Pridgen is a great drummer (for those of you detracting his work, I'll point you to his most obvious jazz and rock influences, Buddy Rich, Ginger Baker, and John Bonham) but he's not as good a fit for The Mars Volta as Jon Theodore was. Just my opinion.

@halabinono If you want the hi hat closer to the snare you will have to put the slave pedal on the outside (left) of the hihat. Some people can do that and be okay with the linkage crossing over the footboard of the hh. Those that do not like that either get used to the hh being further away or they get a DW5520 hihat.

@halabinono i actually found a way around this that was ALOT easier than the discription the other guy gave you, what you want to do is if you have a rotating leg hi hat stand, just rotate the legs so one of them will be right beside the left side of the hh pedal, then you can just slide it right beside the slave pedal, and then just move the two pedals as close as you need to the snare stand, its alot more comfortable than having the drive link go over your pedal.

@halabinono Dude, depending on the stand (e.g, on my tama roadpro) you can loosen the legs with a drum key and move them around the stand, so there is more space for the pedal to fit in. Im not sure if thats possible on other stands but on most ive seen it possible.

I use the heel of my left foot on the high hat which leaves your foot still on the left pedal of the double kick. Also allows you to lean on the Kick Drum to change the tone if you want while using the high hat. May not be for everyone, but since I did not start drumming till I was 53, I was looking for short cuts...

@Zlashrogue I don't mean to come off as condescending but if you knew anything about Pridgen and his drumming background you would know that he is originally a gospel drummer and is amazing at keeping a beat and has more feeling then most drummers. However this video is from his later years around the time he played for The Mars Volta.. TMV is a great band, but is known for being rhythmically complex, hence the odd time signatures and crazy fills in this video.
