Hey - Rick holdin' his own here. I've been to 4 or 5 Ricky Scaggs concerts - and he can play a mean electric guitar. Hell - he can play a mean everything.
James Burton is my uncle and just wanted to clear up on his age he is not pushing 80, he is my mother's younger brother, she was born August 22, 1932 and he on August 21, 1939, which makes him 72. We are very proud of him. He reminds me so much of my mother, which she passed away in October of 2005, she loved her brother so very much.
@myz31bmr James inspired me to take up the guitar, never got as good as he is, but very few ever do. Next time you see thank him from John R for all of his great guitar work, his playing has enriched my life for sure!
helluva lot of talent on that stage!! mystery train is the one song that brings it all together...everyone from elvis to UFO to brian setzer. the band, vince and the boys...what treat to have it all as close as youtube!!
James Burton is the ONE who taught all the kids how to play. By kids I mean Vince Gill, Brad Paisley, etc. Rock & Country guitarist were influence by his style, which he developed in the mid 1950s. but it goes back farther to Chet and Les.
@jcrobso: Don't forget Jimmy Bryant and guys like Phil Baugh and Leon Rhodes, too... and Don Rich and Roy Nichols, et al. There's been hot tele players around for a long time. Bryant remains one of Albert Lee's biggest influences, and I'll bet the same is true for Burton. Heck, JB probably jammed with him...he's played with darned near everyone. The rocakbilly guys were probably a big influence on JB, too, and he on them.
Im a major guitar fan im 50 and i got a plastic guitar with gene vincent on when i was 7 and ive listened to every guitarist of note that played on vinyl or cassette inc eight track guys who are my heros allen collins "skynyrd" randy rhoads "ozzy" bill nelson "be bop deluxe" alvin lee "ten years after" also clapton knopfler wylde halen burton akkerman and even dutch gypsy virtuoso jimi rosenberg but to my shame i only discovered albert lee about five years back did i have my head up my ass jee
the first time I heard this I had such a smile on my face after Burton's first ride. the I saw the same smile on the face of Skaggs and Lee. Burton was/is such a GREAT guitar player!! (i had the privilege of playing with him at a mutual friends home over in Shreveport a few years ago.)
@tele65 Though the fact of the matter is that James is older than Vince Ricky, and albert, and they all grew up listening to him, and this is where the great respect comes from. Putting all emotional bias aside and looking at this realistically, James (as legendary as he may be) is the least talented of the 4 of them. Vince is the closes to him talent/skill wise, but Ricky and Albert are in a whole nother league above him.
Way too many people judge talent with a huge emotional bias.
@SteveSbc406: It isn't so simple. Every musician is talented in his own way. James does not have to prove anything to anyone, nor do any of the other guys. There's no "best" oin music, only what you like and do not like, what moves you or fails to. I attended this show, and all of the artists played great - even James who is now pushing eighty or perhaps a bit more!
@GeorgiaBoy1961 I beg your pardon sweetie. Pushing 80? I met James on the Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport LA when he was 16. He was already the reputation of being the best guitarist in the area. I'm a few years older than he is and am NOT pushing 80.
@Kat38: Feeling just a bit "sensitive" about your age, are you? His bio. on Wiki says he was born in 1939, which would make him about 72 or so, depending when his birthday fallls. He's been good so long it just feels like he's been around forever, even if that isn't really true. I'm jealous... I wish I'd lived back in those times, and seen all those great acts.
@GeorgiaBoy1961 No, I'm never sensitive about my age. I've seen so much and I relish every moment. Especially in music. There just aren't many left. The first loss that really affected me was Johnny Horton. More in between. The last was Fred Carter, Jr in 2010. Deana Carter's dad. Look him up, he was my first love. Seems like I'm outliving them all. I'm 73 and had always thought James was a couple of years younger. His voice hadn't changed when I knew him.
@GeorgiaBoy1961 There is also the little story of some members of the Hayride taking James down to Mexico to "initiate" him. It didn't work, think the girl scared him to death...
@Kat38: Cripes almighty! Whatever it is that happened, I don't want to know, OK? Just let me enjoy the man's music without bringing his personal life into it.
No doubt all have more than passing acquaintance with the git fiddle, but Vince seldom gits an honorable mention. I think he made his livin in the studio and I can recall he had considerable ability. Take it away, Leon
OK. "It's not a contest". They're all GREAT! Amazing Talent and great vid. But, let's face it....There ain't nobody "slicker and quicker" than Albert Lee! I've been a fan since he played with Emmy Lou Harris in the '70s.
A fantastic upload, this is seriously as good as it gets. I still have a huge smile on my face simply from watching how these great players enjoy what they do.
Monster pickers! Skaggs and Lee look like characters from a Dickens novel. At 3:05 Burton plays his "Oo Las Vegas" riff. At the end Gill inadvertently flips the bird pushing up his glasses. Great clip!
Would you just look at all that amazing talent on stage all together. Most people only notice the guitar players but then you listen to the Drummer, the Bass Player, The Rhythm guitar player and the keyboard player....these cats are "Cookin" somethin HOT so that the guitar players have a hot train to ride on.
@kc5tng: Well-said, because without a hot band behind him, even the best guitar player isn't going to sound nearly as good. Hit-making producers and musicians know that chart-topping songs - and bands - are built from the bottom up. The rhythm section has to have its act together, or that special maginc can't happen. I used to be a bassist, and now play mostly guitar, so I have experienced the good and the bad of that statement both.
This is what music is all about........sharing licks & enjoying what's going on. Albert Lee looks like a kid in a lolly shop, so happy to in the company of his heros.
The great James Burton wrote the textbook for rock guitar. How eagerly we awaited his playing behind Rick Nelson which occurred at the end of each episode of "The Nelsons".
@tunefultony Yeah, Albert's grin is positively huge! He's absolutely loving it. But, as far as heroes go, I would think it's the other way around. Before Vince was Albert. He's regarded as one of the kings of chicken pickin'. Vince, Ricky and the others are in awe when he let's it go. Although to me Vince is just as impressive a picker in his own way...
@swamilainen You're correct. Albert was Vince Gill's mentor. I meant that James Burton was Albert's hero. I agree about Vince's picking......it's inspiring. Check out his solo on Oklahoma Borderline on the Crossroads DVD. It's one of the best & appears so effortless.
@tunefultony James Burton was regular lead guitarist for 3 great musicians who died very young.First Ricky Nelson RIP,then Elvis RIP finally Gram Parsons RIP.
@RasMajnouni What a great CV to have. He was also Emmy Lou Harris' guitarist for a couple of years. He was also the first guitar player to bend notes up a full tone. He couldn't do it using conventional strings at that time......so he substituted banjo strings.
Elvis was Burton's biggest fan & loved listening to James' solos.
I see Ricky Slaggs whenever he does a show in Manhattan. Then I went to the Grand Ole Opry and saw his wife, Sharon White performing with her family. It would've been nice to attend this!
Thanks for the post. I was standing just to your right, but being short I was blocked a little. Seeing Albert's big grin while James Burton was soloing was priceless!
This is brilliant - I love the relentless rhthym and I agree with comments about music and Albert's happiness about being with these wonderful musicians as he himself is! Wish they could all come over to London, England!
Great video Thanks, Look how Albert Lee smiles with so much respect and happiness when James Burton plays. Albert is probably the most skilled player of the gang but he shows so much modesty that it is a lesson for many of us.
Im pretty sure james burton and glenn cambell were in a group on the patty dike show once, definitely showing my age.
