Well guys, 1981 was the year that NBC cancelled Card Sharks w/Jim Perry and Chuck Woolery Exits the Wheel of Fortune, but both Jim and Chuck would return to NBC working for Reg Grundy Productions
Jim would host $ale of the Century for NBC and syndication from 1983-1989 while Chuck would host SCRABBLE from 1984-1990 and again in 1993 when it was paired w/Scattergories w/TV Icon Dick Clark
and Card Dealer Markie Post found great success after CS w/The Fall Guy on abc and Night Court on NBC
Not only that, NBC regretted cancelling Hollywood Squares so they were going to put on any show Merrill Heatter came up with and that was BATTLESTARS.
You got that part right. Nobody turned cards, or made the audiences come alive like Jim. An era ended when they canned it. WBZ Boston re-aired CS long after it ended in 1981. So time changes must have hurt the magnificent show.=((
It may have been new to Jim Perry, but Sale of the Century was NOT a new show--just a new version of it. The original version of it was on NBC in the early '70s--hosted by Joe Garagiola. How do I know this? My mother was the big winner on one episode--and she was VERY pregnant with me at the time (I'm 38 now).
@shawnkquinn Burt Sugarman didn't produce "Sale of the Century." The show was actually created and produced by Al Howard, who also created and produced "Supermarket Sweep."
I haven't seen it since I was a kid. I remember that when it was usually shown on USA back in the 80's. Great ending to a good game show. I wonder if the ending credits to the show like the way "Sale of the Century" did back in 1989, it should say "Card Sharks - The End" or the Looney Tunes version that I made, it should day "Card Sharks - That's all folks!" This should be a good idea for a Looney Tunes version of the final show.
And at the end, Jim Perry walked off stage leaving the crew behind. At least he did it in a more appropriate fashion, unlike what Ray Combs did on Family Feud 13 years later.
I only wish GSN can do full, uncrunched credits, like in the early days when it was called GAME SHOW NETWORK. Ideally, it should also include product/fee plugs and less voiceover (ie, GSN using that time to promote upcoming shows) during the credits.
This version of Card Sharks with Jim Perry was the best. Anything that had Jim Perry in it was great. An amazing man with a wonderful personality and voice. He was made for television!
They never considered PYL or Card Sharks. They were however considering Dating Game and Let's Make a Deal with Pyramid. However, Let's Make a Deal will be the only one being revived.
As great as "Card Sharks" was, I'd love to see CBS bring back "Whew!" That one was my all-time favorite. In fact, during that one season (1979-1980), that was the best two-hour block of game shows ever. 10am ET--Card Sharks on NBC; 10:30am ET--Whew! on CBS; 11am ET--Price is Right on CBS.
The overall total money given away on the NBC run of Card Sharks is $3,218,550.

Gotta love the classic podium jounce in the Money Card round. Jim Perry: definitely the best CS host ever IMHO.

That's the slowest I've ever seen credits roll on a game show. You could read every person who worked on that show. Kudos!

Only the director Breslow and the poor guys manning the cameras and operating the rolling credits didn't get to go up on stage.

@artytoons Don't feel too bad, artytoons. Mark Goodson himself didn't go up on stage either.

on Bob Eubank's finale, they also had a crappy Money Cards round there as well.

@megamanj2004X on Bill Rafferty's finale, they had a car win.

@megamanj2004X it was better than this one though, as I recall she won about $2,000.

NBC cancelling Card Sharks....worst programming decision EVER
When it comes to aces, deuces, polls and money cards, nobody did it better than Jim

I was told it was the time changes that killed Card Sharks

Mr. Perry would be back to NBC Daytime some 15 months later to host a new game show. Anybody wanna guess what it was???

@HoustonRules Joe was a replacement for Jack Kelly of Maverick fame. I remember seeing it when I was a kid, but I think all of the episodes are lost.

@efrem1 That's a shame. I would love to see the episode that my mom was in.

@efrem1 No, they aren't lost, producer Burt Sugarman has them, they just have not been reran since the original broadcast.

@pooka5472 The comment *I* was replying to was about "Whew!". Sorry if you got confused.

Great theme. Almost reminds me of the theme to Double Dare (The CBS Version with Alex Trebek).

Why not? They're resurrecting "Let's Make a Deal". "Press Your Luck" is coming to the Next Gen gaming consoles and PC.
Seems like it's high time for a lot of formats to come back.
calhoun24 2 years ago
I heard when they canceled Guiding light, some of the other shows they considered were pyramid, card sharks and press your luck.
