I like to think of it as an extremely advanced 2D version of Minecraft.

For my fortress defense, I dig a moat, then put a long bridge over it. then I dig under the bridge about 10 stories, and place upright stakes at the bottom of the pit.  Then, you just hook the bridge up to a lever, and when the gobbies attack, you set "Pull the lever" to repeat. Then you just train a few archers to take care of any lucky ones that make it across.

I never really use any close combat dwarves, the first squad I train is always wielding crossbows. Just have a legendary bonecrafter and you will never run out of bolts. It's kind of ironic and suiting that I shoot sieging goblins with bolts made from the bones of their predecessors.

I remember my first goblin ambush, consisting of three wrestlers and three marksgobbos. I only had one marksdwarf prepared, and he didn't even have a lot of bolts on him, so he ran in mid-fight and clubbed a goblin wrestler to death with his -cougar bone crossbow- until a marksgoblin broke his arm. Three Wrestler Champions were shot down that day, two of them getting their throats shot out, but then a war dog ripped off the legs of the goblin that killed his owner. It was Fun.

My fortresses are always horribly unefficient. I figured out the reason when it was already too late. I hate stone lying around, so I designated it for dumping and atom-crushed it.

Every dwarf who wanted to build something had to run a long way. And that's not good. Especially considering that I have two layers of sand and my stone stockpiles are usually deep down. Wall and tower projects took a very long time.

If I have dwarves that aren't doing I make stone dumps around my central stairway. Then when I get most of the stones on a level on the single dump spot I remove the zone and reclaim all the stone.

It makes a short trip being so close to the central stairway, and it combines all the stone without the clutter.

Also if I make a big dining room or something I just create floors with the stone instead of smoothing it. It uses up the stone, and I can use Masons and Engravers at the same time.

Actually, that's not correct. You can only engrave natural smoothed floors, so it'll only train your masons. I prefer smooth+engrave because engraved floors are better than built floors. Also, the engravings are pretty cool.

Yeah, I didn't mean engraving the stone. I meant that once you have every stone space set to be paved you can smooth the spaces that don't have rocks on them.

What I meant was that it would go faster, since you have all of your masons getting rid of stone and making floors, and engravers smoothing stone, instead of just one or the other.

Keep playing and once you get more dwarves (like around 20 or so) you'll have a much higher chance of getting ambushed/sieged. Sieges are *awesome*. Thanks for your time :)

I liked the game, but never could make it that far. I sorta wanted to just jump in and figure it out as a I went... didn't really work, although I loved going into the dungeons and breaking limbs :)

I hope they get a more beginner-friendly interface, because I can't help but be in awe of a game this big (the world-generation part is just great). A simple graphical overlay and maybe a consistent control scheme and I'll never stop playing.

there was no gate, coz it was 3 spaces wide...not enough for doors, but just enough for a caravan...and goblins to fit through.

When they got in, the hallway was a shooting range. they just shot everyone up against the wall... even the children were all killed.

I built my fortress over an aquifer and have no stones/metals so I'm waiting for my liaison to deliver me stones to build my water wheel/screwpump combo to pump out my basement so i can collect the stones. the game is so complex. iv only just started playing it and it a real mystery. there is just too much ta remeber. so i just went with adventure mode. chose an Axe-woman as a charachter, wandered around the starter town, talked to the people, found a child, and attacked it, i cleaved it with my axe(you just HAVE to kill children in video games otherwise it would go against the concept of vidya games), and ended up being slaughtered by the entire town

Technically dwarf fortress is still in its beta stages and is under constant work by its two creators. Also the graphics are ASCII which in this day and age I can't blame anyone for calling them shitty, but there's just so much going on in this game at any time that it already takes a pretty decent computer just to run it with little lag. If it had fancy graphics it wouldn't be able to run on any PC, the workload would be too high. The plan is to improve the graphics later when PCs become better

oh yeah, i do use them most of the time, but youtube allows for a maximum of 480x360 resolution, and the built in resolution is 480x300 (or something close). no aliasing will happen if i record at this resolution!
