Stalin did starve Ukraine but in doing so he was able to feed and get the funds from the grain for rebulding the Red Army which had been devastated by Civil War and World War I (as Russia). Stalin did purge the country but it was necessary at the time. Communists such as Leninists, Trotskyists and Stalinists were divided and Stalin had to create unity in the country. What if Hitler invaded when the USSR had a weak army and was politically divided?
