You own the Rickets #72 chassis? Wow that's incredible. Does it still have this same colour scheme? I must admit I think all the F3 chassis from this era - particularly the '89 Reynard chassis - look beautiful. Low nose close to the ground. Very racey.
Its chassis number 006. Its not in that colour now. But under a few layers of paint (before the respray) we did find the blue/white/yellow of that colour scheme.
That's right. He also had a Toyota powered machine which wasn't as good as the Mugen and VW powerplants of the same year. A Reynard-Toyota one won ONE race that season and that was the season opener from driver Rickard Rydell.
Some trivia: This race was gonna be Hakkinen's first vicory in British F3. However a few laps prior to this accident he spun on dirt left on the track by another car whilst leading. Hakkinen was in about 5th position when his crash happened and it was because the backmarker in the blue and white car spun in front of him. This crash is Hakkinen's avoidance of the backmarker. It stopped the race and Paul Stewart (Jackie's son) took him maiden F3 win as a result!
Whats more if I remember rightly, Stewart actually won the race after crossing the line backwards (he had a spin on the final corner). Because the race was stopped from that lap he won... very lucky for him!
Definitely not a McLaren junior team. If the driver or team is backed by Marlboro then they'd use this sponsorship scheme of day-glo red/white. Dragon motorsport had it for this season and also in their previous season in FF2000. In this same year, '89, Allan McNish was in a different team, WSR, that was also Marlboro backed and used the same Marlboro colour scheme as Hakkinen/Dragon.
Was that a McLaren junior team? Colour scheme looks way like it. I thought that cos they always did that in F3000, but then you told me it was F3, so not so sure now. Please enlighten me..
@svcxac And I lived near his lodgings in Great Bedwyn. I also used to work at the Garage opposite, and Cesar was there too, Great times. How does one contact Mika these days, without getting snarled up in a PR Firm?
And off, off, off goes Mika Hakkinen

Also I presume this #72 Rickets car raced in Class A in the 1988 season, do you know which driver drove it then?

In 1988 it was Rafael Real Del Sartes car.

Häkkinen skipped F3000 on his way to F1, he came to Lotus directly from Formula 3.

So it's just that the team is backed by Marlboro.

This is a British Formula 3 crash, not Formula 3000. It was in 1989 when Hakkinen was racing for Dragon Motorsport.
