Personally I think we should have a national day but I don't see why it has to be st Georges day. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if people just wanted St George's day to be a holiday just so they get another day off. Some of the proposed "celebrations" are simply false and shallow attempts to feel good about your nationality, like ceremonian moriss dancing. St David's Day in Wales isn't a holiday but it's still celebrated in both traditional and social (i.e, getting pissed) fashions. St George's day should just be that, and people shouldnt need a day off to be proud of who they are.

I was born in the UK by accident. If I'd have been born 1000 years ago I'd be expected to be proud of being Mercian.

We are citizens of the world. Where you are born is incidental. Only weak countries insecure in their collective identity need such a day of celebration. Perhaps England or the UK would count. I would prefer a bank holiday that an individual can elect to take when they want with out employers saying it's a busy period we expect you to work. Like we don't have lives.

St George was half Roman half Palestinian, not russian. He is also the patron saint of Russia and Palestine. Personally I think we should have a national day but I don't see why it has to be st Georges day. I don't revere saints so why should I celebrate a religious festival as my day of national pride? maybe when a party with balls gets in and reforms the polictical system so that is fair and equal we can have a constitution day. Until then I'll just have to celebrate all year round :)

St. Patrick's Day is only a bank holiday in Northern Ireland, not the UK entirely. The last thing this country needs at the moment is another bank holiday. Those who push for one are not doing so for patriotism, they're doing it because they want an extra day to laze about.
At least St. Patrick had something to do with Ireland, unlike St. George, a Turk notorious for killing a creature that never existed. What on earth has he got to do with England or Englishness for that matter?
