@MoonlightSonataTT Wikipedia describes her music as "jazz inspired pop music." It is notable that she generally recorded with musicians known for jazz, although jazz itself has a wide variety of variations. Compare two recordings you can find here on youtube both featuring legendary cornetist Bix Beiderbecke: "I'm Coming Virginia" and "Goose Pimples." Not even remotely similar, but both considered jazz.
What kind of shock would it have been in the 20s for record buyers to see that white Annette was being shown as singing a song from Blackbirds of 1928 and the song Black Stevedore--with a picture of the stevedore as well as her photo. Or was there more tolerance than we get told there was back then.
@Gydinglight12 There was MUCH more tolerance in the 20s than we are now led to believe. However, most of the "Mixing" was in private. The brown toned ladies were especially fond of having a white boyfriend to meet "privately" and a jazz song called Minglewood tries to warn the brown ladies to avoid such mingling as a resulting baby would have to be raised with much heartache for mother and child as neither race would claim them. The babies were disdainfully referred to as "high yellow" kids.
@allthatyouknow The song was called Minglewood but it is not the same song written by Noah Lewis and recorded by Cannons Jug Stompers in 1928-that is on YT. Grateful Dead & Old Crow Medicine Show also did later versions of Minglewood Blues but those were a takeoff of Noah Lewis' lyrics. I've searched the internet but cannot find the lyrics or music. It would probably be flagged off YT if anyone ever uploaded it because of the very controversial lyrics. I heard it on a 78 yeaes ago.
@Gydinglight12 well the thing is that it was not uncommon to see whitewashing of songs, and rich white folks even tried to get kicks in harlem some times, after all wasn't that the whole reason charlie and the other guys made bop? to make music white folk couldn't play
I absolutely love her version of the song. Sorry to leave such an inane comment, but just want to encourage people like you who post this sort of stuff.

its great games and movies are getting the new generation into jazz.
The future world will have cadilacs driving down the street with lots of swing,
blues, bigband and crooners on the radio. :D

Okay, am I the only one who thinks that it's absolutely adorable how she always ends with "That's all!"?
TimeVamp 6 months ago 17
@TimeVamp The "that's all" ending is mentioned by viewers in a few of my other Annette Hanshaw vids. Thanks for your comment.

I have to know: Is the genre of music jazz? Or something similar?

@preservationhall01 I heard that term 'high yellow' before, but never knew what it meant. Thanks for the definition
