Needless to say, this help the Allies more than it did the Germans. One wonders what would've happened if Hitler (or more precisely, Goering) had ordered the air crews to be trained in ship recognition. Hmmm, too simple and smart of a decision.
Funny, I learned something new. I can imagine this is the way it went, after all the nazis believed the Luftwaffe to crush the RAF. And Hitler often thought he was smart although often his orders undermined and contradicted chosen strategies. I assume the men of the Kriegsmarine weren't too happy about it.
After all they got rid of the yellow/black stripes and the false wave effects at the stern and bow to make the Bismarck look more like a ship of the Royal Navy.
Most people do not understand about WHY the Kriegsmarine had the swastika painted on their forecastles and fantails. During 1940, an inexperience Luftwaffle pilot made a bombing run on two German destroyers, both ships were lost due to the bombs and the minefield they were maneuvering in. When hearing what happened, Hitler, without bothering to ask who/what/when/where/why, ordered all of the German warships to paint the swastika on the bow and stern for air identification. (cont)
@tolsatha actually the first battle was the bismarck and prinz eugen vs prince of whales and the hood the prinz of eugen left to get repairs and bismark was attacked
Bismarck and Prinz Eugen were spotted by a british recon plane, and was soon attacked by The Hood and 6 other ships. The Hood was a british flagship and was considered unsinkable. It sunk after only 5 shots. Then, the two ships began their way to a port in France, but they were cought by british bombers, and one of them hit Bismarcks rudder, jamming it. The ships persuing him cought up, and when the crew saw it cant do anything, they blew their own ship up. End of story, hope it helps.

Acctually, you'll find any where that you are correct about everything except that it was sunk, it was in fact scuddled by its own crew, I know this because I have just got done a debate about it with some freinds when I had to look it up to prove I was right

@carlosmurphy4u: speed is a sticky theme with model ships, especially at small scales. Even though the "ship" is smaller, TIME and WATER are still original. If it is travelling the "scale" distance in a given time, it won't make a decent wave. If it's running fast enough to make one, it's travelling its length in a second. Thus, a small-scale model-ship will never look exactly right.
@legoskills1: why don't you stick with your Legos? ;-)
@KiznerVogner: check your number before you post rubbish. Steve Irwin - "Crikey! Here we are gettin' a rare glimpse of a family of Bismarcks in in the wild. Notice how the the mother teaches her young how to hunt......"
That's true. But still does not comply with this ship model with the facts. The flag of Germany has only existed since 1949. The German Empire existed until 1945. In 1941, the Bismarck was destroyed. It must, therefore, the swastika flag on the ship or at least the flag of the German Reich.
Please excuse my English, I come from Germany. I Translated into Google.
Bismark was technically a great piece of engineering but The German navy was not an integrated and balanced fleet. Which is why an obsolete biplane managed to get a hit which resulted in her ultimate destruction. Much the same would probably have happened to the Russian Red banner fleet had it ever sortied into the North Atlantic to take on Nato
the biplane torpedo hit was a pure fluke... Bismarck was almost within range of luftwaffe when it hit..
Of course german navy was dwarfed by royal navy... after all german lost the first world war and had very limited time building up a navy...
But that doesnt change the fact that Bismarck was a much better ship than everything the british had at the moment.. and ALL the other participants in the war for that matter.. bismarcks problem was of course that she was quite alone.... hehe
By the way.. im happy with the way the war ended.. but i cant help being pretty impressed by how superior the germans was in EVERY weaponsbranch.. except heavy bombers which they didnt have.. compared to ALL the other participants in the war..
In my view Germany lost the war because of two things. Lack of ressources and an utterly stupid fuhrer who made a neverending series of bad decissions strategicly...
@thales30 im with you there. hitler was crazy. he actualy dreamed of taking over the world. HA id eat new york stadium if ANY country could conquer the world
@thales30 the iowa is. but don't get me wrong the bismark was a GREAT battleship. would you like if an iowa-class and a bismark clasS(only two were made: the bismark and the turpitz) cane face to face. woudl that be epic?
The Bismarck was a battleship, not an aircraft carrier and, on her final dash for Brest, the British navy caught up with her outside the range of Luftwaffe air cover. A lucky hit by a Swordfish torpedo had disabled her rudder and steering mechanism so, in reality, she was a sitting duck. A sitting duck with a LOT of firepower granted but the Brits had too many ships bearing down upon her for there to be any doubt about the eventual outcome.
If you want to be technical, almost the entire crew on board the bismark was green except for the officers. also the bismark sunk one ship and critically damaged the other
The sailors on the Bismarck could only be described as "Elite". They sailed, trained, practiced, and lived on that ship for almost a year and a half before Rheinubung, and they knew it like they knew their own bodies. The issue of crew preparedness was crucial for the German Navy, and because the Tirpitz's crew had ONLY had 8 months training, they refused to let the Tirpitz accompany Bismarck. Contrast this to the Prince of Wales, which sailed with civilian gun technicians on board!
The Iowas would have easily sunk the Bismarck. The British guns didn't have the sheer punch to hole the Bismarck's mags, but the Iowas and the Littorio class did. The Littorio would have sunk the Bismarck, as it had heavier, better armor, and MUCH better guns. The Bismarck was a legend because of the chase, and because the RN loves to hype their opponents, to make themselves look better. The Bismarck did not score a single hit on the British BBs that morning, despite firing for over 40 mins.
Whoops. Nothing whatsoever to do with "the punch" of the guns - but the trjactory. As any fool kno.. they closed the range and therefore limited options. They should have opened range to ~20k yards and then the shell would have been on a parabolic arc - i.e. plunged straight through the armour.
As any fool except the author of the previous post would know, a shell at ANY range travels on a parabolic trajectory; at 20k yards, not even the 18.1" of the Yamato class had the horizontal penetrating power to ventilate Bismarck's deck armor. At 3500 yards (the Rodney's range) the Littorio's guns had nearly 5 inches better penetration than the Rodney's did, and those 5 inches would have made all the difference in the world on that morning.
Of course - my mistake. I must remember to be more precise in my comments on this board. Thanks for being such a forgiving person rodentsaurus. I admire you.
If we're going to keep up this never-ending argument...an American Iowa-class battleship should have been able to handily kick the Bismarck's ass. Better radar, better range, much bigger broadside (9X16" rifles vs. 8X15"), better armor, and an edge in speed add up to a win, not even taking into account that the American sailors would have been better-trained, with more sea-time. The Bismarck was just not that awesome; it's the drama of its mission that has made it memorable.
The real Bismark took 2876 SHELLs from 4 brisish ships, How ever the bismark did not die from the shells, The only reason it sank is cause a british capt. took the time to rig the forward part of his ship with 2 torpedos. The battle took 7 hours and there was only like 120 servivors from both sides out of like 6,000. it was a bloody fight. The Bismark was targeted from day 1 and lasted for 9!
Bizmark lost the battle in the end and the Brits were Victorious. They achieved their objective whatever spin you put on it...The Pride of the German nation was on the bottom.
The HMS Hood too and it was sunk by a SINGLE ship with only 5 salves and the 6th salve was on the way BEFORE the Hood get even hit. The Prince of Wales get hit too and started fleeing from the fight. The Bismarck was sunk
by the crew not because of the damage it gets from the British ships and planes.
The bismarck sunk, because the captain of the bismarck blew a hole in the ship, because he didnt want to lose it to the enemy. Otherwise it had been suk by the british battelships.
@KizerVogner actually it was two old swordfish torpedo bombers that took out the bismark, each swordfish carries 4 torpedos, one hit the rudder one hit the center one hit the bow and idk where the others hit, i think some of them missed, but it was the swordfish that did the bismark in. otherwise this beautiful ship might have escaped
@KizerVogner What you say is true, however saying "survivors from both sides" is quite inaccurate, as practically no hits were scored on the English ships during Bismarcks final battle.
@KizerVogner It did not take 2800 shells, that is the number of shells that were fired at it, but only around 15 hit. The Bismarck was, apparently, scuttled by her crew. In any case, I am sure that it couldn't have withstood 2800 shells ranging in size from 10 to 16 inches, weighing at least 300 pounds each. Get your facts right before you post this kind of information.
your comment is not correct.. Bismarck had been chased by british naval forces for severeal days but was under fire in less then two hours. Bismarck couldn't really respond the fire since it's stearing system had suffered serious damages from an earlier attack from a Swordfish's torpedo. After, taking about approximately 300-400 hit, out of which 80 heavy-calibre (410mm), it sunk and 1,995 of the ship's crew of 2,200 died...
@KizerVogner Dude, you're wrong on that. Even the damage cause by the torpedoes didn't sink the Bismarck. It was sank by the their own demolition charges. The officers on board had received orders form high command to destroy the ship so that it wouldn't fall into the hands of the British. The Discovery Channel sent some teams down there, and what they saw was that the torpedoes had only penetrated the first layer of the armor and left the second layer intact.
@harrison28514 Actually, Discovery Channel sometimes doesn't know anything at all. Look at my responce on KizerVogner and you will see exactly what I mean. The torpedo DID NOT SINK the Bismark, it disabled its rudder. That's why Discovery Channel found the 2nd layer intact. The ship was sunk by the Brits, no Captain or Commander was ordered to sink the Battleship. Thank you again :)
@harrison28514 I have checked my sources after i read all these comments here. I did ask a veteran that lived the battle first-hand and I talked to some history tutors from the universities of Essex, Cardiff, Berlin and Munchen. The Bismark was sunk by the British Royal Navy and it was first damaged to the rudder that got stuck in a five degree turn and started circling. The plane that damaged it was a Swordfish biplane.
@KizerVogner Correction, the Bismark took fire from 4 ships, as you stated, BUT the torpedo did not come from any ship. The Bismark was spotted and attacked by a squadron of Fairy Swordfish biplanes. They carried torpedoes and as 4 of them missed, the 5th managed to hit the rear end of the Bismark. This torpedoe hit the rudder of the ship and that caused it to do circles all the time as the rudder was turned 5 degrees left. And there were more survivors.
@KizerVogner aye. what also screwed the bismarck up was the rudder being jammed right?, so it slowed its getway significantly, and ultimately hastened its demise right?
really? I thought Bismark was destroyed after one of those old ww1 biplanes hit its rudder with a torp, correct me if im wrong because i think i may be mistaking it with another ship.
TOO fast! slow those suckers down and you might have something. i used a cut down 12 volt cordless drill as a motor on a scale tugboat once, very realistic speed and plenty of power to push my friends weedeater boats back to shore when they had hiccups.
I can hear Johnny Horton singing:
Out of the cold and foggy night came the British ship the Hood
And every British seaman he knew and understood
They had to sink the Bismarck the terror of the sea
Stop those guns as big as steers and those shells as big as trees
We'll find the German battleship that's makin' such a fuss
We gotta sink the Bismarck cause the world depends on us
Yeah hit the decks a runnin' boys and spin those guns around
When we find the Bismarck we gotta cut her down

That's true. But still does not comply with this ship model with the facts. The flag of Germany has only existed since 1949. The German Empire existed until 1945. In 1941, the Bismarck was destroyed. It must, therefore, the swastika flag on the ship or at least the flag of the German Reich.
Please excuse my English, I come from Germany. I Translated into Google.

Bismarck is the greatest battleship ever build.
thales30 2 years ago
Bismark was technically a great piece of engineering but The German navy was not an integrated and balanced fleet. Which is why an obsolete biplane managed to get a hit which resulted in her ultimate destruction. Much the same would probably have happened to the Russian Red banner fleet had it ever sortied into the North Atlantic to take on Nato
savouryduck 2 years ago
the biplane torpedo hit was a pure fluke... Bismarck was almost within range of luftwaffe when it hit..
Of course german navy was dwarfed by royal navy... after all german lost the first world war and had very limited time building up a navy...
But that doesnt change the fact that Bismarck was a much better ship than everything the british had at the moment.. and ALL the other participants in the war for that matter.. bismarcks problem was of course that she was quite alone.... hehe
thales30 2 years ago
By the way.. im happy with the way the war ended.. but i cant help being pretty impressed by how superior the germans was in EVERY weaponsbranch.. except heavy bombers which they didnt have.. compared to ALL the other participants in the war..
thales30 2 years ago
In my view Germany lost the war because of two things. Lack of ressources and an utterly stupid fuhrer who made a neverending series of bad decissions strategicly...

A sitting duck with a LOT of firepower granted but the Brits had too many ships bearing down upon her for there to be any doubt about the eventual outcome.

bismark293847 2 years ago
If you want to be technical, almost the entire crew on board the bismark was green except for the officers. also the bismark sunk one ship and critically damaged the other
manofthehour91 2 years ago
The sailors on the Bismarck could only be described as "Elite". They sailed, trained, practiced, and lived on that ship for almost a year and a half before Rheinubung, and they knew it like they knew their own bodies. The issue of crew preparedness was crucial for the German Navy, and because the Tirpitz's crew had ONLY had 8 months training, they refused to let the Tirpitz accompany Bismarck. Contrast this to the Prince of Wales, which sailed with civilian gun technicians on board!
RodentSaurus 2 years ago
The Iowas would have easily sunk the Bismarck. The British guns didn't have the sheer punch to hole the Bismarck's mags, but the Iowas and the Littorio class did. The Littorio would have sunk the Bismarck, as it had heavier, better armor, and MUCH better guns. The Bismarck was a legend because of the chase, and because the RN loves to hype their opponents, to make themselves look better. The Bismarck did not score a single hit on the British BBs that morning, despite firing for over 40 mins.
RodentSaurus 2 years ago
Whoops. Nothing whatsoever to do with "the punch" of the guns - but the trjactory. As any fool kno.. they closed the range and therefore limited options. They should have opened range to ~20k yards and then the shell would have been on a parabolic arc - i.e. plunged straight through the armour.
clubsport911 2 years ago
As any fool except the author of the previous post would know, a shell at ANY range travels on a parabolic trajectory; at 20k yards, not even the 18.1" of the Yamato class had the horizontal penetrating power to ventilate Bismarck's deck armor. At 3500 yards (the Rodney's range) the Littorio's guns had nearly 5 inches better penetration than the Rodney's did, and those 5 inches would have made all the difference in the world on that morning.
RodentSaurus 2 years ago
Of course - my mistake. I must remember to be more precise in my comments on this board. Thanks for being such a forgiving person rodentsaurus. I admire you.
clubsport911 2 years ago
well, I have heard that Bismarck was one of the strongest ships in WW2, but also the most modern one.
Zombibombi62 2 years ago
If we're going to keep up this never-ending argument...an American Iowa-class battleship should have been able to handily kick the Bismarck's ass. Better radar, better range, much bigger broadside (9X16" rifles vs. 8X15"), better armor, and an edge in speed add up to a win, not even taking into account that the American sailors would have been better-trained, with more sea-time. The Bismarck was just not that awesome; it's the drama of its mission that has made it memorable.
LewBryson 2 years ago
this is an argument tahtwill go on for ever.
the british say - they were able to sink it (which we know is false *g*)
and the germans say - we sank it ourself (which we know is correct!)
and now guess what nation i'm from *g*
but in general this is what ppl from both nations say ;)

len78 2 years ago
The real Bismark took 2876 SHELLs from 4 brisish ships, How ever the bismark did not die from the shells, The only reason it sank is cause a british capt. took the time to rig the forward part of his ship with 2 torpedos. The battle took 7 hours and there was only like 120 servivors from both sides out of like 6,000. it was a bloody fight. The Bismark was targeted from day 1 and lasted for 9!
KizerVogner 2 years ago 20
yeah, thats true, Bismark is too heavy with its armor and the best ship in KM's Navy ( guess so )
that ship will be remembered for ever

Bizmark lost the battle in the end and the Brits were Victorious. They achieved their objective whatever spin you put on it...The Pride of the German nation was on the bottom.
rufousme 2 years ago
@rufousme
JazzJaRa 1 year ago
@KizerVogner exactly how can any ship IN THE WORLD take THAT many shots and so much as blow its horn afterwards?
think abotu the following cause the following is what your saying:
nearly 3,000 shells hit it and it didn't sink
only 2 countem TWO torpedoes hit it and it sinks.
by the sound of it id say those were nuclear torpedoes >:\
sweetsongman1 1 year ago
@KizerVogner
The bismarck sunk, because the captain of the bismarck blew a hole in the ship, because he didnt want to lose it to the enemy. Otherwise it had been suk by the british battelships.
3TonnenJoe 1 year ago
@KizerVogner actually it was two old swordfish torpedo bombers that took out the bismark, each swordfish carries 4 torpedos, one hit the rudder one hit the center one hit the bow and idk where the others hit, i think some of them missed, but it was the swordfish that did the bismark in. otherwise this beautiful ship might have escaped
trains457 1 year ago
@trains457
You are wrong.
The swordfish aircraft, although appearing old, was in fact not.
Each aircraft carried only one torpedo.
And there were far more than two aircraft sent to attack Bismarck
slightlyfloored 1 year ago
@KizerVogner What you say is true, however saying "survivors from both sides" is quite inaccurate, as practically no hits were scored on the English ships during Bismarcks final battle.

@KizerVogner bismark was scuttled by it's own crew torpedoes never got past the bulkhead
minionsoldier 1 year ago
@KizerVogner Ìt was also forced to sail in circles at some point, due to a bomb that hit the rudder, making it unable to use it, and it got jammed.
Fletzherdk 1 year ago
@KizerVogner the bisamrks was sinked be this own crew , his belt armor was so strog for that torpedos and they pactically dont do nathig .
Alrold 1 year ago
@KizerVogner It did not take 2800 shells, that is the number of shells that were fired at it, but only around 15 hit. The Bismarck was, apparently, scuttled by her crew. In any case, I am sure that it couldn't have withstood 2800 shells ranging in size from 10 to 16 inches, weighing at least 300 pounds each. Get your facts right before you post this kind of information.
alxcsb 1 year ago
@KizerVogner
your comment is not correct.. Bismarck had been chased by british naval forces for severeal days but was under fire in less then two hours. Bismarck couldn't really respond the fire since it's stearing system had suffered serious damages from an earlier attack from a Swordfish's torpedo. After, taking about approximately 300-400 hit, out of which 80 heavy-calibre (410mm), it sunk and 1,995 of the ship's crew of 2,200 died...

richardj11 1 year ago
@KizerVogner i believe the Captain of the Bismark ordered it to be scutteled
2stupid2poop 1 year ago
@KizerVogner Dude, you're wrong on that. Even the damage cause by the torpedoes didn't sink the Bismarck. It was sank by the their own demolition charges. The officers on board had received orders form high command to destroy the ship so that it wouldn't fall into the hands of the British. The Discovery Channel sent some teams down there, and what they saw was that the torpedoes had only penetrated the first layer of the armor and left the second layer intact.
harrison28514 1 year ago
@harrison28514 Actually, Discovery Channel sometimes doesn't know anything at all. Look at my responce on KizerVogner and you will see exactly what I mean. The torpedo DID NOT SINK the Bismark, it disabled its rudder. That's why Discovery Channel found the 2nd layer intact. The ship was sunk by the Brits, no Captain or Commander was ordered to sink the Battleship. Thank you again :)
geover330 1 year ago
@geover330
You sure it was sunk by the Brits not by its own crew? Because to me it seems to be the German style. Remember what happened to Admiral Graf Spee.
harrison28514 1 year ago
@harrison28514 I have checked my sources after i read all these comments here. I did ask a veteran that lived the battle first-hand and I talked to some history tutors from the universities of Essex, Cardiff, Berlin and Munchen. The Bismark was sunk by the British Royal Navy and it was first damaged to the rudder that got stuck in a five degree turn and started circling. The plane that damaged it was a Swordfish biplane.
geover330 9 months ago
@KizerVogner Correction, the Bismark took fire from 4 ships, as you stated, BUT the torpedo did not come from any ship. The Bismark was spotted and attacked by a squadron of Fairy Swordfish biplanes. They carried torpedoes and as 4 of them missed, the 5th managed to hit the rear end of the Bismark. This torpedoe hit the rudder of the ship and that caused it to do circles all the time as the rudder was turned 5 degrees left. And there were more survivors.
Thank you :)
geover330 1 year ago
@KizerVogner aye. what also screwed the bismarck up was the rudder being jammed right?, so it slowed its getway significantly, and ultimately hastened its demise right?
yamahonkawazuki 1 year ago
@KizerVogner It was the germans themself who sank the ship, "to have a dignified end"
olesensteffan 1 year ago
@KizerVogner
really? I thought Bismark was destroyed after one of those old ww1 biplanes hit its rudder with a torp, correct me if im wrong because i think i may be mistaking it with another ship.
