Your description is SOOOO true. Im riding a 10yr old holsteiner mare atm who has been abused. Ive known her for years and watched people fight with her to do stuff... of course being a stubborn mare, she fought back. When i ride her its not about how it looks, its about us working together. After 2 weeks she no longer runs away in the paddock, she collects on a VERY loose rein and will jump anything! If only she wasnt so expensive id buy her.

your description really makes me think about where I'm at with my mare, I've had her since may, and ever since August (the end of her month off on stall rest), it's been a fight. I wanted her to be exactly like she was before she had a month off, so I keep pushing her, even though I can look back on my ride and know it was wrong and hurtful. how did you make the realization to change? my heart is in the right place, but my mind is kinda running astray. I'd love to change before its too late.

I made the realization when he just looked sad every time I came out to see him, there was no enthusiasm on his behalf.

My advise to you would be forget about comparing her to what she used to be, forget about performance.

I'd take her out on hacks, go for canters up hills, walk through water, trot on a long rein, have a really fun time with her. The more you enjoy spending time with her the closer you will both become, and the more she will want to perform her best for you.
