Are the little red glows on the hulls hull hits? If they are, perhaps make them flash bright white and fade to the red?
Also, maybe make the shield animation a bit faster. I feel that the effect is too long and people may be confused if two consecutive hits are made and they can't distinguish between them.

I guess each ship's shield appears when the ship is fired upon? Do different parts of the shields glow brighter if they are the focus of enemy fire?
