Rap Song Recording Tips : Recording a Rap Song: Adlibbing Vocals

When I'm recording I refer to these as 'Hype' tracks. Like he says, giving dynamic to certain words or phrases. Adlibs for me usually consist of using different words or even vocally imitating sounds of things like a camera, for instance, if I'm talking about taking pictures or being in pictures or something. these kinds of things help paint the mental image of what you are trying to express.

hey, i have a question, how do you record your voice so it sounds quality, so that there is no static behind your voice recording, i use audacity for the recording but i dont know how to make my voice clear?

@holow Audacity is really cheap so your not going to get good quality using that software... get protools its the best software

@holow Currently, it's about 500 or 600 for Pro Tools 9. I suggest putting the money out for it, it's a wonderful program, great for any style of music. I mainly use it in a hard rock/metal context, but it's easy to create beats with the plug-ins it comes with.

Is it a hard program to learn? Not really. The thing about it though, is that it gives you about 4 different ways to do the same thing, for pretty much everything, and while it isn't hard to learn to use it, it IS time consuming to find

Awesome tip about getting the 3-4 doubles rather than just 2 and counting on those to be good.

Btw, I thought they were called "doubles". Adlib means off-the-cuff, or on-the-spot comments; remarks you make off the top of your head.

Traditionally 'ad libbing' is the same as improvisation, for example a rap freestyle could be considered ad libbing, as could spontaneous occasional exclamations like "yeah" during a song. I didn't think the term could be applied to vocal stacking on certain words for emphasis, as this gentleman says. Regardless, this method seems to imbue your delivery with additional power, and your voice sounds less plain and solitary, so it's a good recommendation by Frederick :).

yea Mac Dre was the best ad libber ive herd all of the time he would delay his addlibs and put more emphasis on them kinda like he was just taking or having a conversation like he would say something like "The bitch asked me to come grocery shop" then he would say " grocery shop??" in a way that was like sayin "Come on bitch u know i dont grocery shop"... now pretty much ever Bay Area rapper and mos Hyphy songs do addlibs like that but are nowhere near as good as Mac Dre

No its not.... Ad libbing is not even close to a rap freestyle. Are you a rapper? Frederick sounds like an ignorant white dude name. Freestyle rapping is words and rhymes right off the top of ones head. Ad libbing is just adding some extra punch, or making already recorded words stand out a little more. Not even close to free styling.
