This isn't a bad climb at all, IMO. Swiss operate the A340-313X, which (I think) has more powerful CFM engines then the one's on the original. A340-300
Yes..very slow climb! I agree with "jetfreak" 100%. 4 engine aircraft have reduced thrust to compensate for the extra 2 engines. The cruise spd however, is faster. I fly the best twin ever.
Especially with the GE's running on full power, the takeoff roll is pretty short and a avg climb rate of 3,000-4,000 FPM which is reasonable. Unlike the old C150's I trained in that can reach 500FPM if your lucky
I had an opportunity to fly on Finnair's and Swiss' A343. Plane is in my opinion really underpowered. On long flights these birds can't go instantly FL310 or higher. I was on several intercontinental flights and my general impression is that Airbuses are less "able" when it comes to come to penetrate turbulences zones.
However comparing Airbuses to Boeings they are more quiet. But I still love Boeing powerful 752, 772, 773 and 744.
A340's aren't really underpowered (747-100's were though.. read up on thrust-weight ratios for them). They have more than enough thrust to lift into the sky, and can lose an engine and still fly perfectly normal. I love Boeing too, for the exact same reasons as you! xD
I agree, the initial climb is slow but this airplane has enough thrust to fly in cruise with one engine inoperative and to continue to fly with 2 engines. The 4 engines are less powerful to burn less fuel to compensate the highest maintenance costs due to the 2 additional engines.
The Airbus A330 has very powerful engines. In my opinion the A330-200 with Rolls Royce engines is as powerful as the 777.
Quadra-jets typically perform in the following ways....long take off rolls and slow climbs. This is because a quadra-jet generally has a lower thrust to weight ratio than that of a twin jet because of the extra two engines. They also have more drag for this same reason. However, quadra-jets typically have higher cruise speeds and are free of ETOPS requirements. Because of the extra drag, the takeoff is likely longer...an A340 also needs to be going 180 mph to go airborne, higher than most twins.
Great enough in comparison to what? The aircraft wouldn't be going anywhere if it was so severely underpowered . Yes it has sufficient power for it's necessary performance requirements and nothing else but that by no means makes it underpowered.
The plane turn low :)

B777-200ER. GE90 engines...phenomenal aircraft/engines.

You are right but please consider that only a dozen of 747-100 have been produced and A343 is most popular version of this plane.
123miste 2 years ago
... and 747-100 was designed as airliner for shorter routes. So MTOW and MLW are less impressive than for 747-400. Thus engines could be weaker.
Best regards

Just a correction, more powerful with Pratt & Whitney engines, my apologize.

It's not 'underpowered', it's power is sufficient, it just is not 'overpowered' in the sense a twin-holer is.
