  • fml we're performing this play for school and i thought we were pretty alright and then i watched this and now my self confidence is at an all time low

  • i swear i thought hamlet was about to do his own mother! Insanity!

  • AllyMonkey123.... hahaha, good catch. What he says is "Do you not come your tardy son to chide..."? I keep seeing facial/hearing verbal "Doctor" ticks... however I do very much like Tennants Hamlet!!

  • listen carefully between 5:21 and 5:25 because i swear he says a word which sounds like tardis:P i didn't realise the doctor could jump into other characters minds XD

  • Mad makes him even more.. hotter. - God. I think I have some big problems. :'D

  • Maybe it's my pre-existing love for all things Tennant, but I love this version of Hamlet. I think this scene is the best, because he's almost scary in how manic he gets, but then he also manages to cam down and sound more sane in certain parts. I think he's fantastic.

  • Gibson and Branagh are better. Just because he does an awesome Doctor doesn't make him a good Hamlet. Way too hammy. At least Gibson's Hamlet warranted hamminess, but this. Just no.

  • @Wodism You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but just keep in mind that many have an opinion that differs, including many of the critics who reviewed his performance. I also doubt if he would be representing Shakespeare's Hamlet on a Royal Mail commemorative stamp if he was indeed that bad.

  • @rocketwoofer I understand it differs. I really like parts of Tennant's Hamlet, but I think he goes a bit overboard with the acting crazy is all. It's just off putting. I'm just saying it gets a bit hammy, and too hammy for me at times.

  • @Wodism Well, I do enjoy his acting insane the most when it is that quiet, dangerous kind of crazy. Then, it's all in his eyes and he knows how to make you want to want to duck behind the couch.

  • @rocketwoofer I love the quiet, dangerous, "maybe he's actually broken" kind of crazy, but at the parts where Hamlet is acting crazy I think Tennant goes a little too hammy with the faces and the voices and whatnot. Most actors play the wacky craziness with whimsy, but Tennant goes more silly than whimsical imo. I guess that's where I disconnect, and it kind of hurts my perception of him for the rest of the play, in which he does do a more than respectable job.

    Still, to each their own.

  • I've seen Hamlet jillions of times, but I think David Tennant is the best. Patrick Stewart is always best.

  • die at the hands of david tennant, kenneth branagh, die....

  • @1:00 he sounds exactly like The Dr.

  • 8:09 "a kind of easiness"...did i hear a scottish accent creeping through there? ^^

  • "Speak to her, Hamlet" and than Hamlet and his father aren't shown together until the ghost leaves.

Those are the things that make you appreciate a product when you notice them.

  • I AM SLAIN.

  • Mighty chilly in Elsinore.

  • this is by far my favorite production and scene of Hamlet. Tennant is fucking sexy.

  • ...Even playing crazy, David Tennant still turns me on. wut.

  • Dr. WHOmlet.

  • "Do you not call your tardy son..."

    >__> I heard him say 'call your tardis on'

  • "Good night..... Oh, yeah, I killed someone."

  • At first I started out watching this movie, without a clue of what anyone was saying, now I'm like, seems like a regular movie.

  • @KEVINBUSCUS That's why I hate when kids are all like "it's soooo hard, Shakespeare's dumb, no one can understand it..." If you are actually paying attention they're just words, in English, which are totally understandable IF you're trying,

  • lol "ung, eng, blgreb!"

    -Polonius

  • i never found hamlet this intriguing

  • Brutal scene. I can't imagine how knackered they both were after this scene.

  • Oliver Ford Davies actually made the "O, I am slain!" line sound convincing. Incredible!

  • @LongLiveHumour Lol my name's Oliver Davies. Sorry, I'm probably not supposed to say Lol on a video of a Shakespeare production am I?

  • Hamlet's on the warpath - better not blink, Claudius!

  • lol Hamlet, u mad bro

  • @NewspaperCat i believe that his fained madness ends here and this is where the genuine severity of his mental stress is revealed. especially in this version, at first everyone can see the ghost (bernado, marcellus and horatio) however now gertrude cannot levaing the interpretation that it is a figurement of his imagination. =]

  • for being an older lady, she has still looks quite perky without a bra...and i mean that ina non creepy way....

  • Hamlet is one of my favorite plays of all time. I never thought I could ever love it anymore than I had.

    Then I watched this clip.

Im infatuated on a completely different level.

    Well done, david. Well done.

  • @JBCVids Bad luck, yes. 7 years? ...no spoilers for people who don't know the ending

  • wow, i never thought hamlet could look so sexy XD

  • Nice to see a version WITHOUT Hamlet sitting on his mother looking like he's about to do her. Thank you, David Tennant and cast, for rescuing the Gertrude's closet scene from the lewdness it had acquired from previous interpretations.

  • i can't bear the look on david's face at 6:16

  • @babzb3 D:

  • God, this gave me the shivers.

  • God, David Tennant is fantastic in this scene.

  • David's acting gives me chills.

  • AMAZING!!!

  • David's "antic disposition" is fantastic.

  • looool i loled so hard when polonius died, LMFAOO

  • When you start taking a Freudian view of this scene... it become slightly disturbing. But god, Tennant's acting is impeccable!

  • 7:12

I lost all sense of being involved in the play when i heard David Tennant mention "time".

    Too many memories..

  • Its The Doctor...Oh, it is hard to watch him be so deranged...

  • The broken mirror...so beautiful.

  • Oh Doctor...

  • Be it this man's talent that shredth Hamlet's swagger,

Like the remains of a lofty mind

    Prostrate by the temporal dagger-

    Oh discretion, be enough kind.

  • Be it this man's talent that shredth Hamlet's swagger,

Like the remains of a lofty mind

    Prostrate by the temporal dagger-

    Oh discretion, be enough kind.

  • i love this and i love david tennant

  • NIPPLESS!!

  • nipples!!

  • 5:11

David Tennant's so good at falling down!

  • nooo polonius !! this is the first time i'm actually sad sad that polonius died!!!! he is GREAT !!

  • I love 6:21-6:35

  • I, like the rest of you, have seen this scene done many times by many actors but I have never seen it done quite like this. I was sincerely moved.

  • 7:10 shouldn't he mean 'my pulses'? ;D

  • @47985555 win. XD

  • One person is a goodly rotten apple.

  • This is such an intense scene, so much emotion in it.

  • this is one of my favourite scenes

  • "now mother, what's the matter?" - uh, aside from me... :)

  • Wow, David Tennant can be really scary!

  • I really like that didn't put in the incest in this...that REALLY disturbed me in the Mel Gibson version

  • dang he sure makes Hamlet seem crazy. Not that he isn't. But Tennant makes him seem even more so!

  • My favourite Hamlet

  • I love how they're like, oh Polonius is dead, whateva, MOVING ON

  • Good lord, David Tennant does insane well.

Granted, he does everything well, but this is brutal. I love it. His talent blows my mind every time.

  • @TwistedTemptation7 most intense Hamlet I've seen.

  • it be getting oedipal up in dis

  • At one point there, it so looked like he was gonna rape his mother! And everything he said about incest earlier :p

  • I have newfound respect for Tennant in this role after watching this scene...I wasn't too impressed with his version of the "To be or not to be" speech--no fault of Tennant's it IS such a difficult one to pull off, and as it's the most well-known and powerful speech in all of literature it's nearly impossible to live up to--but HERE he really does shine, quickly and effectively changing his moods, adding layers to layers of personality.

And Patrick Stewart is Patrick Stewart here, ie SUPERB.

  • @obiwanobiwan13 I don't think to be or not to be was his fault...that was a directorial thing the monotone, and the nothingness and you can see why Gregory Doran decided it that way, it's a speech that is just too well known the idea to strip it of all theatricality wasn't a bad way to go.

In fact I have to say that I have never seen it being pulled off very well. My lecturer I think did it the greatest amount of justice when he did it for the class.

  • The look at 6:16 says so much... it's just perfect. <3

  • Nooooo - Polonius was so good in this, it's sad to see him go.

  • 1. This scene is awesome (and so is the whole play)

    2. You can buy this dvd at Best Buy here in America

    3. Did anyone else notice her hard nipples from 1:10-1:16? The whole scene practically!

  • "Lay not that flattering unction to your soul/ That not your trespass but my madness speaks." Shakespeare always amazes.

Being perhaps culpably inattentive, I had never heard of either Mr Tennant or Ms Downie before seeing this production on PBS. I cannot praise them highly enough!

  • If you ignore who the actors are for one second and think of the power and drawing power of this scene, it is amazing! I have never been so pulled into theatre and I don't think I blinked during this entire act! So amazing and ignoring the actors, it's all because of one man! SHAKESPEARE!

  • David Tennant really kicked ass in this adaptation--I hope people that see this realize that he's more than just Doctor Who (though he was amazing in that). And Penny Downie was beautiful and just fantastic, as usual.

  • This scene is amazingly portrayed. DT rocked it out.

  • Next greatest line the 10th Doctor will never say "Now Mother whats the matter!!"

  • how did that shot go THROUGH a mirror?

  • This scene scared me.

I didn't understand a lot, because my english isn't good enough, but I found it so intense... I loved it!

Tennant is such a brilliant actor!

  • he's BRILLIANT!

  • ShadedRogue, I couldn't say it any better. David's fantastic, there are no other word. Whenever I read Hamlet, I picture him.

  • Tennant's expression when he hears Polonius is priceless.

  • I love how you can tell it's David even before he comes on screen. "Moooother, moooooooooother! Motheeeeer!" Life = made.

  • These words like daggers enter in my ears. MORE DAVID! MORE!

  • "I am slain"- what a line!

  • I love how the ghost is right behind Gertrude, and Hamlet sees them both next to each other.

He is definitely the best Mad Hamlet I've seen - he genuinely acts out of his mind.

  • LOL at the dying Polonius! HEHEHE!

  • I hope whoever it was that complained about the RSC casting "that man from Doctor Who" as Hamlet paid special attention to this scene.

  • David Tennant = Win.

  • This is such a perfect cast of actor, and such a incredible play. Having David Tennant playing Hamlet is such a good decision, it just shous how amazing he really is at acting, how he can play the doctor and be such an icon and then play one of the world's most iconic roles in history and still make it different, his own and make people him as Hamlet and not as the doctor. Perfect no other word for this production by the Royal Shakespeare company. Incredible.

  • He is such a great actor... LOL it's kind of funny every so often you can hear a scottish tone in his voice.

IDC what anyone says he will always be the great doctor in my veiw!

  • david tennent is amazing. hes still dr who to me though

  • what an energy he has.. in this scene he talks/screams constantly for 8 minutes!! xD

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE.

having played gertrude, this is the first gertrude i have seen in a hamlet film that i actually liked. she's amazing. he's amazing.

  • @etherealangel712 as an addendum, he is kicking kenneth branagh's ass all over the place. it's so beautiful.

  • @etherealangel712 I never thought I'll say this but he does kick Brannagh's ass, feel pity for Brannagh making such a huge effort!

  • Oh. My. God. I was shivering so much like the mother when I watched this. His eyes are so maddening and raging with passion. Priceless. David Tennant is officially even more amazing.

  • I love it when she laughs in his face. Let's face it, he needed to be knocked down a few pegs.

  • LOL! Man he is good!

  • oh my gosh that literally took my breath away. david tennant, you are an amazing actor, how the heck do you do it??

  • Given the fact that Hamlet is basically on a (admittedly slow) rampage against his mother's incestuous relationship with his uncle, I have never really bought the idea that he was in love with Gertrude. It's just reading more between the lines than I think there was meant to be. You don't have to be in love with your mom to be ticked off when she does something really wrong and won't admit it.

  • See, I know this is a very powerful scene and I don't mean to make it seem cheap in any way, but when you've watched it about a million times oyu notice the little things like at 6:53 when Hamlet's cumberband (?) has ridden up and Gertrude's gaping top hinting at the slight level of incest between the chaarcters. I love it

  • @nellytheninkynonk

That's how it's supposed to be. Many interpretations of "Hamlet" hint at the sexual tension that is present in the relationship between Hamlet and Gertrude. In fact, in one film adaptation of "Hamlet" (the one starring Mel Gibson, if I recall) this particular scene resembles an act of rape (committed by Hamlet upon his mother).

  • too right, my favorite scene so far

  • This film is going to be released in America May 4th?

  • 2:44

  • breathtaking. I can't thank you enough!

  • One of the best productions of Hamlet I've ever seen, and I've seen many versions of it. Very well done!!

  • Wow, this scene is SO intense!

  • patrick stewart is the best man in the world, he hasnt aged in 20 years and he is british :O

  • 1:30

    expecto patronum!

    actually, it's probably morsmordre...

  • David Tennant is hot! I really want this on DVD, when will the BBC release this in America?

  • april

  • 6:16 wow... david looks really handsome

  • any suprise there?

  • 2:45 for my own reference

  • woo hoo! XD

  • Thank you so very much for posting these clips. This isn't showing here in the States until the end of April!

Absolutely brilliant production of one of my very favorite plays.

  • The queen....is that Penny Downie. I never saw her before, but she is terrific.

They all are. Despite the fact, that this piece has been subjected to experiments and new ideas for decades, they have managed to find new angles, where there shouldn´t be any left.

I just ordered the VD from RSC :-D

  • he looks sooo hot in tht i love him to bits!!

  • I am astounded by this man's talent.

    Also....tuxedo for the win.

  • @hogwartsianhobbit See, why isn't this in the top comments? 124 thumbs up is definetly more than 26

  • I will make it so....

  • Damn powerful. People here in America don't really realise just how great an actor David is. And that scene with Pat Stewart was utterly amazing.

  • Every moment is a masterpiece! (I'm so glad I had the chance to see this on stage, too :))

  • Gah... I seriously want to watch this...!

  • This scene just shows how much of a powerful actor David really is

  • @emopuppy2007 He is amazing and brought hamlet to life with his extraordinary talent at just bringing every character he acts to life. My facebook page dedicated to the amazing acting of not just him as hamlet but everything - subscribe if u agree. David-Tennant-as-Hamlet - type it into the search box to subscribe.

  • David Tennant would KICK ASS as the Riddler !! If you have a Facebook, search for the group "David Tennant as the next Riddler" and join it ! Now !! Please =(

  • That was Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Martha's sister

  • Dude, when are you posting the rest of this ? I'm in America as well and really want to see it ! God... David looks very skinny in this. Little bit more than usual. Still smexy, though

  • @gallifreygrl182 email me I'm in USA and have it.

  • More please?

  • Powerful.

  • I love the high pitched sound he makes at 0:29 when he says "Mother!". :D

And at 5:22, I can't help but think that it almost sounds like he says "tardis". XD

I wish that I could see the whole movie/play! It looks amazing! =)

  • Stewart is always best when playing ghosts. :3

  • Wow, it's really powerful! This scene really gets to me.

  • I could make a hundred Star Strek or Doctor Who joke, but that would be poor taste. You just don't make stupid jokes with Shakespear.

    *sigh* Ok fine...

    ZOMG PICARD AND THE DOCTOR!!
