American`s ( mainly) shut up the parachute was not used for the actual walk, it was just shown in the intro bit, in a later interview Dean Potter said that it was a mistake for them to do this as it damaged his credibility..

the parachute was only for him to do a base jump with... he jumped... he didn't fall... In the full programme he does actually do a slackline walk with NO, ZERO, NIL safety equipment to stop him falling... this really was an amazing programme, shame the trailer for it made him look lame by having parachute on... give the guy the respect he deserves...
