There are a lot of bad students that has alot to do with no job! Two people from the same school one gets a job right and the other?
@beda402 Watch the PBS Frontline documentary "College, Inc" & find out for yourself. Or, if you have money & time to waste, go enroll in a for-profit "college" like DeVry, Westwood, U of Phoenix, etc & find out.
I agree completely with typhoidX. Don't jeopardize your financial future with a crappy education from DeVry.
I'm already trying my best to get the heck out of said school. It's not challenging, and financially you could do much better by going to a college like purdue, the art institute, and etc.
@LinkintheCVGPark Well, to be fair, the Art Institute is also a for-profit w/ its own share of questionable behavior... to say the least...
In today's market, regardless of whether a for-profit provides quality education, the stigma of a for-profit alone is incentive enough for a rational consumer to consider these so-called "colleges" as a "choice" of last resort/desperation.
DeVry Inc. (The University's parent company) had a 2010 profit margin of 35%. This means that 35 cents of every dollar used by student used to go to DeVry went to an investor instead of their educational experience. Technically, DeVry could offer the same education at 34% less and still stay in business, but they are greedy and will raise tuition to as much as the government is willing to give a student. Tuition could be $400/credit hour but it is $595. Interesting stat.
No, every college out there isn't for profit. Not for profit schools (University of Illinois, Bradley, Northwestern etc) use each cent of tuition and fee cost to paqy back into the institution. For example, if A "For profit" school raises tuition, it is because they are trying to raise a stock price and give tuition money straight to investors. If a non-profit raises tuition, it is often to build a new student building or add on other programs. .
They are accredited, stop bein noobs and look it up, they have alum sitting in the US Supreme Court Administrative Offices, and a dozen or so with NASA... yea real bad college.

@wolfizwatchin you're an idiot. have you even taken a look at devry's catalog lately? Are you seriously that stupid? They're not challenging their students, and they're not challenging them properly. @LinkintheCVGPark "how many times have I heard how the US Supreme court sucks? Ohhh a billion! get your facts right." so I don't have MY facts straight, oooookay, then here's some facts for ya...
35% of people who attempt Devry graduate (because its no cakewalk) FACT ... 90% of them are employed within 6 months... FACT

To the comment on raising tuition... it's a game man; when the government raises pell grants, like clockwork ALL universities raise their tuition. To the comment on Purdue and Art Institute, yea tell that to the 90% of people who live no where near these public schools- haha
for the record here... the majority of US Soldiers enrolled in college is a for-profit institution (online), so if their degree is worthless... then they are essentially...correct?!
wow... I am truly amazed at how many kids get on here and dramatize their personal experiences when in all actuality, they probably got a loan, blew it on video games, pot, or something unrelated to their education... and they never studied so they flunked out... that sounds about right!
Okay. I have a question. I'm pursuing my bachelors degree at DeVry for Business, but my passion is writing and filmmaking. Should I continue attending Devry if I have a passion for writing and filmmaking? Does it make sense to keep pursuing a degree from DeVry when my passions lie elsewhere?
@redbirdwarrior YES, I would lump DeVry together with the other "universities" you mentioned. Back when I didn't know better, I took a few online classes from them. When I first contacted the "admissions" people, they used just about every sales tactic described in that film on me. They also tried to double bill me. Looking back on it, I'm glad they tried to do that, for that convinced me to dump them & cut my losses.
@typhoidX Yeah. I found an art institute nearby, so I'm trying for that. I'm thinking only my gen. ed classes will transfer over.. and some web design...
For those who are considering DeVry "university", please take a look at the recent PBS Frontline documentary "College, Inc" before jeopardizing your financial future with a "degree" from a "college" such as DeVry.
@1991Avega So transfer to a real university (IF you haven't finished your degree). As ridiculous as this sounds, there are real schools who take transfer credits from for-profits like DeVry.
@intuit13 No, its not mentioned. I lump DeVry in w/ the rest of the for-profits is because they used most of the same tactics mentioned in that documentary on me when I took online classes w/ them, and they probably tried to defraud me & the US Army by double billing me even though military Tuition Assistance already paid the bill. Also, if u look them up on "ripoff report" (just google the site then search for 'DeVry') you'll see similar patterns of misconduct &/or administrative incompetence.
@typhoidX DeVry is a "University" and it is accredited by same school board that accredits the University of Michigan. That board is also backed by the Department of Education.
@TheCbevans You'd be sadly mistaken if you think comparable accreditation = comparable quality of education. Besides, my complaint has nothing to do w/ accreditation or lack thereof. My problem w/ DeVry is that they tried to scam me & scam the US Army by double billing me for tuition already paid for under military tuition assistance. I could give a rat's ass what kind of accreditation they have. I just don't want other veterans to encounter the same situation.
@typhoidX Accounting mistakes happen, I had an incident where they overcharged me too. I simply picked up the phone and talked to the Student Finance and got it cleared. I'm a U.S. Marine, a Sergeant, five years active duty, and now enjoying my life as a civilian here in Florida. Thank you for your service. I honestly don't believe they purposefully tried to scam you. I have referred a few of my Marines to DeVry and they are all getting close to graduating too.
@TheCbevans Perhaps its "entirely coincidental" that when I pursued the double-charge, DeVry stonewalled & ignored me for 9 months, passing me off from one corporate bureaucrat to another, until I threatened legal action for their negligence/fraud. I'm sure THAT is just an "accounting mistake". I'm glad they didn't F you over, but my 2 cents is that if anyone, veteran or not, wants to attend college, a for-profit "college" like DeVry should be a measure of absolute last resort.
@TheCbevans school accreditation is different from course accreditation. most for-profit focus on obtaining regional school accreditation which unlocks federal financial aid and loan money. They don't care much about having their courses accredited though, which leaves students in a bad spot, because Course accreditation is what gives your degree weight. Without it all you have is a piece of paper, a paper that employer will reject.
@vcdna1 Regional accreditation does not "unlock" Federal Financial Aid. There is also "National Accreditation" and schools do not have to be accredited to get Federal Funds. They can be in the process of getting accreditation. As for programmatic accrediation. what about TAC of ABET, or PMI . or CAHIIM programatic accreditation. Did you know any of that? or that their regional accreditation is the same as that of Michigan or Ohio or Miami.
@markm1105 You are wrong, they do need to be accredited to qualify for federal student aid, and loan program. National and Regional accreditation deals with schools not course work. Please learn more about this subject before you post again.
@typhoidX I think you love DeVry and don't know how to express it... You keep watching their videos and posting in all of them; that demonstrates you care about it because if you would not care you would not waste all your time watching their videos and commenting about them...
@mois231 Why yes, that's exactly why I want to tell everyone how DeVry tried to scam me... so that more people can be screwed over by for-profit "colleges" such as DeVry. In fact, by that logic, every time a consumer complains about a shitty product, they're actually expressing "love" for it. The "obvious solution" for pissed off consumers is to simply stay silent & let others be fooled in the same way. What an impeccable line of reasoning...
I suspect the negative remarks come from Art History majors who believed that was gonna work for them. After I graduated from Devry in 2002, I went on to join a Big 4 consulting firm and was an advisor to USAID in a conflict country (I'm a woman) and then went on to manage MBAs at the major movie studios in Hollywood. If you don't have first hand experience with Devry, stop parroting your friend's second hand opinions.
Which big 4 firm? Believe it or not I just had a nice conversation with my school's KPMG recruiter and we talked about the for profit college model and joked about how no one really takes those degrees seriously. During my KPMG internship last summer we even joked about starting our own school taking it public and sticking the morons that enrolled with non dischargeable student loans and a worthless degree.
@Rockynurse Wonderful. Like I said in my other post, I've moved on with my life because business is not for me period. I am too independent and creative for it. Enjoy the corporate world though buddy. You will be a big corporate star with your degree. Maybe a supply chain management analyst. Name in lights and all that jazz. LOL.
@Rockynurse Also, I suspect you didn't get that job. :-) One thing that firms do is test your temperament in terms of diversity by fielding conversations like that. Consulting firms are ALL about bringing in diversity and you deal with the topic alot. You have to be open to all kinds, especially when working on large teams where people are from all walks. They test out prejudices on people with those "sidebar" conversations. You got duped. Indoctrination backfires.
@Rockynurse Also, be aware that your actions in that meeting advocated employment discrimination which is illegal. I would never hire someone who was so open as to "agree" with me that discriminating against someone on the basis of the school they went to was right. I would look at that conversation and know that you would spell legal trouble down the road. At Devry, they taught us interview etiquette. I'm sorry your school didn't help you there.
It isn't illegal to not hire someone based on their lack of proper academic achievement. Diversity is great but top accounting firms only want diversity from desirable schools and Devry isnt a school it is a for profit corporation like McDonalds or Walmart.
Devry is underrepresented in high paying jobs and overrepresented in student loan defaults and low GMAT scores. I can have any job in just about any firm I want I have received offers from everywhere I applied to.
@misdelivery I am a fuckin cpa candidate LOL Ass umptions. 1. Devry is underrepresented in high paying jobs, 2 overrepresented in student loan defaults 3 employers sometimes specifically say "devry need not apply", 4 devry is a corporation like mcdonalds, 5 devry has not SAT requirement gpa requirement 6. devry is not AACSB accredited 7. congress is currently investigating and legislating against This isn't a college it is a joke!!!! Face the facts you are wrong I am right end of story!
@Rockynurse You will learn as you move through life that people stop projecting their own insecurities about their jobs and performance onto other people around the age of 30. I hope you mature along with the rest of us. Peace.
Devry enrolls anyone with money. They have no admissions standards no SAT requirement no respect.
How the hell did you even end up at a big 4 consulting firm? They don't even recruit at devry. Most the HR managers I know at big 4 firms have an automatic rejection function on their computers to get rid of fucking devry and phoenix degrees!
Devry can help you start a new beginning in education and if you use your time wisely and all the great benefits they offer to you, then you can only gain from attending. I like my school and don't think it's fair to state negative information about it if it's based off your personal experience. If you don't have anything nice to say - do not say it at all?
THE REAL DEVRY> About my personal DeVry experience> They didn't even have enough working computers for all the students. Financial problems at the time from what our deans told us & asked us to take another course for the semester. I left just in time to get a reliable education at a state college & now have a dependable job & my Master's I earned not just a paid for degree from a for profit institute. My straight A credits weren't even accepted by the college because of DeVry's reputation.
DeVry is a joke. The admissions person I had spent more time reading her script than knowing what really goes on at DeVry. Couldn't answer any of my questions. I felt like I was being interviewed by a high school drop out desperate for a paycheck. Glad I went to a real univ. where the educatio gave me a head start to a dependable career. Not like the one DeVry was offering. Most students have one chance to get their degree So Please get one where it will be meaningful.. Not at DeVry!
@desertflower08 it must've been a wonderful university that you ended up going to considering you didn't even mention the name of the university. By the way i'm glad you're enjoying your educatio. yes, stupid re-read your post and you'll find that you misspelled education. P.S. i'm looking forward to attending DeVry this July.
@mlucasone I'd love to see actual evidence of this. What kc243243 was saying is that its lousy because the degree is from devry. Have fun with your devry experience.
@kc243243 Lousy degree? Last time i check a bachelor's degree is still a bachelor's degree regardless on if it's from Tenessee state or Yale. The point is it's still a bachelor's degree. besides in my field of study 98% of the students who graduate get employment within six months of graduating and earn a minimum starting salary of 47K per year.
@Charchar425 - If you can't get a job with it, it's a lousy degree. DeVry? If I see a resume with DeVry mentioned on it, it automatically gets tossed.
@Charchar425 Holy shit you're a moron. So you're basically saying a Bachelor's from Harvard=Bachelor's from DeVry? I don't expect much from DeVry students but damn. Anyways, good luck paying off your loans when you can't find a job because no employer will take your degree seriously.
@YukiNagato3 If there are actual DeVry students out there who genuinely think their DeVry "degree" is the equivalent of, or even remotely comparable to that of an Ivy League institution, then that fact alone tells you about the intellectual and inquisitive capacity (or rather the lack thereof) of the DeVry student body. Such a belief, if it exists, would be the best advertisement against enrollment in DeVry or any other for-profit "college".
My major of study is the arts such as web design, animation and game design. I’m in this field because it will make my pockets fat, and I like these fields im in. But I wonder how is the tutoring at Devry?
My last college school was terrible with their tutoring recourses. I can’t believe I stayed up there for two years and still no degree. I’m mad as hell and this was Kennedy King College a two year school and they failed my dreams about graduating on time.
@desertflower08 I have had no problems at my devry campus and everybody is more than helpful. My classes have been very challenging and thorough with well qualified teachers. Devry has proven to provide a high quality education at my campus. I'm sorry you are not reaching your education goals. Hope you find a school that satisfies you.
@mlucasone I attended Florida State for a year, not once did I get a phone call from my guidance counselor, or from an academic adviser as to which classes I should take or even how my classes were going. State colleges care about: money and their sports programs. Not one of my classes had less than 30 people in it and some as many as 300. I'll stick to my >20 students in my class. I have 2 classes left and I graduate in December. Just like you mlucasone I've let nothing stand in my way.
They ripped me for about 4.5K for being enrolled 1 week in an online class then withdrawing. Stupidest mistake i've ever made in my life because I listened to an idiot that recommended them. Terrible decision, I don't know what I was thinking. They sold me hard, I should have known better. If you get financial aid, they just pay themselves with dept. of education money to lock you into debt with the dept. of education that you cannot erase. It's true crime.

How the hell did you even end up at a big 4 consulting firm? They don't even recruit at devry. Most the HR managers I know at big 4 firms have an automatic rejection function on their computers to get rid of fucking devry and phoenix degrees!

Devry gives a good education, but it is over priced. Start with community college until you get an associates degree before stepping foot in devry.

@desertflower08 dude none of my credits transferred, but getting out of devry was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

@Contrarocker Congratulations on your descision.

@desertflower08 That seems to be a trend with all these private colleges.

Not at DeVry!
desertflower08 2 years ago
@desertflower08 it must've been a wonderful university that you ended up going to considering you didn't even mention the name of the university. By the way i'm glad you're enjoying your educatio. yes, stupid re-read your post and you'll find that you misspelled education. P.S. i'm looking forward to attending DeVry this July.

@Charchar425 good luck finding a job with a lousy degree..
kc243243 1 year ago
@kc243243 A bachelor's degree is not a "lousy degree". Many fortune 500 companies go to Devry for well trained employees.
mlucasone 1 year ago
@mlucasone I'd love to see actual evidence of this. What kc243243 was saying is that its lousy because the degree is from devry. Have fun with your devry experience.
Contrarocker 1 year ago
@kc243243 Lousy degree? Last time i check a bachelor's degree is still a bachelor's degree regardless on if it's from Tenessee state or Yale. The point is it's still a bachelor's degree. besides in my field of study 98% of the students who graduate get employment within six months of graduating and earn a minimum starting salary of 47K per year.
Charchar425 1 year ago
@Charchar425 - If you can't get a job with it, it's a lousy degree. DeVry? If I see a resume with DeVry mentioned on it, it automatically gets tossed.
wereldboom 11 months ago
@Charchar425 Holy shit you're a moron. So you're basically saying a Bachelor's from Harvard=Bachelor's from DeVry? I don't expect much from DeVry students but damn. Anyways, good luck paying off your loans when you can't find a job because no employer will take your degree seriously.
YukiNagato3 10 months ago
