listen carefully between 5:21 and 5:25 because i swear he says a word which sounds like tardis:P i didn't realise the doctor could jump into other characters minds XD
Maybe it's my pre-existing love for all things Tennant, but I love this version of Hamlet. I think this scene is the best, because he's almost scary in how manic he gets, but then he also manages to cam down and sound more sane in certain parts. I think he's fantastic.
Gibson and Branagh are better. Just because he does an awesome Doctor doesn't make him a good Hamlet. Way too hammy. At least Gibson's Hamlet warranted hamminess, but this. Just no.
@Wodism You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but just keep in mind that many have an opinion that differs, including many of the critics who reviewed his performance. I also doubt if he would be representing Shakespeare's Hamlet on a Royal Mail commemorative stamp if he was indeed that bad.
@rocketwoofer I understand it differs. I really like parts of Tennant's Hamlet, but I think he goes a bit overboard with the acting crazy is all. It's just off putting. I'm just saying it gets a bit hammy, and too hammy for me at times.
@Wodism Well, I do enjoy his acting insane the most when it is that quiet, dangerous kind of crazy. Then, it's all in his eyes and he knows how to make you want to want to duck behind the couch.
@rocketwoofer I love the quiet, dangerous, "maybe he's actually broken" kind of crazy, but at the parts where Hamlet is acting crazy I think Tennant goes a little too hammy with the faces and the voices and whatnot. Most actors play the wacky craziness with whimsy, but Tennant goes more silly than whimsical imo. I guess that's where I disconnect, and it kind of hurts my perception of him for the rest of the play, in which he does do a more than respectable job.
@KEVINBUSCUS That's why I hate when kids are all like "it's soooo hard, Shakespeare's dumb, no one can understand it..." If you are actually paying attention they're just words, in English, which are totally understandable IF you're trying,
@NewspaperCat i believe that his fained madness ends here and this is where the genuine severity of his mental stress is revealed. especially in this version, at first everyone can see the ghost (bernado, marcellus and horatio) however now gertrude cannot levaing the interpretation that it is a figurement of his imagination. =]
Nice to see a version WITHOUT Hamlet sitting on his mother looking like he's about to do her. Thank you, David Tennant and cast, for rescuing the Gertrude's closet scene from the lewdness it had acquired from previous interpretations.
I have newfound respect for Tennant in this role after watching this scene...I wasn't too impressed with his version of the "To be or not to be" speech--no fault of Tennant's it IS such a difficult one to pull off, and as it's the most well-known and powerful speech in all of literature it's nearly impossible to live up to--but HERE he really does shine, quickly and effectively changing his moods, adding layers to layers of personality.
And Patrick Stewart is Patrick Stewart here, ie SUPERB.
@obiwanobiwan13 I don't think to be or not to be was his fault...that was a directorial thing the monotone, and the nothingness and you can see why Gregory Doran decided it that way, it's a speech that is just too well known the idea to strip it of all theatricality wasn't a bad way to go.
In fact I have to say that I have never seen it being pulled off very well. My lecturer I think did it the greatest amount of justice when he did it for the class.
"Lay not that flattering unction to your soul/ That not your trespass but my madness speaks." Shakespeare always amazes.
Being perhaps culpably inattentive, I had never heard of either Mr Tennant or Ms Downie before seeing this production on PBS. I cannot praise them highly enough!
If you ignore who the actors are for one second and think of the power and drawing power of this scene, it is amazing! I have never been so pulled into theatre and I don't think I blinked during this entire act! So amazing and ignoring the actors, it's all because of one man! SHAKESPEARE!
David Tennant really kicked ass in this adaptation--I hope people that see this realize that he's more than just Doctor Who (though he was amazing in that). And Penny Downie was beautiful and just fantastic, as usual.
This is such a perfect cast of actor, and such a incredible play. Having David Tennant playing Hamlet is such a good decision, it just shous how amazing he really is at acting, how he can play the doctor and be such an icon and then play one of the world's most iconic roles in history and still make it different, his own and make people him as Hamlet and not as the doctor. Perfect no other word for this production by the Royal Shakespeare company. Incredible.
Oh. My. God. I was shivering so much like the mother when I watched this. His eyes are so maddening and raging with passion. Priceless. David Tennant is officially even more amazing.
Given the fact that Hamlet is basically on a (admittedly slow) rampage against his mother's incestuous relationship with his uncle, I have never really bought the idea that he was in love with Gertrude. It's just reading more between the lines than I think there was meant to be. You don't have to be in love with your mom to be ticked off when she does something really wrong and won't admit it.
See, I know this is a very powerful scene and I don't mean to make it seem cheap in any way, but when you've watched it about a million times oyu notice the little things like at 6:53 when Hamlet's cumberband (?) has ridden up and Gertrude's gaping top hinting at the slight level of incest between the chaarcters. I love it
That's how it's supposed to be. Many interpretations of "Hamlet" hint at the sexual tension that is present in the relationship between Hamlet and Gertrude. In fact, in one film adaptation of "Hamlet" (the one starring Mel Gibson, if I recall) this particular scene resembles an act of rape (committed by Hamlet upon his mother).
