With the way Gene was trying to say Harvey's name, it was like the difficulty people were having in saying his character's name right from a certain Mel Brooks movie, Heddy Lamarr.
I remember as a teen when Bert referred to Gene as the "idiot" over his shoulder. But now that I'm going into motion pictures, I'd say Gene did very well subbing for Bert in this show.
This is the coolest thing I've ever seen. Wonder what it would've been like if, say, Bob Barker switched roles with Gene Rayburn and hosted a "Match Game" episode? If this DID happen, please reply to my post! Thanks!!
Bob Barker never guest-hosted Match Game to my knowledge, but there was a week where Bert Convy hosted it and Gene had done likewise with TattleTales.Perhaps this was one of them.
If FreMantle Media or Sony Pictures TV decided to bring back Tattletales, who do you think should be the perfect host? My ideal hosts are Ricki Lake, Patrick Duffy, and Tom Bergeron.
Ricki lake proved her game show hosting worth doing Game Show Marathon; and Tom Bergeron, with his ability to do well on Hollywood Squares would also be a good choice; Patrick Duffy did wonderfully on Bingo America, too, but I would lean either towards Ricki or Tom.
I watched this show every weekday afternoon at my babysitter's house when I was 3 and 4. I had no idea what was going on, but I was really tripped out by how there were people on T.V... on T.V... and talking to the people who were just on T.V. That was about the full extent of what I understood, and it never ceased to amaze me.
And Tattletales could help speed up that natural (or is it unnatural?) cycle. I'm not a tabloid kind of guy, but I'm dying to know what otherworldly force is keeping Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes together.
How did the money get paid to the audience? Looks like about 50 people in each of 3 sections. Does each person get the amount of their couple? Or is it split between the 50 in the group? If not split, people in the losing sections would get about $150 and the winning section would get about $1200 each for a total payout of about $75,000. If split, then each losing person would get about $3 and winning section about $24 for a total payout of about $1500. I am guessing it's the $1500 total.
They actually had a check-writing machine in the studio and issued a check to each person in the audience as they left.
That's why the couples CHANGED sections every day, so that if one couple was any better or worse, the money had a better chance of being evenly divided.
The same audience was used for all five shows in a given week, so the payoff wasn't bad, but you'd never get rich.
In case anyone doesn't know, the announcer is Jack Clark, who was also doing "Split Second" at the time. He would later go on to host "The Cross-Wits" and announce "Wheel of Fortune." Yes, THAT "Wheel of Fortune."
Gene Wood was the announcer for most of the 74-78 run of Tattletales and then Johnny Olsen for the second run from 82 to 84. Wood was also the announcer of the ABC version of Password (1971-75) at that time and Olsen was on The Price is Right and Match Game '74. Back then CBS ran TPIR at 2 p.m., Match Game at 2:30 p.m. and Tattletales at 3 p.m. in the central time zone.
For those who don't know this, Gene Rayburn actually hosted the pilot for this show, at the time called "Celebrity Matchmates". When the show was ready to air, "Match Game" was already on the air, so they brought in Bert Convy and the rest is history.
Just did some checking on IMDB -- all three celebrity couples ultimately divorced from each other. Harvey Korman and Donna Ehlert divorced the same year of this show (1974). Wonder if the friction is evident in their performance here?
Hey, I had a crush on Gene too when I was 12. I thought I was the only one because everyone else thought that was wierd. (I guess they thought it would be more appropriate to have crushes on jerks like Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise.) I do agree that Gene was extremely sweet. There wasn't (and still isn't) anyone like him.
OHHH Gene Rayburn was so CUTE ,and I did have crush on him when I was a teenager . It doesn't seem possible that Gene is gone , because it seemed like that he was here yesturday . Gene Rayburn was such a sweetheart . ( BIG GRIN )
What was the taping date of this episode. I believe that Joanne and Roger weren't married until 1975.

actually, that was John Harlan who was the announcer of Password 1971-75 on ABC.
Jack Clark would also sometimes return to announce Tattletales and host Cross-Wits post-1974.

Bob Barker
Bobby Van
Jack Narz
Donald Ross
Richard Dawson
