the mad dog was a beast, and was totally underated in my opinion and his feud with tommy rich was one of the best feuds in wrestling history and he had the best power slam in the business. i miss the old nwa days when they broadcasted from the old tv studios i never missed a show. F*CK WWF
Ahh, Buzz Sawyer, one of the few men on the planet who could make Cactus Jack seem normal by comparison. Gotta love Kevin Sullivan's wrestling acumen, btw. Good stuff.
@144church Yea, I always thought so too. He played the maniac gimmick perfectly and even though he was pretty jacked, I think because he is only 5ft 10 he didn't make it bigger
More of this kind of thing TNA / WWE, no costumes or big hype build ups, just a guy in character and obviously having a lot of fun with it.Doing unpredictable shit on any given night and not limited to PPV's only.
JESUS CHRIST! You see... that's the one thing modern wrestling doesn't have today... unique character development. Today, all the bad guys have the same damn annoying as fuck ego, they're all unlikable pricks and DESIGNED to be as such... and the few good guys they do have are either DRAMATICALLY overdone like John Cena, copies of each other, or really really stupid. Now, one thing I've thought modern wrestling as ALWAYS missed is crazy mother fuckers LIKE THIS... HOLY SHIT! good or bad, RUN!
I worked at a bar called Dee Ford's in Atlanta in the late 80's. Dee's was a huge wrestler hangout. Buzz and his buddies Ric Flair and Tommy Rich were notorious for laying lines on the tables in the back and letting all the girls do some.
@Warpigpen i heard buzz and tommy were far from friends they fought backstage from what i heard, are you sure you saw sawyer and rich party, and jjj dillon said flair never did coke, try again!
Love the promo by Sullivan here: "When his mother was carrying him, she was walking through the desert, 'cause she was a nomad . . . " Stark raving, batshit crazy. And that Boston accent was the perfect topping on that whole character. As others have said here, when you can make Mick Foley look normal, that's a pretty good accomplishment!
tna should make their show more like wcw in the late 80s early 90s instead of trying to re-do nwo shit everybody was already sick of this was wcw back at its best
@ginflorala Kevin Sullivan was in ECW for a bit, back when it was EASTERN Championship Wrestling. He had his then-wife Nancy (as "Woman") as his valet. She did the same thing for Sandman a few years later.
@elc1960: Not counting his two show return in November, Sullivan's last appearance in ECW was at When Worlds Collide on May 14, 1994. Jimmy Snuka (w/Hunter Q. Robbins III) d. Sullivan when Robbins tripped up Sullivan and held his leg down while the Sandman took Woman away from the ring. Woman made her debut in Sandman's corner a month later at ECW Hostile City Showdown on June 24, 1994.
Buzz Sawyer should of not used the Jam Sandwich move. If you look at him doing it in this video you can see how much abuse his arm takes everytime he hits it.
Wow Buzz Sawyer, Kevin Sullivan, all you need is Jake the Snake and Mark Lewin to complete the Sullivan Gang from Florida. Hey I heard Kevin Sullivan is a suspect in the murder of Chris Benoit and family? Any truth to that rumor??
@Deanpapp No truth to it . . . Nancy Benoit was Kevin's ex-wife (she was "Woman" and "Fallen Angel") and the marriage fell apart when Kevin booked a match where if Benoit won, he would win her services for a month. While she was with Benoit, they became involved. Nancy Grace also tried to tie Sherri Martel's death to Sullivan as well, but as far as I know, that was all the product of some overactive imaginations (that and Nancy Grace is stark raving nuts).
@Deanpapp None what so ever. It's usually thrown out there by people who want try excuse what Benoit did. I loved the Benoit we got to see in the ring but you can't excuse what he did.
When Cactus Jack is the least crazy of any trio, then something is wrong.
By the way, someone can tell me what Sullivan said that was censored ?
This is the 1st time I ever see Kevin Sullivan being quick. I 1st saw him during his feud with Hogan, and I always called him the worst wrestler ever, but boy is he intense in that match and promo !
Buzz Sawyer was a legit tough guy...Read the road stories...He got in a bar fight and a guy stuck a pistol in Sawyers mouth and Sawyer started laughing...The guy relaxed, Sawyer took the pistol away and almost killed the guy...Ivan Koloff traveled with him on the road too..He said Buzz was an ass kicker supreme...He was the Florida High School athlete of the year back in 1976...5'9'' and 250 and was a wrestling machine..
And I thought I seen it all. No offense to yall who like em, but they got no respect for wrestling. Tho I must admit Sullivan can cut a damn good promo. Loco still, but just a little ahead of its time, don't ya think?
Buzz was lucky to have found a job that he could do and make a living. His best years were in the early 80's and even then he needed someone to help him with promos. I am not saying he wasnt a great worker, in the early days, he was one of the promising up and comers. But he never reached his pinnacle, ridiculous promos and at best a a solid mid carder.
Buzz Sawyer was a sick #uck. I'd hate have been a jobber to him. He friggin stiff hurt people and the hits in THIS match was average to the meatballs he f'd up in Georgia squash matches in the 80's. I think he died fairly shortly after this final run in WCW.
How much potential did Sullivan, Buzz Sawyer & Cactus Jack have as an out of control group of maniacs? Buzz Sawyer was also notorious for taking money to "train" wrestlers. The training consisted of Buzz Sawyer kicking the shit out of them & torturing them into quitting on day one. No refunds, if they asked he kicked their ass more. Most famou person this happened to was Undertaker. Undertaker talked shit for years, but then was in WCW with Sawyer...& didnt have it in him to do much about it!
@CrypticSlaughter666 read Gary Michael Cappetta's (WCW ring announcers) book and you will find Undertaker said a lot and more to Sawyer when they were both in WCW.
Sawyer was probably drugged out. He was well known to take advantage of his opponent in the ring and hurt a lot of guys. Good thing for him it was a prelim guy. Had it been legit guy like a Kurt Angle or someone, it would have been a far different story
we need more of the crazy gimmicks.buzz kicked ass and he did great acting as far as carrying out his character.sullivan drew most of the heat but buzz made it believable.he looked crazy and could go nuts, you just wanted to stay away from him.jobbers have it made today.they know they wont get hurt but back then damn buzz might bite ya
FOLEY WAS SOAKING THIS ALL UP! HE WAS THINKING, "THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO DO BUT MORE VIOLENT AND SADISTIC!" THE KING OF HARDCORE, MICK FOLEY, SULLIVAN AND BUZZ IS A SCARY SITE FOR ANYONE IN PRO WRESTLING.
Wow I so remember this angle. They should have been called the Fireplugs from Hell. They both look like firehydrants. And would beat you to death while you were thinking of it. Great
I love JR and Cornette on the mike. Cornette screaming "Oh my God, Cactus Jack is dead!!!" after he took the Nestea splash from Mil Mascaras is still the greatest call ever.
i miss when they would match up with no namers lol thats how they effectively built up the major matches... now everyone only wrestles other stars a thousand times...
those splashes off the top were just as good as the ones snuka does.dumbasses were picking them both up off the ground and dropping them,i bet idol appreciated that.it was a great interview, sullivan shoving him down hitting him saying it's me it's me.foley was right out there in left field somewhere.notice his look during the interview.mad dog, well, like it says mad dog
Ho hum! Another mismatch from the 1980s where two well experienced ring veterans like Kevin Sullivan and the late Mad Dog Buzz Sawyer take on two jobbers. No competition in this one. As always, the jobbers were paid to lose.
Just terrible. Sullivan and Sawyer get 6 minutes of uninterupted offense and that's the best move set they've got?
When a notoriously terrible booker threatens two no-names not to perform, then Sawyer no-sells, I don't know that this counts as "ring psychology." It's just a desperate booker trying to remain relevant and looking pitiful in the attempt.
Fan-friggin-tastic. Great match and EVEN BETTER PROMO! This clip gets everything done...Sullivan and Sawyer get over like absolute lunatics, the crowd goes ape-shit, the announcers sell the rest of the show, and Ross and Cornette even sell the house show line-up for the rest of the week.
THAT'S how you do wrestling. Shows you how great WCW was back in the TBS days. I miss this.
This is hands down, one of the best segments I have ever seen! Sawyer was bein the mad dog in the ring, and it set up the awesome promo from sullivan. Mick and JR can only smirk, cuz they knew that wasn't jus promo gold, hell that was platinum! The match made the interview great
Sawyer would have been a huge draw to wrestling if he were still alive. He was already a huge draw...but he would've been very well known world wide if he were alive today. What a great talent!
@JIMMYLINE Absolutely. he gave it 100% everytime the cameras were rolling. What I've heard and read he had a pretty hard time with drugs and couldn't turn off the Maddog even when he wasn't in the ring. Like brawling with cops and stuff!
@dannyfordisgod: At least he never wanted to run an angle involving BURNING DOWN AN ARENA the way Vince Russo wanted to in WCW. Hell, even Russo borders on sane and human compared to those scumbags Rob Black from XPW or Zandig from CZW, which is basically XPW without the porn.
real talk... i don't think Buzz Sawyer gets alot of credit for ring pschology. Him and Sullivan were a perfect fit and it's just a shame he got cut his time here.
@ZeusDaGOD I don't think i saw this cuz i would have remembered it, must be '89-,90, '88 earliest, it was still NWA but it was WCW from NWA, I'm pretty sure i have recorded, I'm gonna find it today, they were tagging up, he didn't get cut -- he did a jump just like that off the top rope, won the match, but you can see when Buzz lands, he breaks his arm, must've been soon after, I thought he was hurt, and Joel Goodhart announced it on his show, and that was it.
@ZeusDaGOD I totally agree. "Mad Dog" was one of the TOUGHEST in the ring. He could wrestle you or just beat you up. WIch of course he did most times.
@ZeusDaGOD He was absolutely perfect. He was always a nutcase but then when he started the laughing it was scary. He was ALWAYS a heel too,no flip/flopping.
it is crazy beacuse of the charchters sawyer and sullivan where like nut cases in there charchters lol that was a good tag team because of there personialties not to mention mick foley with these too!!!!!
@RPenta: Blah, blah, blah. Katie Vick, HHH's racist feud with Booker T., the Almighty DX dumping shit on people's heads, Naked Mideon and the Diva Searches weren't PG either, and they SUCKED.
In my opinion, the only impressive thing about Zan Panzer is his mask. Also, how do you get a name like Robbie IDOL? In my opinion, sounds more like a "teen heartthrob" than a wrestler.
I followed wrestling for many years and after a while, it was easy to get bored of it because most of the time it is somewhat predictable. But I must admit, the aftermath of this match was totally awesome! Who would expect the jobbers to win? And who would expect a promo like that to go down?
There was a guy named Zamphir who played the panflute; he had a record which was advertised on TBS on WCW programming. You could call an 800 number to order it. I would always think, "Who would possibly buy this junk??!?!?" And Cornette must have thought the same thing, because I remember one night he kept mocking Zan Panzer by calling him "Zamphir Panflute!"
No one's gonna remember this, but it was classic Cornette, in my book!
It even semed like Sullivan was trying to keep from laughing! Great Match, Great interview. Hearing Cornette call Zan Panzer, Zamfir Panflute again was amazing!!!! This made my morning. Thank you!
too much crank, bro. WAY too much crank. but other than that, when was the last time you saw a heel just mug his opponent so bad they get DQ'd?? it's the ultimate heat.
Teach me how to oogie.

real talk... i don't think Buzz Sawyer gets alot of credit for ring pschology. Him and Sullivan were a perfect fit and it's just a shame he got cut his time here.
ZeusDaGOD 2 years ago 18
@ZeusDaGOD I don't think i saw this cuz i would have remembered it, must be '89-,90, '88 earliest, it was still NWA but it was WCW from NWA, I'm pretty sure i have recorded, I'm gonna find it today, they were tagging up, he didn't get cut -- he did a jump just like that off the top rope, won the match, but you can see when Buzz lands, he breaks his arm, must've been soon after, I thought he was hurt, and Joel Goodhart announced it on his show, and that was it.
This is great, peace.
bobethe 2 years ago
@ZeusDaGOD I totally agree. "Mad Dog" was one of the TOUGHEST in the ring. He could wrestle you or just beat you up. WIch of course he did most times.
CadillacL 1 year ago 3
@ZeusDaGOD He was absolutely perfect. He was always a nutcase but then when he started the laughing it was scary. He was ALWAYS a heel too,no flip/flopping.

Kevin Sullivan was one of a kind; it is scary to think that he helped bring Luna Vachon into the wrestling business in Florida.
I don't think this is PG; just FYI Vince.
RPenta 2 years ago 2
And he was Raven's hero along with Jake Roberts.
RSXemperor 2 years ago
@RPenta: Blah, blah, blah. Katie Vick, HHH's racist feud with Booker T., the Almighty DX dumping shit on people's heads, Naked Mideon and the Diva Searches weren't PG either, and they SUCKED.

Buzz Sawyer was only two years from his death in this video. Drug overdose. Surprised???
JOELW999 2 years ago
In my opinion, the only impressive thing about Zan Panzer is his mask. Also, how do you get a name like Robbie IDOL? In my opinion, sounds more like a "teen heartthrob" than a wrestler.

Too bad I stopped watching wrestling between 88 and 95. I missed a few good moments like this one.
darkstar4589 2 years ago
I followed wrestling for many years and after a while, it was easy to get bored of it because most of the time it is somewhat predictable. But I must admit, the aftermath of this match was totally awesome! Who would expect the jobbers to win? And who would expect a promo like that to go down?
JDdiablo30 2 years ago
THIS PROMO IS FUCKING AMAZING

Zan Panzer!!! Classic jobber to the stars!
No one's gonna remember this, but it was classic Cornette, in my book!

the She-Wolf came!! look the fuck out!
