u are refering to. But the rich could only afford those he is holding...
@PlanTonto I love when this video came out and we all thought man only rock stars or really rich people have cell phones. Wow. It was so cool back 25 years or so ago. It looks hokey now but we watched this video and thought it was soooooo coool. Love the song.
Just think....that "brick" phone that Cy is holding was truly state of the art, back in 1984. In fact, outside of the military, you couldn't even get you hands on anything like it at all, until about 1987 or so....
GaGa = Wannabe talented. Feeds on her crappy shock factor and uses it to cover up the fact that she is crap
The Fixx - Very talented! Pioneers of New Wave who used intelligent, thought-provoking lyrics to push others into looking at the world in a different way.
This video cracks me up. I like the beginning when the guys all fan out in the field. Imagine what the storyboard looked like when mapping out this video. That said, love the Fixx and love this song.
LOL Check out the huge cell phone at the first of the video! The first one I got was in a freaking leather bag! hahaha I'm still waiting for my jetpack and shoe-cell phone like agent 99 had. heehee.
I feel like I'm seven again hearing this...It was one of those works that faded from my memory over the years, but I used to love this song! Now the fire of an old favorite has been rekindled.
To the younger people watching this video: Yes, that's a cellphone he's holding. They were more expensive than the most expensive iPhone today. Ordinary people did not have them, only the wealthy. My, we've come a long way. If only we could cure cancer.
The 80's...gay? Your kidding right. The 80's produced the most innovative music this worlds ever seen......and The Fixx were/are amongst those innovators. I can't think of 1 single band today that can stack up to the talent of these guy's. Today's "music" (it pains me to call it music) is nothing but highly produced noise, and that's insulting to noise!
If Gaga, Miley, etc. had just 1/10 the talent of the Fixx then I'd rejoice with hope for humanity and civilization!
@n8tureboy I agree with most of what you say, except for Lady GaGa. She uses synthesizer in "Poker Face", which was an instrument used by alot of 80's bands. I think she's influenced by the 80's so I respect her alot.
@binka21 Lady GaGa actually SAYS she is influenced by the 80s (and listen to "Alejandro" and then "Brother Louie - also on YouTube - as the songs are VERY VERY similar).
Synthesizers have come a long way in the 60 yrs they've been around. First, they were used for "special effects", then they were used to IMITATE acoustic instruments, then they were used to simulate "futuristic instruments that don't exist yet" and now they are used as themselves...
@bassmanjoe That was kind of my point, that even SHE says she was influenced {I'd say she often copies 80s songs note by note] by 80s music. (I prefer the Fixx, too, though a song from the 80s isn't AUTOMATICALLY better than a song from today, nor is a song from today AUTOMATICALLY worse than a song from the 80s. Cases in point: "Sister Christian" or "We Built This City" vs "Love Like Woe" or "Airplanes"...
Oh, My Goodness! Can you believe that someone even mentioned that abomination 'Gagme' in a Fixx Thread?
I'd thought that I'd seen it all by now! The sooner that flash-in-the-pan 'Gagme' disintegrates back into the primordial ooze from which she came, the better off we'll all be! 10-4?
